Here we go! It is finally time. The time we have all been waiting for all awards season long. Today we kick off my wishes for the red carpet at the 2019 Academy Awards. I start every major red carpet looking back at how many times a look from that red carpet has been featured on my Best Dressed of the Year lists since I started If I Was A Stylist. You would think that as one of the biggest nights for red carpet fashion, but only 3 times since I started If I Was A Stylist that an Oscar red carpet look has made my Best Dressed of the Year list. The first was the Givenchy Couture gown Anne Hathaway wore while hosting the Oscars in 2011, the second was Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford caped gown in 2012, and then it wasn’t until last year thanks to Nicole Kidman in custom Armani Prive did an Oscar night look make the list again. I want to see stars bring the drama and glamour to the red carpet giving me several Best Dressed of the Year contenders.
Allison Janney won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar last year, and she is going to be on hand again this year as a presenter. I really want Allison to dazzle me on the red carpet. I LOVED the red cape sleeve Reem Acra gown that she wore last year. It was one of her best looks ever and I want to see her deliver another major moment on the Oscars red carpet this Sunday. I went back to that same designer for the perfect gown for her to wear this year with this gold Reem Acra Fall 2019 RTW fully sequined gown which features cold shoulders, long sleeves, beaded straps, a v-neckline, sheath silhouette, and a slight train. This is definitely a bit of a risk since Allison is usually a little more covered than the top of this gown would show, but I could see her stylist Tara Sweenen trying to convince her this is the best option. I would almost want more of a train than the gown has in the look book for Allison to wear for an Oscars red carpet. Add a sleek updo, smokey eyes, red lips, a gold Sophia Webster ‘Clara Crystal’ box clutch, a pair of custom gold Sophia Webster ‘Coco Crystal’ metallic leather pumps, and Norman Silverman white and yellow diamond chandelier earrings and I know this will be the perfect look for her to wear on this red carpet.
This year will be the first time that Constance Wu attends the Oscars. While her filmĀ Crazy Rich Asians might not have gotten any Oscar love like it did at most of the other major awards season she is confirmed as one of the many presenters this Sunday. She hasn’t been killing the game all awards season, save for the nude Vera Wang ballgown she wore for the Golden Globe Awards and I am ready for her to give me a look to love again. With that in mind it is a little bit of a risk picking a look off the Dior runway if a major moment is my goal. I think that this barely mint Christian Dior Spring 2019 Couture pleated a-line gown which features think straps, ruffled bodice detail, a v-neckline, and intricate gold beaded embroidery could go either really good or really bad and I am praying that on Constance it would be absolute feminine glamour. I think that with a romantic updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of champagne gold glitter Sophia Webster ‘Rosalind’ crystal heel sandals, and yellow sapphire and white diamond Van Cleef & Arpels floral drop earrings that this look would be perfect for Constance to deliver on this red carpet.
Emilia Clarke has been wearing a lot of Dior lately, and it hasn’t been working for me. I know she has the potential to really make me go WOW do her Dior looks have made me really sad. She is also going to be a first time presenter at this years Academy Awards and I want to see Emilia give us major glam on the red carpet wearing this red Ralph & Russo Spring 2018 Couture chiffon gown which sunray pleated asymmetric draped bodice, cap sleeves, a sash drape from the sleeve, and thigh-high leg slit. This gown is gorgeous and it honestly shocks me that it hasn’t been worn on a red carpet since it was first presented a little over a year ago. I would ask Ralph & Russo to make sure the the gown is lined for Emilia. But adding a pair of red Gianvito Rossi ‘Tabasco’ satin strappy sandals, a sleek vintage inspired updo, defined eyes, red lips, and dazzling David Morris diamond and ruby chandelier earrings would definitely ensure that this look is glamour defined from head to toe.
