2020 Cannes Film Festival What Could Have Been Wish List: “Summerland”

Olivier Award-winning playwright has long plotted her jump to feature film making: in 2012, she won the BAFTA JJ Screenwriting Bursary, which she then spent on writing the original script for what would become her feature directorial debut. Starring Gemma Arterton as a reclusive writer, the film is set during World War II and finds Arterton’s Alice unexpectedly in charge of a young man after the London Blitz. The film also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Penelope Wilton, and Lucas Bond and promises something increasingly rare: a new look at wartime through the eyes of a female lead. The film wrapped in November of last year, and we may not see it at a film festival now with a July 31st release date, but hopefully there will still be some sort of premiere for the film. For now let’s imagine what could have been had the film gotten to premiere in high style on the Croisette in Cannes. Gemma Arterton knows how to deliver some superb fashion moments on the red carpet and I was looking forward to seeing her walk the red carpets in Cannes promoting Summerland. I feel like Elizabeth Saltzman, Gemma’s stylist, would make sure that she is on her a-game for her first Cannes since 2012. I wanted fun, colorful, and glamorous moments for Gemma to wear while promoting this film. So starting with these wishes with a sunshine yellow Rahul Mishra Fall 2020 RTW ensemble which features a sleeveless shell top with intricate 3D floral embroidery on the lower half as well as a pair of front pleated straight leg pants. It is honestly one of my favorite wishes from all of my 2020 what could have been posts. It would be such a chic yet fun moment for Gemma to wear and given the photocall setting in Cannes I know it would be a major fashion moment. Style this look with a loose updo, defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of matching sunshine yellow Francesco Russo sculpted pointed toe pumps, and even more yellow via Fernando Jorge ‘Gravity’ 18k set serpentine and diamond drop earrings and I know it would be an absolutely major moment for Gemma. For the premiere I kept with the same sunshine vibe, but in a super glam manner with this pale pink silk crêpe Ralph & Russo Spring 2020 Couture column gown featuring oversized pale pink and mustard silk taffeta bows and sashes. I adore this gown and it seemed destined for the red carpet in Cannes. Gemma would definitely be able to bring this look to life in just the perfect manner especially styled with a sleek updo, thick defined eyes, pink lips, metallic gold Jimmy Choo ‘Thaia’ crystal embellished strappy sandals, and dazzling white and yellow diamond Chopard Red Carpet Collection floral drop earrings. Gugu Mbatha-Raw would have made her Cannes Film Festival debut this year had Summerland been chosen to screen at this years festival. I have long loved Gugu’s sense of style and I would have loved to see her rise to the occasion. So I went to the runways to find some major moments for her to bring to life on the red carpet. For the photocall I went for archive couture picking this fire engine red Chanel Spring 2015 Couture ensemble which features a sleeveless pleated collared ankle length duster coat layered over a v-neck sleeveless basket woven dress with a fringe hem. I LOVE this look and think it would be a super chic moment for Gugu to pull out of the Chanel archives for Cannes. Now while presented the belt was used to create a drop waist, I would hike it up to her natural waist to make sure we can elongate her torso and make her seem super tall. Finishing the look in the perfect monochromatic manner with soft tight curls, defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of red Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Tiphaine’ low heel crystal embellished slingback sandals, and Atelier Swarovski red crystal ‘Tigris’ stud earclips would definitely make this a major color moment for Gugu. For the premiere I went to 1930’s glamour vibes picking this dusty robins egg blue silk charmuse Rodarte Fall 2020 RTW ruffled cape gown which features a hand painted red and burgundy floral print and a square neckline. Now to round out this look in the most glamorous manner I would finish the look with a romantic updo, defined eyes, deep red lips, metallic bronze Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ ankle strap sandals, and dazzling Boucheron rose gold set garnet and white diamond drop earrings.Cindy Bruna knows how to deliver fierce glamour on the red carpet and I always look forward to seeing what she has in store for us on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. So