2020 Cannes Film Festival What Could Have Been Wish List: “Last Night in Soho”

Edgar Wright’s latest has been veiled in secrecy for months, but no bother. After all, when have Wright’s films ever benefited from leaking loglines? Who hears “zombie comedy” and foresees what Shaun of the Dead would become? In any case, what we do know is more than enough to get excited. Featuring a darling cast of rising stars like Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy alongside bona fide legends like Diana Rigg and Terence Stamp, the Last Night In Soho is reported to be a “psychological horror film” with some sort of time travel twist. A debut on the Croisette for the film, still set to hit theaters in September from Focus Features, would have been a match made in a movie-lover heaven. It seemed like this film was set for a midnight slot which are usually not among the most attended premieres, but since this is a wish let’s make it a star studded premiere right?Anya Taylor Joy started working with Law Roach earlier this year. I have been waiting to see Law take on Cannes for a really long time and I think that for Anya’s first Cannes since she won the Chopard Trophy, an award for rising talent, that the two would make major fashion magic on the red carpet. I’ve picked two superb moments for Anya to wear had this event actually taken place. For the photocall I would have loved to see Anya deliver this champagne gold, robins egg blue, and blush floral paisley lamé Zimmerman Fall 2020 RTW midi dress which features a ruffled neckline, long puffy sleeves, and banded construction throughout. The look is fun and fanciful which is something Anya loves to wear on the red carpet. I would strip back the runways styling ditching the hat, layered belts, and boots in favor of a sleek casual updo, defined eyes, soft blush pink lips, a pair of beige satin Roger Vivier ‘Broche Vivier’ low block heel crystal buckle detail pointed toe pumps, and simple multi-tone pink sapphire Brumani dome stud earrings. Now for the premiere I am going for something a little more conceptual customized from the Miu Miu Fall 2020 RTW collection. I would create a custom strapless taffeta gown for Anya with a strapless sweetheart neckline on a silk bustier bodice featuring intricate beading like you see on the sheer bodice of the runway look above, I would want a defined waist with the marigold asymmetrical taffeta sash, and a two tiered bubble skirt in the black taffeta. It is definitely a really conceptual gown and not the usual lengthening that I come to think of when it comes to modifying runway looks, but I really do think it would be a major moment for Anya to wear for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. A sleek side parted bouffant updo, defined winged eyes, red lips, a pair of black satin Miu Miu sky high chunky heel platform crystal embellished sandals, and statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection teardrop citrine earrings set intricate white diamond floral detail would ensure this look is conceptual and glamorous. Thomasin McKenzie has definitely lived up to the One To Watch label I gave her in my 2018 End of the Year Style Awards. She has consistently delivered glamour on the red carpet wearing labels like Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Dior, Jason Wu, Schiaparelli Couture, Oscar de la Renta, Rodarte, Salvatore Ferragamo, Miu Miu, and more. For her Cannes Film Festival debut I turned to two new labels for Thomasin to wear to promote Last Night In Soho. For the photocall I went to the very ladylike side of Thomasin’s style picking this khaki Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2020 safari shirt dress which features a collared neckline, black and yellow plaid on the neck and sleeves, short wide sleeves, pocket detail on the bust, a mini length, drop waist, and a pleated a-line skirt. I definitely think that Thomasin is a perfect Herrera girl and I think that this dress would have been a perfect look for her to wear in Cannes for a casual photocall especially styled with a loose wavy bob, defined eyes, pink lips, a pair of yellow and beige raffia Malone Souliers ‘Maisie’ pointed toe kitten heel mules, and a feminine touch from Bulgari ‘Fiorever’ 18kt rose gold flower stud earrings set with two central diamonds and pavé diamonds. Now for the premiere I dug into the Armani Prive archives dusting off this gorgeous lavender ballgown from the Armani Prive Spring 2016 Couture collection. This super glamorous strapless ballgown which features a soft water print which is covered with thousands of clear paillettes covering the entire gown adding a liquid shine to the gown, which is then covered in a layer of silk organza to really make this look the perfect look for Thomasin to bring to life on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. I am honestly shocked that this gown hasn’t been worn on the red carpet yet, but I am hoping that it is just waiting for the perfect person at the perfect event at the perfect time to deliver a major glamour moment. I do think that is what would happen seeing Thomasin wearing this gown in Cannes styled with a sleek retro updo, defined smokey eyes, soft rose pink lips, a pair of silver metallic leather Jimmy Choo ‘Tris’ floral crystal brooch detailed peep toe ankle strap sandals, and a dazzling white diamond Bulgari High Jewelry floral collar necklace. Camila Cabello was announced as a face of L’Oreal Paris a little over a year ago. I was hoping to see her on the red carpet in Cannes last year, but due to her tour responsibilities with Taylor Swift she wasn’t able. I hadn’t seen anything that was going to conflict with her attending Cannes this year so I was really intrigued to see what she would bring to the festivals red carpets to promote the beauty brand. The first look I thought of was this aqua blue silk satin asymmetrically draped Elie Saab Spring 2020 Couture mini dress which features a bow detail, asymmetric cross draped neckline, long sleeves, belted waist, and a dramatic train. I wouldn’t usually pick a look like this for Cannes, but it just works for Camila’s sense of style and since she isn’t there as an actress I thought that it works for a bit of fun glamour on the red carpet at the Palais de Festivals. With a risk like this in style I would need Camila to bring perfect styling to the look. So I would pair this gown with a big braided bun updo, defined eyes, bright pink lips, a pair of silver crystal embellished Rene Caovilla ‘Cleo’ coil strap platform sandals, and statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection paraiba tourmaline, sapphire, and amethyst paisley drop earrings to make sure this moment is glamorous perfection from head to toe. Gong Li always knows how to deliver regal glamour on the red carpet in Cannes. I think back on her past looks at the festival and immediately remember dramatic moments from Ralph & Russo and Roberto Cavalli Couture. For this years red carpet I would have loved to see Gong turn to the Chinese inspired Elie Saab Fall 2019 Couture collection. We have already seen Gong wear two looks from this collection one at the Venice Film Festival last year and the other at the Toronto International Film Festival immediately after. For the Cannes Film Festival I picked something even more regal than any of those other gowns with this deep maroon red Qipao inspired gown which features intricate gold embroidery, a gold metal and velvet belted waist, column skirt, and a dramatic attached cape. This look would just ooze regal glamour and I know that Gong Li has the presence to really make it a major moment. Now with the gown itself being such a statement I would style it with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, matching deed red lips, a pair of gold snakeskin embossed Jimmy Choo ‘Talika’ crystal embellished strap pointed toe pumps, and Precious Chopard collection butterfly drop earrings with rubies and white diamonds in 18k yellow gold. I know that all of these pieces put together would make for that major moment I want to see from Gong. Today’s final wish for a look I would have loved to see in Cannes is this major electric blue liquid sequin Valentino Spring 2020 Couture mermaid gown which I want to see brought to life at the festival by Priyanka Chopra. The Bollywood turned Hollywood starlet is a brand ambassador for Chopard and attended the festival with her hubby Nick Jonas as guests of the jeweler last year and I really wanted to see her on the red carpet again this year. Priyanka knows how to deliver glamour and drama on the red carpet and I feel that is exactly what is needed to really make this look work perfectly. The perfect fit of this gown paired with a sleek updo, navy smokey eyes, red lips, a pair of matching electric blue metallic leather Saint Laurent ‘Zoe’ pointed toe pumps, and a statement white diamond and sapphire Chopard Red Carpet Collection floral burst collar necklace would definitely make this look perfection.
