Fashion month has now come and gone and left a glamorous wake behind it just waiting for starlets to snatch up and rock on the red carpet. Looks from YSL, Rodarte, Altuzarra, Gucci, DSquared2, Brandon Maxwell, Adam Selman, Monse, Jason Wu and more’s Spring 2017 RTW collections have already been flying off the runway onto the backs of some of the most glam ladies in fashion and Hollywood including Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, Jamie King, Gigi Hadid, and Karlie Kloss. I am really excited to see who will bring some of my favorite looks alive on the red carpet.
Since I was unable to review all the shows that I truly loved due to my current crazy work schedule I tasked myself with coming up with a list that comprehensively showcased all the best looks from over New York, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks. Some looks I couldn’t wait to feature in a wish list already, and others it was hard to decide on just one look from the collection to feature. This list just in alphabetical order, showing no favoritism to one look over the other (even though there are definitely some looks that I HAVE to see hit the red carpet.)
Alberta Ferretti: Alberta Ferretti took us on a glam version of a safari. This is one of those looks that I couldn’t wait to feature in a wish list. This look is absolutely fantastic. From the rich purple tiered silk peasant style ball skirt to the strapless embroidered leather crop top this is a look that not many could pull off (Bella Hadid did so with great aplomb on the runway) but I think that Lupita Nyong’o would really turn this look out on a red carpet. The dramatic nature of this look would make it perfect for a film festival or for one of the more edgy awards shows like the Hollywood Film Awards.
Alexander McQueen: McQueen is usually one of my favorite shows of fashion month and Sarah Burton didn’t disappoint. I am sure that we will see several of the looks from this collection on the red carpet but this black and silver gown which features an embroidered ship being overtaken by a wave of silver sequins and a feathered hem is the look that I am most hoping to see hit a red carpet. This really isn’t a look that we will see on the red carpet at a film festival or any awards show, but I think for an awards show after party or a music awards red carpet. This is a very dramatic look and I think that this is one of those moments where Nicole Kidman would shine on the red carpet at like the Grammy Awards.
Balenciaga: Balenciaga has not really been on my radar since Demma Gvasalia has taken over the label as creative director. We have not really seen any Balenciaga looks on the red carpet. Looking at this collection with its bold colors and draped silk jersey fabrics will be all over some of the red carpet on the backs of some of the people who have been loyal to the house. My favorite red carpet ready look from the Balenciaga Spring 2017 RTW collection was this this gorgeous pool blue draped silk jersey mini dress which features a dainty broach detail on one hip. I think that the effortless edgy glamour of Diane Kruger would really bring this dress to life on a red carpet.
Brandon Maxwell: In his third collection (shown in an intimate presentation at the Russian Tea Room in New York City to an audience that included Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, and Jourdan Dunn) Brandon added army green and very soft pink to his signature black, white and ivory. While each look from this collection deserves a red carpet moment (with Karlie Kloss, Kerry Washington, and Naomi Campbell already wearing the collection on the red carpet) I was immediately drawn to this gorgeous black structured gown which I would absolutely die if Lady Gaga slayed on the red carpet. She would go full glam with a chic up-do, red lip, dazzling diamond drop earrings and really turn this into an absolutely major moment.
Elie Saab: The past few seasons I have not been loving the red carpet kings ready to wear collections. Elie Saab has been trying to skew his woman to a younger demographic and it was not coming across well. This season was the first time that I was really saw the new look really work. There were a couple of looks from this collection that I would love to see on the red carpet but this blue and black beaded fringe embellished gown wins the ticket for being the look that I would most like to see hit the red carpet. I think that Elizabeth Banks would be the perfect person to wear this gown, maybe for the inaugural balls in January?
Emanuel Ungaro: I have to say that I was really surprised by how much of the Emanuel Ungaro Spring 2017 RTW collection I actually enjoyed. I have liked bits and pieces of the collections here and there but there were a lot of looks from this collection that I really want to see on the red carpet. The piece that I most want to see be brought to life on a red carpet is this aqua blue halter dress which features dramatic ruffles. It is going to take one fierce woman to really make this dress come alive. I would love to see someone like Jennifer Lopez or Blake Lively wear this. They both have looks that would really make this turn into a major moment for some sort of cocktail event.
Erdem: If someone asked me what were my favorite overall collections of Spring 2017 RTW the Erdem collection would most definitely be on that list. He reinvents the wheel each season sending out gorgeous floral prints (that are the staple of the label), that don’t usually seem very redundant. We see a lot of floral pencil dresses on the red carpet but I think that this one that would totally stand out. On the back of Charlize Theron this would become a Best Dressed of the Month and maybe the year look.