I have been #TeamLadyGaga to take home the Best Actress trophy for her performance in A Star Is Born all awards season. That is until last night when I finally watched The Wife staring Glenn Close. Now with that being said I am definitely still expecting Gaga to walk away with a little gold man by the end of Sunday nights telecast. I think that after she has swept all the awards shows including Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA, and Grammy Awards for Best Original Song it would be a major upset to see anyone else win. I mentioned in a post the other day for the Valentino Couture gown I want to see Gaga wear for the Vanity Fair party after the Oscars that I am definitely expecting at least three fashion moments from her over the course of the evening, but I am wishing for four. So you already have seen that after party wish now lets get to the three looks I want to see from Gaga during the actual telecast. First is the red carpet look. I am honestly SHOCKED that Gaga hasn’t worn a single Versace gown during this promo tour or awards season, I am almost praying that she is holding out to wear a design by her good friend Donatella on the red carpet at the Oscars. I found this dramatic ‘Eventail’ strapless gown which features a dramatic bow back train ans a sheer 3D floral embellished column gown construction from the Atelier Versace Spring 2019 RTW collection and I fell in love with it. I definitely think it is something right up actress Gaga’s ally. I would however see if Donatella would custom make the gown in gold for Gaga. Big winners at the Oscars usually wear gold. It is a fact pattern that no one can deny and I definite can picture this gown with the silk gazzar in champagne gold, the flowers in antique gold and a gold crystal embellished lining added to really make this look sparkle. That is that glamour and drama that I am craving from Gaga to bring to life on this red carpet. She has been partnered with Tiffany & Co. all awards season so I would imagine that they will continue to pay her to wear their diamonds on the red carpet at the Oscars. I would dig into the brands extensive archive picking a pair of vintage Tiffany & Co. by Jean Schlumberger diamond, yellow gold, and pearl wing earrings and a matching vintage yellow gold and diamond bracelet to compliment the custom gold version of this gown. Finishing the look with a pair of gold Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Casati’ faux pearl embellished leather platform sandals, a vintage inspired updo, defined eyes, and antique rose pink lips would add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble. For her change from red carpet to performance I want to go with something a little unexpected. Most performers go with gowns or suits to perform on the Oscars stage, I decided I wanted to mix what we expect from Lady Gaga with who her A Star Is Born character was. As I was looking for the perfect look that defined both Gaga and Ally I found this black and white Givenchy Spring 2019 Couture ensemble which features a white feather and pearl embellished structured crop top and a pair of black high waisted shorts. That is exactly what I would expect from Gaga on this stage. It is edgy and glamorous and very rock and roll. It is the closest I think she would get to a vintage tour t-shirt and cutoff denim shorts on the Oscars stage. This look would need Gaga to rock a pair of black Jimmy Choo ‘Belle’ crystal embellished mesh pointed toe stiletto ankle boots, rocker hair like she wore to the Grammy Awards, smokey eyes, nude lips, and fishnets to really be the perfect version of Gaga meets Ally meets Oscars. Going back to glamour for the rest of the show, and hopefully to pick up an Oscar, I would love to see Gaga wearing this silver fully beaded Paolo Sebastian Spring 2019 Couture gown which features a sheer yoke, beaded fringe cape, and a column silhouette. It gives distinct Hedy Lamar vibes and I know that is something that Gaga would be drawn to. Wouldn’t this gown look gorgeous on the Oscars stage accessorized with a little gold man in Gaga’s hands? Another hair change to have old Hollywood waves like the model in the lookbook adding winged eyes, red lips, a pair of blush satin Versace platform sandals, and a pair of diamond and emerald Tiffany & Co. by Jean Schlumberger cluster earrings would all but guarantee a major winners fashion moment for Gaga.
Another almost certain Oscar winner is Rami Malek. I wasn’t so sure heading into this season that Rami was going to sweep but when he won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody I knew he would go all the way. I will say I have been a little disappointed in Rami’s style this awards season. I was hoping he was going to push the boundaries of menswear just a little more than he has. I did appreciate his so pale of pink that in most photos it looked white custom Louis Vuitton suit at BAFTA Awards and I decided to actually go with white as the starting point for the perfect look for Rami to wear for the Oscars. I saw this white sequined Givenchy Fall 2019 Menswear tuxedo jacket in the brands lookbook last month and have been waiting ever so patiently for this wish list to be able to use it praying that the wish wouldn’t come true before I got a change to put it out there. I think that this white sequined wide lapel tuxedo jacket would certainly have gotten Freddie’s seal of approval. Now while Freddie may have worn it exactly as it was presented in the lookbook I can imagine that Rami will have to pair it with standard styling including black tuxedo pants, a white tuxedo shirt, black satin bow tie, and simple black patent leather oxfords for this to be the kind of look he would wear for the Oscars. I do think that adding this jacket would be the perfect way for Rami to pay a bit of fashion homage to Freddie on Oscar night.
The 2019 Academy Awards will take place on Sunday February 24, 2019.
