“Welcome to Hollywood! What’s your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don’t; but keep on dreamin’ — this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin’.” These are the iconic lines that open the classic RomCom Pretty Woman. Now the full inspiration behind the Balmain Resort 2020 Collection might have been centered around Parisian style, but there were also a lot of cinematic and pop culture references. Olivier Rousting is never afraid to go big or go home when it comes to his collections. He knows how to dig into the Pierre Balmain couture archives meshing it with the extreme sex appeal that Christophe Decarnin infused into the label with all kinds of pop culture references. The Resort 2021 collection definitely brings out references to Princess Diana, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Clueless, Miami Vice, Pretty Woman, the early days of MTV, Dynasty, Beverly Hills 90210 all tied together in a beautiful ode to Pierre Balmain’s signature ‘Jolie Madame’ style.I definitely see Princess Diana strewn throughout this collection. I definitely could have seen her wearing several of the looks from this collection. “And, as you notice the collection’s hats, ruffles, Vichy patterns and polka-dots, you might recall that my last runway, (shown during a pre-lockdown Paris Fashion Week that now seems a lifetime ago), also played with codes like these—the easily recognized symbols of the upper-class,” Rousting said of this collection. “These are the signatures of a rarefied world of old-families, privileges and wealth that I was made to feel were beyond the reach of someone who looked like me, while I was growing up in Bordeaux.” I think that’s why he is so good at bridging the gap in the best way possible of how to mix references from everything from hip-hop to royalty and never come across as if he is appropriating anything. Everything about this collection screams drama and glamour. Including this black and white gingham ruffled crepe mini dress which I definitely think that Janelle Monae has already put on hold. She loves very referential looks and with this collection I feel like there are so many major moments that Janelle, and many other’s could be drawn to. This dress for Janelle styled with a sleek updo, defined eyes, red lips, a black and white letter writing detailed Balmain envelope clutch found in this collection, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Choca’ platform strappy buckled leather sandals, and a glamorous satin and horsehair modern pill box inspired fascinator from Philip Treacy would definitely keep the referential glamour of this look going from the lookbook to the red carpet for Janelle. Overall Olivier stuck to his translation of French style. “France likes to give lessons in fashion,” he said to VOGUE, choosing his words gingerly. “Its aesthetic is very codified, the icons are always the same, and it doesn’t give any space to this new world we are building. We need to be careful about the world we want to live in. I think we should try to understand who the Parisienne is today. We need to open the doors more.” It lead Tina Issac-Goize to finish her review on VOGUE Runway with the words “Change, he hinted, is on the near horizon. No doubt the world will be watching.” While nothing official has been confirmed from any party if you look at recent Balmain collections it would seem that Olivier has been auditioning for the role of creative director for Chanel. The Resort 2020 collection was no different. You saw incredible use of tweed and suiting which are the signatures of the Chanel codes, which to me really help define Parisienne style. The black and and yellow sequin oversized blazer paired with a gold button embellished bandeau top and black high waisted biker shorts immediately made me think of a similar yellow sequin jacket from Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring 1991 RTW collection that Olivier has referenced before. I have a feeling that after the upcoming couture season and an in person event in Paris celebrating this collection that major news about Olivier taking the reigns at Chanel is imminent. The thought both intrigues me extraordinarily and also gives me deep fears. I don’t want to see Olivier continue to do his version of Karl should that be the case. In a post coming towards the end of next month probably I will put a bunch of the looks from the Resort 2021 Collections into a wish list like I did for the Fall 2020 RTW collections, but that isn’t stopping me from talking about some of my favorite looks in my reviews of collections. The moment I saw this bright yellow square crystal button detailed tiered satin gown I said that Sarah Paulson should be the one to bring it to life. If we have an in person Emmy Awards this year I definitely think that Karla Welch should option this look for Sarah who is highly likely to be nominated for her role in Mrs. America. This gown is MAJOR but I think that Karla’s styling for Lady Paulson would definitely make this look even bigger. A matching bright yellow satin Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ clutch, a pair of nude gold metallic leather Jimmy Choo ‘Dochas’ crystal trimmed ankle strap sandals, and Irene Neuwirth 18-karat rose gold earrings with rose-cut rainbow moonstone and diamond pave that Sarah actually wore to the 2017 Tony Awards would definitely have made this look come together perfectly.
