2018 End of the Year Style Awards: Entertainer of the Year

Concert tours give music stars the opportunity to show case looks much like a movie tour for an actress. Many of the biggest names in fashion create wardrobes for pop stars to perform in. Some, like Adele, pick one or two looks and wear them through the whole tour. Some have a wide range of looks, but they are the same at every tour stop. Beyonce did the exact opposite of that this year. She called up all of her designer friends and had them create looks, some she snatched right off the runway, for her to rock while on her On The Run II tour this summer with Jay-Z (and for her two weekends performing at Coachella.) The BeyChella wardrobe, custom designed with HBCU’s in mind by Olivier Rousting for Balmain, was enough to bring home this award. Again while most Coachella performers keep their shows exactly the same in every way for both weekends of the desert music festival Beyonce brought a black and fold drum majorette ensemble and yellow hoodies to the stage weekend one, and slightly changed things up with a silver drum majorette ensemble and pink hoodies for weekend number two. Also unlike most Coachella performers, even the female ones, Bey had several wardrobe changes throughout her two hour set (did anyone else stay up to watch the livestream?)  The looks from her On The Run II tour were so incredibly varried. She brought body suits, denim, jumpsuits, gowns, capes, mini dresses, suits, and major hats to the various stages over the course of the tour. She called up Gucci, Mugler, Versace, Alexandre Vauthier, Balmain, Versace Dundas, Burberry, Gucci, LaQuan Smith, LaRoxx, Roberto Cavalli, Shahar Avnet, Vex Latex, and Vivienne Westwood to create custom looks for the tour. She recreated one of her “Apeshit” video looks in a custom suit from Peter Pilotto covered in Swarovski crystals, and snatched looks right off the runways of Valentino, Off White, Tom Ford, and Rami Kadi. Every time I thought Bey had become bae enough during this tour she brought another major moment finishing out the tour in a sporty meets couture gown from Off-White that I was for sure reserving for Zendaya to wear on a major red carpet. This tour just proved that one can never know what to expect from Mrs. Knowles.