I am really bummed that we will not be seeing her bring something major to the festival this year. As I was thinking about the looks I wanted to see Cindy wearing this silver grey fit to flare Michael Cinco Spring 2020 Couture off the shoulder gown which features intricate beaded embroidery, lilac lining, dramatic ruffled cape sleeves that turn into a dramatic train, and a daring central split came into my mind. I definitely think that Cindy would have turn this gown into a dramatic moment for the supermodel to bring to life in Cannes. I really do believe that wearing this gown with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, matte antique rose pink lips, a pair of silver glitter Le Silla ‘Gwen’ ankle strap platform sandals, and a glamorous white diamond multi cut three strand de Grisogono High Jewelry necklace that Cindy would have made my Best of Cannes list.Eva Herzigova always jets to Cannes to walk the Cannes Film Festival red carpet as a guest of Chopard. Over the last couple of years Eva has not delivered something major. She’s been wearing a lot of Dior Couture by Maria Grazia Chiuri, and well all my regular readers will know how I feel about that. I decided that as Gaultier has presented his final collection I thought why not find moments that never made it to the red carpet as a perfect look for Eva to bring to life this year. I have always loved this dark purple (almost black) silk strapless column gown from the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 Couture collection which features a layered neckline, and a light smokey amethyst bustle train and honestly can’t believe that someone like Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett hasn’t snatched it up yet. That being said I know that Eva has the retro elegance sensibilities to really bring this look to life on the red carpet. I would go full 40’s glam styling this look with a sleek retro updo, defined eyes, bold red lips, a dusty sterling rose purple satin Jimmy Choo ‘Cinderella Cloud’ clutch with a light blue crystal clasp, a pair of black Jimmy Choo ‘Bel’ sliver crystal embellished d’orsay slingback sandals, and a dazzling Chopard Red Carpet Collection choker in white gold, diamond, amethyst, and tanzanite to ensure this look brings nothing but glamour.I don’t know what would have brought Fan Bingbing to the Cannes Film Festival this year, but I know I wanted to see her bring her signature dramatic glamour to the red carpet. I would have loved seeing Fan bring this sky blue and nude Elie Saab Fall 2019 Couture caped ballgown which features a mandarin inspired collar, intricate crystal embroidery, a velvet and metal belted waist, and a dramatic cape. Fan has long loved Elie Saab creations and his Chinese inspired collection is calling her name. This gown on Fan in Cannes would have been a match made in heaven. A sleek bun updo, thick winged eyes, punchy pink lips, a champagne gold Judith Leiber Couture ‘Jazz Age’ marble print crystal embellished box clutch, statement light gold Aquazzura ‘Sundance’ platform chunky heel sandals, and a selection of statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection jewels including a pair of white and yellow diamond scalloped teardrop earrings and a white and yellow diamond cocktail ring would ensure that Fan graced the Cannes Film Festival red carpet in high glamour from head to toe.My final wish today is my last wish for Julianne Moore to wear in the capacity of promoting brands she is a friend of. I was hoping to see Julianne walk the red carpet at the Palais de Festivals for L’Oreal Paris as well as Chopard. She is the official face of L’Oreal and is a good friend of Chopard. So for the today’s wish I dug deep into the Yves Saint Laurent archives picking this black long sleeve column gown which features a rounded neckline, criss-cross pleated detail on the hips, and a bustle train off a hip from the brands Fall 1997 Couture collection. This gown is glamorous and I believe that Julianne would make it the sleek regal glamorous moment that it deserves. As I want Julianne to spend some time as the guest of Chopard I picked some major jewels to compliment this gown including a white diamond and emerald flower stud earrings, a statement white diamond and emerald pendant necklace, and a statement matching cocktail ring. These jewels in addition to a sleek retro updo, defined eyes, red lips, a black Saint Laurent ‘Kate’ silver monogram tassel detail clutch, and a pair of black Saint Laurent ‘Anouk’ strappy sandals would ensure that Julianne had delivered a major fashion moment on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