Relic tells the story of an elderly and widowed matriarch named Edna who goes missing, and her daughter and granddaughter who must travel to their remote family home to find her. Soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna. The cast is stellar and I am definitely sad that it won’t have a red carpet premiere. It did premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, but I would have loved one more red carpet premiere. I’m not sure how the film is going to be released just that it is coming soon.Bella Heathcote is always one I love to see on the red carpet. She has been one to consistently bring feminine glamour to the red carpet. I would have loved to see her bring this black silk Chanel Fall 2020 RTW off the shoulder midi dress which features puffy meets fitted long sleeves, an a-line skirt, and an enamel jewel cross embellished defined waist. This was one of the only looks from Virginie Viard’s Fall 2020 RTW collection for the house that I have wanted to see brought to the red carpet. I have been waiting for the perfect person and the perfect red carpet to use it for, be it real or imaginary, but I would definitely think that Bella would be a perfect person to bring the look to life. She has the effortless elegance to make this look really work on the red carpet. A super chic wavy center parted bob, smokey eyes, red lips, a black calfskin and gold tone metal Chanel chain detailed clutch, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘So Kate’ pointed toe pumps, and Bulgari ‘Divas’ Dream’ 18 kt rose gold earrings set with carnelian elements and round brilliant-cut diamonds would definitely have made this movie a major fashion moment.
Now while the collection is new it also is new color ways, prints, textures, and modifications on some of the best sellers that Ulla Johnson has shown in recent years. “There were a lot of conversations about re-rolling best sellers in new fabrications,” Johnson told VOGUE, “but I felt very strongly it was important for me, the team, and our woman that we continue to try to bring something new.” I just don’t see it. While I love this collection it doesn’t feel very new. It seems to remind me of collections we have seen her send down the runway season after season. I would love to see something bold. But what this is is wearable and sell-able. It has appeal to all kinds of women. I will say I LOVED the shoes from this collection. They should totally become a street style staple ASAP. I do think that women would love to wear that. It can be seen that while in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that when Ulla Johnson dropped a new online retail store expecting to sell some hair accessories or sweats “but in truth we were selling runway pieces,” she told VOGUE. We don’t often see Ulla Johnson on the red carpet, but there are two looks I definitely think would be really chic. For the upcoming press tour for No Time To Die I imagine that Naomie Harris will have a couple of more casual appearances I think that this green and yellow ikat print cross draped bodice midi dress which features bow details at the shoulders, a triangle cutout on the sternum, and an a-line ruffled ankle length skirt would be a perfect appearance. I definitely would option it for Naomie to rock on the set of a morning talk show because it has that light effortless vibe especially if styled with loose waves, defined eyes, glossy nude lips, and a pair of silver and gold Malone Souliers ‘Honey’ peep toe d’orsay ankle strap sandals. Another look from Ulla Johnson I think would be perfect for the talk show circuit is this black top stitched puffy sleeve blouse and high waisted trousers with a cummerbund waist. I would love to see Olivia Wilde rock this look for one of the late night shows with wavy bob, defined eyes, nude pink glossy lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Loubi Bee Alta 130’ platform chunky heel sandals, and fun and glamorous MATEO NY 14k gold set white diamond ‘Axis’ hoop earrings. Each look is gorgeous and I think it would work for those more casual fashion appearances.