Gucci: Much like Erdem the Gucci Spring 2017 Collection was among my overall favorite collections of this season. Gucci has been dominating the red carpet this year and I don’t see that slowing down any time soon. There were several looks from this collection that I am sure that we are going to see it on the red carpet. I have already featured looks from this collection, and while it was really difficult to pick a look I did the difficult task. This dusty cornflower blue tiered tulle gown which features dazzling golden sequin embellishment is probably the most likely gown to dazzle the red carpet. There are several Gucci loyalists that I could see wearing this gown on the red carpet but Kirsten Dunst and Sienna Miller were the first two that came to mind and they would more than dazzle in it.
Jason Wu: I have loved Jason Wu since he first debuted at New York Fashion Week, before he became a favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama and a red carpet phenomenon. Now we see his designs on all different red carpets and on the backs of some of the chicest women in the world. His very feminine take on the 60’s modernist movement for Spring 2017 RTW was amazing. Diane Kruger has already given this collection its first red carpet moment. I was really taken with the gorgeous neon 3-D floral embroidered gowns that Wu showcased. They will for sure be snatched up by some of the chic ladies of young Hollywood. I would most like to see this strapless high low a-line gown on the back of the queen teen Kiernan Shipka on the red carpet, I hope that she gets a project that would allow for this gown to have the moment that it deserves.
Louis Vuitton: If at the beginning of fashion month you had told me that Louis Vuitton would be on my list of favorite collections I probably would have laughed at you, but alas we are here with a look from the collection on this list. I had written off Vuitton as a brand pretty much, but Nicolas Ghesquiere turned it out. I was in awe of how much I actually liked so many of the looks that hit the runway. There are a bunch of looks that I would really love to see on a red carpet (and with a bevy of spoksemodels promoting films right now I am sure we will see a lot of it) but the opening look of this green one sleeved draped midi dress would be absolutely perfect. I think that the likes of Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett would be the ideal person to really make this dress come to life. The d-ring faux belt and studded fringe just add chic industrial details to this chic look.
Marchesa: Every season I fall in love with one look from the Marchesa collection and I get really disappointed when it doesn’t get worn. I don’t know why my favorite Marchesa looks never get worn, but it has been a trend for several seasons. So I might be cursing this gorgeous metallic silver gown which features a draped scarf top, a halter styled neckline, and jeweled floral embroidery, but it truly has major red carpet moment written all over it. I would absolutely die if Blake Lively hit the red carpet at any premiere or awards show wearing this gown. I think that her classic Hollywood glamour would really showcase this as a winning red carpet look. Hopefully this isn’t the only time that we will see this gown.
Monse: 3 runway shows in for Monse and they just keep getting better. I am intrigued to see where the house will head as the founders/creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim prepare to return to the house that gave them their start, Oscar de la Renta, as the lead creative directors. They will be designing both Oscar and Monse and I am looking forward to seeing how the duo will progress both labels. There were a bevy of chic modern red carpet moments that were showcased on the runway at the Monse Spring 2017 RTW presentation, and Jaime King has already worn a look from the collection on the red carpet already. The pants looks were among my favorite. Kim and Garcia are amazing at tailoring and this look which features a red, white and blue sequined stripe blouse and tapered black pants is a must see red carpet look for me. While it feels more like a look someone would wear for a less formal press event or some type of fundraiser I think that it has the potential to be a major moment. On the back of someone like Kate Bosworth this would be an A+ look.
Naeem Khan: I was super jealous when my friend and fellow blogger Kelly from Dream In Lace sent me the screenshot of the invitation she received to the Naeem Khan Spring 2017 RTW presentation during NYFW. Naeem is a show that I always love and he did not disappoint. Me and Kelly were texting during the show I was watching the livestream while she was there in person and we were fanning over how amazing the looks were. I was taken from the very first look with this ivory, black, and red gown which features an abstract swirl print, cape, sexy spit, asymmetrical neckline and a column styled silhouette. This is not exactly a look I see on the red carpet at a major awards show (though it could be a good SAG Awards gown,) but I think that Priyanka Chopra would absolutely slay the red carpet in this creation.
Nina Ricci: I have not been the biggest fan of Nina Ricci since Peter Copping left the label for Oscar de la Renta (which he has also now left,) but the Spring 2017 Collection really had me falling back in love with the label. The rich colors, the modern lines, and the sparkling sequins are always a win in my book. This purples scoop neck sequin stripe column gown is going to be a moment for whomever wears it, but there are a few people I think that the real presence to pull it off. Emma Stone and Naomi Watts were the first two faces that popped into my head as I watched this dress walk down the runway. Both would wear it in different ways and each would deliver an amazing moment with it, I wouldn’t be disappointed either way.
