Cannes 2017: L’Orealista’s Red Carpet Wish List Part 1

The time has come! All of wishes that I am going to be posting over the next three and a half weeks are going to be focused on the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. This year there might be a few less days, but I think that it is shaping up to be the best year fashion wise ever. From photocalls to premieres and parties to sidewalk style there is nothing that we cannot see. Cannes is all about Couture. We can see someone kick the day off with a couture cocktail dress before noon and the looks just keep bigger and bigger. The slate of guest and premieres that are confirmed to attend this year is amazing and I get more and more excited with each passing day. Tonight might be the Met Gala, but I am kinda already starting to move towards all things Cannes. L’Oreal Paris is a presenting sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival and every year they send at least 2 of their spokesmodels (dubbed L’Orealista’s) to walk the red carpet every day just to add glamour to the red carpet. These become some of my favorite looks of the festival and I can’t wait to see what these gorgeous L’Oreal ladies will bring to the red carpet this year. Over the next six days you will be able to take in three wishes for each L’Orealista to wear for their duties during the festival.  Aishwarya Rai is a gorgeous actress, and former Miss World, who represents L’Oreal in India and has become quite the fixture on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. Last year Aishwarya celebrated 15 years of walking the red carpet at Cannes and was gorgeous in gowns by Elie Saab and Ali Younes Couture. This year I am really interested to see what she will follow that up with. I went on a search for the perfect three looks for Aishwarya and went to a few of her favorite labels. First is a light blue and gold Elie Saab Spring 2017 Couture strapless ballgown inspired by the river Nile. This gown screams Cannes and really the only person I have thought of in reference to this gown is Aishwarya. I think that even though this gown is sheer on the runway that Aishwarya would have it lined for the red carpet. One thing that we can almost always expect from Aishwarya on the red carpet at Cannes is that one of her looks will be a traditional Indian dress. So on a search I went. Thanks to my friend at the Instagram account Bollywood Style File I looked into Manish Malhotra and found this gorgeous mango colored sequin embroidered lehenga for Aishwarya to wear on the red carpet. Usually we see Aishwarya stick to a very neutral palette on the red carpet, so this bold yellow is a bit out of the norm for her but I think that if you can’t wear color on the French Riviera where ‘Cannes’ you? Sorry, not sorry, for the bad pun. And the final wish I have for Aishwarya to wear on the red carpet at Cannes is this year is this absolutely gorgeous bold red Ralph & Russo Spring 2017 Couture strapless ballgown which features a tiered skirt and a sweetheart neckline. This gown is surely going to be on someone at Cannes and I just think that the regal glamour that Aishwarya exudes on the red carpet will just make this a truly major moment. Any of these could be contenders for my Best Dressed of Cannes list. This set of wishes is kinda a bust because I have heard that Cheryl Cole will NOT be making the jaunt from London to Cannes to support L’Oreal this year. Instead Cheryl will be bonding with her newborn baby. So I guess these are what I would have wanted to see Cheryl wear if she was attending this year. Some of Cheryl’s past Cannes moments have been among some of my absolute favorite and I think that each of these looks could have added to that list. The black Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition Fall 2016 ensemble which features mermaid inspired embellished top and silk organdi a-line skirt with pockets is perfect for the French Riviera. As is the soft romantic light pink Giambattista Valli Spring 2017 Couture strapless ruffled high low gown. The bold choice was this electric blue metallic Zuhair Murad Spring 2017 Couture ballgown. We have seen Cheryl wear gorgeous mermaid and column gown at Cannes, but never a full ballgown and I was hoping that this would be the year. But I guess I will have to wait until next year. Last year was the first time that Dame Helen Mirren joined her fellow L’Orealista’s on the red carpet at the Palais de Festivals for one premiere and then at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala. I was glad to see her on the red carpet, but I was a little underwhelmed. I am hoping that if she makes the jaunt to Cannes this year that Helen really delivers something really wow. Any of the three gowns that I have picked have