Today we finish out my 2020 BET Awards wishes with three wishes for three stars with very different and distinct style. Had there been a major red carpet for the BET Awards I know that the three stars in today’s wishes would have definitely bring the drama and glamour to the red carpet. I am hoping that in the coming weeks and months we will start to get back to red carpet events, but until then I will continue to talk about what could have been. So let’s get into it. I love me some Billy Porter. The Queer actor brings the glamour to the red carpet. He takes risks and blurs the lines between menswear and womenswear. I am still imagining myself wearing the white Alex Vinash feathered tuxedo that Billy wore for the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year for my own wedding. So I turned to a designer who loves blurring the lines of gender, sexuality, and race: Prabal Gurung. As I was on the hunt for the perfect look for Billy to wear for the BET Awards I immediately fell in love with this white and black Prabal Gurung Fall 2020 RTW tailored tuxedo which features an asymmetrically color blocked jacket with a gold button detail and a pair of slouchy pintuck straight leg pants. I definitely think this look could be super effortless and majorly glamorous on Billy. It isn’t the big drama filled gowns or coats he tends to favor, but it gives us disco Saturday Night Fever elegance. Now I would want to see Billy really go for it with the styling adding a black Stefano Ricci crystal-tipped silk formal shirt worn with a button or two undone, a black feather embellished Jimmy Choo ‘Celeste’ crystal trimmed clutch, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Night on the Nile’ crystal embellished and velvet loafers, and a DRAMATIC Philip Treacy black and white wide brimmed fedora style hat. It would all make a major moment come to together perfectly. Cynthia Erivo delivered all kinds of major looks over the course of awards season. From big ball gowns or simpler silhouettes done perfectly I was ALWAYS looking forward to seeing what she was going to bring to the red carpet. So I wanted to make sure that I included a major moment for what I would have wanted to see Cynthia bring to life on the red carpet. Enter this red jersey Balenciaga Fall 2020 RTW draped gown which features gloved sleeves as thigh high split, and a sweeping train. I went back and forth on picking this look for Cynthia because I don’t think that she would be able to pull off the look with the matching tight boots that the look was styled with on the runway and I wasn’t sure I would have liked to see the gown without the boots. The more and more I thought about it I think that customizing the gown so it had a bodysuit so there could still be a lot of leg shown and styling the look with her signature bleach blonde shaved hairstyle, defined eyes, deep red glossy lips, a red crystal embellished Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ clutch, a pair of red stretch mesh Balenciaga pointed toe pumps, and statement David Webb geometric hoop ruby and white diamond drop earrings would definitely make this a major moment for Cynthia to bring to life. 16 year old actress Storm Reid has definitely made a name for her self in the world of high fashion. She opened the Miu Miu Fall 2020 RTW show back in March and has rocked red carpets around the world in some of the most coveted fashion brands including Coach, Iris Van Herpen, Viktor & Rolf, Simone Rocha, & Etro. I cannot wait to continue seeing what the future has in store for her. So I would love to see Storm give us cocktail drama wearing this black Balmain Fall 2020 RTW strapless ruffled crepe midi dress which features a cropped bustier bodice with a sweetheart neckline and a tulip shaped skirt. The look is sexy and glamorous yet incredibly age appropriate for Storm, especially with the right styling. A chic fishtail plaited braid, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of black suede Jimmy Choo ‘Anouk’ pointed toe pumps, and a statement Vhernier ‘Calla’ ebony and 18k rose gold link necklace would definitely have made this look a major glam fashion moment for Storm.
