Now that we are past my wishes for the 2019 Venice Film Festival it is time to move on to the big red carpet coming on Monday: the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. I am always excited to see what will happen on this red carpet. It really is a space where anything goes. Planning wishes for this red carpet has been a lot of fun. I didn’t do as many custom looks for this red carpet as I typically do for a major red carpet, but there are a lot of major moments that have come down the runways. That being said my first wish for the 2019 MTV VMA’s I am starting with a custom moment. Ariana Grande is the face of Givenchy right now and I am ready to see her first red carpet in the brand. I decided to go the custom route for Ariana after falling in love with this silver sequin bubble skirt and organza underskirt as it came down the Givenchy Fall 2019 Couture runway. That being said I wasn’t a fan of the black taffeta bodice that the dress was designed with, so I sent it to Evita and had her work her magic. She actually sent me both versions as individual versions for this years red carpet. I saw both and immediately thought it would make a perfect convertible moment for Ariana to wear for the 2019 VMA’s. Ari typically wears short dresses for music awards red carpets, so I thought this gives the best of both worlds. For the red carpet I would want to see Ariana bring the glam with the bubble sequin dress with a structured bodice and thin straps with the metallic silver organza underskirt that it was paired with on the runway. When she gets inside I would have Ariana remove that underskirt and hike up the pickups making it more of a mini dress using the ribbon details. I think it would make for such a major red carpet moment for Ariana, easily one of her best. It would be finished perfectly with a sleek high bun, thick winged eyeliner, dark red lips, a pair of silver Givenchy slingback strappy sandals, and dazzling white diamond and black enamel Nikos Koulis ‘Oui’ collection chandelier earrings.
Billie Eilish will make her first major red carpet appearance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. The “Bad Guy” artist is definitely one to watch. She was just invited to a Chanel celebration and I feel like will be embraced by more of high fashion soon. In an interview with Vogue Australia Billie said “It kind of gives nobody the opportunity to judge what your body looks like. I want layers and layers and layers and I want to be mysterious. You don’t know what’s underneath and you don’t know what’s on top.” She just clarified that comment after it has been taken that she doesn’t want to be sexualized saying to Pharell Williams in V Magazine’s September Issue: “It’s more, just, I wear what I want to wear, but of course, everyone sees it as, ‘She’s saying no to being sexualized’ and ‘She’s saying no to being the stereotypical female’.” I see it as Billie wanting to have this air of mystery and anonymity about her and she has the perfect stylist to embrace that in Samantha Burkhart (who most iconically dresses SIA.) So to keep that air of mystery alive I decided to to keep the more oversized vibe that Billie has been embracing as of late in play picking this baby boy blue Louis Vuitton Spring 2020 Menswear loose fit suit which features a matching cotton t-shirt and a LV logo harness. I went to a friend of mine with about 20 options from everyone from Giambattista Valli and Givenchy to Zac Posen and Gucci, but she was immediately drawn directly to this Louis Vuitton look. It was one of the first things I looked at too, but given the fact that Diet Prada ripped Virgil Abloh apart for using the LV logo like Stefano Pilati did with the YSL logo a decade ago I wonder if this look will actually be embraced as a celebrity moment outside of someone like Kanye, Jay-Z, or Kim Kardashian. I can definitely see this as being one of Billie’s first groundbreaking moment into the world of high fashion. Honestly I would keep the look with the runways sneakers adding long center parted locks, smokey eyes behind tiny sunglasses, and nude lips to finish this look perfectly.
Halsey has a couple of nominations at this years VMAs, but given the fact the she isn’t performing or presenting I wonder if she will be on this red carpet Monday night. I go back and forth when it comes to her style. She left long time stylist Maeve Reilly last year and honestly ever since I have questioned, and not in a good way, what she has been thinking when getting ready for the red carpet. What I love most about Halsey is that she is a style chameleon. She is always playing with her aesthetic. One day she will be a princess and the next a rock and roll and the next a mermaid. What is always consistent is that whatever she is wearing she always infuses a bit of punk into her vibe. For Monday’s red carpet I want to see Halsey deliver an uber sexy moment wearing this black silk Versace Fall 2019 RTW cutout bondage inspired gown which features gold hardware, a column skirt, and a thigh high split. Now she has never been dressed by Versace in the past, at least not main line, and that might make this a stretch, but I definitely believe this is a perfect moment for her to wear on the VMAS red carpet. I would finish this look with a buzz cut, defined eyes, bold red lips, a black and gold Judith Leiber Couture ‘Beverage Can Savage’ crystal embellished minaudiere, a pair of black Casadei ‘Julia Lily Rose’ crystal embellished strappy sandals, and statement Messika “ My Twin Mono Hoop” 18k gold and white diamond hoop earrings.
Taylor Swift dropped her new album LOVER and I have been listing to it all morning. She is nominated for several VMAs this year and will also be opening the show this year. I wonder if that will mean she skips the red carpet all together? She has been very selective with the red carpets she has walked for the last 2 years only attending a small handful of events. If she does I decided to go with a custom Stella McCartney cocktail dress. Taylor name dropped the British designer in her song “London Boy” on her new album and Taylor does have a collaboration with Stella right now to help promote the album. The custom sea glass blue one sleeve Stella McCartney mini dress which features a structured metal detail on the neckline, all over sequin embroidery, pink and silver beaded heart and star appliqués, a wavy mini hem, and a fringe sash draped from a single hip. Each part of this look comes from a different Stella McCartney design and colored in the pastel vibe Taylor has embraced for this album. Styling the dress with a romantic updo, defined cat eyes, punchy pink lips, white Christian Louboutin ‘Faradavavie’ see through vinyl and metallic leather strappy pearl studded sandals, and a pair of dazzling Anabela Chan ‘Blush Opal Passiflora’ chandelier earrings in 18k rose and white gold vermeil with 18k gold earring posts, laboratory-grown and created gemstones including pink sapphires, lilac amethysts, yellow sapphires, white diamonds and blush pink opals would definitely ensure this is a perfect moment for Taylor to bring to life on the VMAs red carpet.
The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Monday August 26, 2019.