picked for Helen will leave me in awe. I fell in love with this emerald green Alexis Mabille Pre-Fall 2016 gown which features a gold button embellished square neckline, full length sleeves, and an a-line maxi skirt the moment I saw it and I really do think that Helen would look oh so glamorous on the red carpet at Cannes wearing this gown. I don’t think that we have ever seen Helen wear this silhouette, at least one that isn’t covered in lace or embellishment and I think that this would be a very beautiful way to express it. The champagne lace caped Elie Saab Fall 2016 Couture embellished gown is much more a standard Helen red carpet moment. I think that this would be absolutely amazing on Helen, but I think that the starburst of crystal feathers at the neckline are a little much and I think that for Helen that they should be toned down or removed completely. And the last look that I have picked for Helen is this gorgeous grey Zac Posen Fall 2017 RTW jacquard gown which  features an off the shoulder neckline, draped bodice and sleeves, and a column full length skirt with a ruffle design at the front. This is one of those looks that could go very mother of the bride, but I can see that with a really great statement necklace and Helen’s regal presence that this look look anything but mother of the bride. Katrina Kaif was announced as a face of L’Oreal Paris and attended her first Cannes Film Festival back in 2015 and we haven’t seen her since. I wonder if we have seen the last of Katrina at Cannes or if she will be back. Usually I hear about the Bollywood starlets that are heading to Cannes and I have heard confirmations about everyone else who represents L’Oreal Paris India with the exception of Katrina so i still have no idea if she will be back at Cannes this year. I picked a few pretty gowns for Katrina to wear on the red carpet the first being a very elegant sea green Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition Fall 2015 chiffon gown. I think that the gown would be something simple and elegant for Katrina to wear for Cannes, but I think that it would help her get back on track. The boldest of the looks that I picked is this red Oscar de la Renta Fall 2017 RTW gown features a strapless neckline, a fitted bodice, and a high low hem. For her first Cannes Katrina wore Peter Copping’s first collection for Oscar de la Renta and a red gown by Elie Saab. This gown is the perfect mesh of the spirit of those two looks, but in a much more impactful and glamorous manner. Finally I went to Ralph & Russo. I tend to love when international stars wear traditional garb on the red carpet at Cannes and while I didn’t go the route of an Indian designer for Katrina but this silver embellished ice blue Ralph & Russo Spring 2017 Couture gown likens to a saree and I think that it perfectly meshes the high glam of Cannes and traditional Indian dressing for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. Rounding out today’s L’Orealista wishes is the always gorgeous Naomi Watts. Last year I was majorly underwhelmed with the choices that Naomi made for her L’Oreal duties. I expect that big caliber stars bring big caliber looks to the red carpet. While her Armani Prive and Michael Kors gowns were far from fashion faux pas I know she has more in her than that. So for my wishes for her to wear this year I made sure that I upped the ante on the doses of glamour. Cannes is a red carpet that sees gowns the rival those that walk the red carpet the the Met Gala. I went with three gorgeous gowns that would ensure that Naomi would be on top form. I am shocked that this light pink Atelier Versace Fall 2016 Couture gown which features a portrait neckline, asymmetrical peplum, sky high split, tired details, and black sequin lining made it through fall festival season and awards season and still hasn’t been worn. This gown was one of my favorite looks from last July and I think that Naomie would really make it a gorgeous moment, especially at Cannes. Now I only went with one bold train gown for Naomi to rock up the steps at the Palais de Festivals. There were several of the looks that came down the runway at the Elie Saab Spring 2017 Couture presentation that I can picture seeing Naomi wearing at Cannes, but it was this gold embellished halter gown with a tulle train that I most want to see Naomi step onto the red carpet wearing. And my final wish for today is for Naomi Watts to really give relaxed glamour via this mint greed halter neck Valentino Spring 2017 Couture a-line gown. This gown is definitely something that screams Cannes, and I think that Naomi would be the perfect person to breathe some life into it on the red carpet.

The 2017 Cannes Film Festival opens Wednesday May 17 and runs through Sunday May 28, 2017.