The red carpet at the BET Awards isn’t exactly known for it’s high fashion moments. When I Google Image search the event only two of the “top tier” fashion labels show up at the top with a Jean Paul Gaultier Couture dress on Ciara and a Prabal Gurung ensemble on Yara Shahidi, both from the 2019 event. I always hold out hope that someone will WOW me on this red carpet. I’m not saying it hasn’t been done before, but big fashion moments are far and few between. As I’ve said over the past couple of days my wishes for the 2020 BET Awards are picked not with the idea of the Zoom ceremony, but for what the red carpet might have looked like had an in-person actually happened. So definitely escape to what could have happened had COVID-19 not sent the event digital. Beyonce nabbed four BET Award nominations along with her daughter Blue Ivy’s first. Bey doesn’t do a whole lot of red carpets anymore. She opts instead to rock some glam in an at home photo shoot and then sneak into events through the side door. So I mean I would love to see her still do some major glam for the virtual BET Awards since it fits right in with her MO as of lately. I always love seeing Beyonce wearing Elie Saab designs on the red carpet and I definitely think she would have brought this champagne gold intricate sequin embroidered mermaid gown from the Elie Saab Spring 2020 Couture collection which features a plunging neckline with a sheer yoke (that would have to be made to match Bey’s skin tone, long puffy poet sleeves, a leather belted waist, and a sweeping train to life with effortless ease. It isn’t an easy look to pull off, but I definitely believe that Beyonce would be able to push through this dress and own it. A sleek updo, defined eyes, dark rose pink lips, a pair of gold Gianvito Rossi knot detailed ankle strap metallic leather sandals, and dazzling Lorraine Schwartz hand cut diamond cascading earrings would definitely have added the perfect finishing touches to this look. It might have been my subconscious remembering the orange Jean Paul Gaultier Couture dress that Ciara wore last year for the BET Awards, but I picked a very similar dress for her to wear had she walked the red carpet this year. The singer is nominated for one BET Award this year and is very pregnant, so I don’t even know if we would have seen Ciara at this years awards had there been no COVID-19 crisis. But had she shown up draping this lilac Zuhair Murad Fall 2020 RTW one sleeve asymmetrically draped mini dress over her baby bump I definitely think that it would have been a glamorous moment. I would have ditched the belt as I feel over the bump it would have been too constricting. I definitely think that Ciara would have given us sexy pregnancy glamour wearing this dress with the lookbooks matching lilac ankle strap sandals, a romantic curly updo, smokey eyes, soft nude lips, and glamorous Niwika ‘Amane’ cluster earrings set in 18k white gold with blue chalcedony, amethyst, aquamarine, tanzanite, and green tourmaline.I know that Issa Rae has the potential to really wow me. She has, but it has been a while. Had she been on the red carpet at the 2020 BET Awards I would have loved to see her rock this red carpet on top form. I love this goldenrod asymmetrically sequin draped Aliette Fall 2020 RTW pencil dress from her stylist Jason Rembert’s own fashion line. I believe that that Issa would definitely have brought this dress to life in a major moment. She knows how to handle bold color and dazzling glamour on the red carpet and I definitely think that this dress would have delivered just that. The styling with it a sleek braided bun updo, smokey eyes, bold red lips, a pair of yellow gold Sergio Rossi mary-jane inspired peep toe slingback crystal buckle detailed sandals, and Norman Silverman emerald cut white diamond hoop earrings would definitely have put the look together perfectly. Marsai Martin is a little boss lady. She is not only just an actress but at 15 she is already producing movies. I feel like it’s sad that she only received a nomination for Best Young Star because she hustles her way through Hollywood with the best of the “grown-up” stars. I went for something DRAMATIC for her to wear on the red carpet had one taken place with this fuchsia Pamella Rolland Fall 2020 RTW feather-trimmed sequined tulle one shoulder gown which features a fitted one-shoulder bodice, an asymmetric A-line high low skirt, and a dramatic train. Everything from the color to the silhouette to the embellishments makes this a perfect look for Marsai. The dress itself is such a statement that I would just style it with simple waves pinned behind the ears, smokey eyes, light antique rose pink lips, and a pair of silver Alexandre Birman ‘Lacy’ crystal embellished 4 strap snakeskin sandals would definitely have made this another major fashion moment for Marsai to bring to life on the red carpet.