Olivier Theyskens: Paris Fashion Week was a week of anticipated debuts. While the debut of Olivier Theyskens much anticipated was overshadowed by Bouchra Jarrar at Lanvin, Pierpaolo Piccioli’s first solo collection for Valentino, and Maria Grazia Chiuri at Christian Dior it was one of my favorite collections. We could talk about how this collection shows why he should have been picked for the creative director role at Dior, but I want to distance Olivier from Dior now. I am incredibly grateful to have him back on the scene after his exit from Theory a few seasons ago. This collection was stripped down to glamour at its most simplistic and elegant. I am sure that French names like Berenice Bejo, Marion Cotillard, and Lea Seydoux would rock these looks on the red carpet. The person I would most love to see rock the red carpet in this gown would be Marion, but with her pregnancy I have a feeling that might not be the most likely look. Felicity Jones would also be a great choice.
Prabal Gurung: Prabal Gurung is a master. He went from unknown to star designer over night and has had continued success ever since. His star following is full of the chicest women on the face of the planet and he continues to pump out gorgeous looks season after season. I had a hard time picking a favorite look from the collection because as I watched the show on its livestream I gasped and oooed and ahhhed at almost every look that came down the runway. I will say however that the loudest gasp of excitement had to come from this rose pink gown which features an open back column styled silhouette and an exaggerated fan sleeve with a pleated cuff. This looks like something a modern Gwenevere would wear while presiding over King Arthur’s court. It is going to take someone with a lot of presence to wear this gown, and not let it wear her. The only woman I know with the gravitas to really own this gown is Cate Blanchett. I am praying that when it comes time for Cate to pick a gown for the red carpet that her stylist Elizabeth Stewart has this on the rack for her.
Rodarte: We are now in the final stretch of looks that I really want to see on the red carpet. Rodarte has long been a favorite of mine and I am glad to see that more and more celebrities are embracing the brand for the red carpet. Emma Stone, Elle Fanning, and Nicole Kidman have both already worn this collection on the red carpet and both were heavenly looks. I love the embellished lace cocktail dresses and evening gowns but I think that some of the more “casual” looks from the collection was my favorite. This ensemble which features a gold sequin and lace jacket top and pale yellow safety pin embellished trousers is a look that I am most looking forward to seeing on the red carpet. I thank that the perfect person to bring this look to life would be Milla Jovovich who will be gearing up for the promo tour of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This would be the perfect look for a photocall or one of the international premieres, or even just a late night talk show appearance.
Thom Browne: This is probably the most out there wish to see on a red carpet from this list. I have always loved the avant garde styling of Thom Browne but because the looks are so out there they don’t get a lot of love on the red carpet. It takes a woman with a lot of confidence and presence to make a Thom Browne look work on the red carpet. I would absolutely die if someone, actually one someone Tilda Swinton, took this silver sequined one sleeve sequin gown inspired by art deco styles and men’s suiting. The Doctor Strange promo tour has just kicked off so we are going to be seeing a lot of Tilda on the red carpet and I think that this would be a perfect look for an LA or London premiere.
Yves Saint Laurent: Paris Fashion Week kicked off with the debut of Anthony Vaccarello as thee brands creative director after the sudden exit of Heidi Slimane. While the style was similar to the look of the brand under Slimane, and of Vaccarello’s namesake line (which has been shuttered for the time being) it was the start of rebuilding the Yves Saint Laurent name. The signature shoe from the collection was among one of my favorite accessories of the Spring 2017 collections. From the clothes there were some really great looks but my favorite was a black and gold draped one sleeved mini dress. I think that there are so many people that would rock this, like models like Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss, but I think that I would most like to see Game of Thrones starlet Sophie Turner turn this into a gorgeous red carpet moment.
Zuhair Murad: Last but not least we have the Zuhair Murad collection. Zuhair doesn’t show a runway collection during RTW fashion week but always releases a look book with the looks. The collection is always full of pretty dresses but I am usually not like drawn to put a look from the collection on my gotta see list. This season it is this black and silver beaded short suit with a sexy sheer bustier that really spoke to me. I like it when we see new versions of menswear meet femininity and this is one that I know will get a red carpet moment. The perfect person to really make this look come to life on the red carpet is Kristen Stewart. I like Kristen and Chanel but I am never really blown away by their partnership. When Kirsten wears Zuhair she always gives me chills (the only time she has ever been on my best dressed list is when she has worn Zuhair.) I think that this would be amazing as her platinum blonde locks would just add rock glam to this ensemble.
I want to thank all of my loyal readers for continuing to bear with me as I go through the final days of the political campaign that I am working on. The posts might be sporadic but they are done with heart and love. Thanks for all your continued to support.