We may not be getting a red carpet for the 2020 BET Awards, but at least there will be a virtually created telecast. We don’t know what the future of awards shows are going to look like. So I am very interested in seeing what this virtual awards event ends up looking like. My wishes are not focused necessarily on what I want to see the stars wear for their Zoom awards show, but more for what I would have wanted to see them bring to life on the red carpet had an in person awards show happened. So check out the five major moments I would have wanted to see brought to life on the red carpet at the 2020 BET Awards. I always LOVE seeing Angela Bassett on the red carpet. She always brings the drama and the glamour. I would have loved to see Angela give us visual glamour wearing this water pattern sequined velvet Tadashi Shoji Fall 2020 RTW gown which features dramatic short ruffled sleeves, a plunging neckline, a bias cut, column skirt, and a short train. I was starting my search for the perfect gown for her Angela to wear had there been a red carpet for this years BET Awards and the moment I saw this gown I was sold. It is different, avant garde, and super glamorous and that is exactly the kind of look that Angela is drawn to for her red carpet gowns. I can definitely imagine her bringing this look to life with a sleek updo, emerald and charcoal smokey eyes, glossy deep nude lips, a gold Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ python leather clutch, gold metallic leather Aquazzura ‘Whisper 105’ strappy sandals, and a pair of simple yet dazzling IVY New York ‘Mistletoe’ tsavorite and diamond drop earrings. For Cardi B I decided to go the couture route which is definitely not the usual route I would go for in regards to the BET Awards red carpet. But this is a fantasy right? So let’s go big or go home right? I was looking at looks and I saw this white Georges Hobeika Spring 2020 Couture asymmetrical tea length dress which features a sheer leaf embroidered bodice, full bell cuffs with fringe, a thin silver bow detail belt, a crystal embellished column skirt with rounded seams and a daring hip high split and was wondering who could rock it for the BET Awards. When I thought of Cardi I was a little apprehensive at the beginning because I wouldn’t want her fake boobs ruining the look like it did with the hot pink Nicholas Jebran gown that she wore for the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party earlier this year. The more I thought about it the more I decided that it was a risk that I would love to see her take. The dress is super glamorous and I think that with the right statement styling I knew that Cardi would have made it a major moment. I would have styled this look with a sleek high ponytail, silver glitter and aqua blue eyes, deep red matte lips, silver crystal embellished talon nails, a pair of silver Le Silla ‘Petalo 120’ ruffled detail ankle strap PVC d’Orsay peep toe sandals, and statement Lorraine Schwartz paraiba tourmaline and white diamond teardrop pendant earrings to make sure that this look screams dramatic glamour from head to toe. I first took notice of H.E.R. a little over a year ago when out of nowhere it she became a fashionista to me when she walked the red carpet at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes to help launch the Giambattista Valli x H&M collection. Before then I hadn’t heard of H.E.R. but I’ve followed her since. She has such an eclectic sense of style. It very much reminds me in a away of Andra Day, but a little more bohemian than retro. I knew immediately the designer I wanted to see H.E.R. wear on the BET Awards red carpet had they happened. I love this sea foam green silk Victoria Hayes Collection Fall 2020 RTW long sleeve robe style midi gown. It is structured yet relaxed and I definitely think it would have been a perfect option for H.E.R. to bring to life on this red carpet especially styled with a bun of curls, defined eyes behind her signature round sunglasses (the ones I picked for her to pair with this dress are Versace), deep berry red lips, a pair of dazzling silver crystal embellished plaid pattern Marco de Vincenzo chunky platform ankle strap sandals, and Norman Silverman white diamond hoop earrings. Lizzo is another one who I’ve been following for just over a year. Now in comparison to H.E.R. I have seen Lizzo turn into a MAJOR fashionista getting custom looks made for her from all of the top fashion labels. However I do love when she turns to one of the first designers to really embrace her, Christopher John Rogers. I was just starting to learn about Christopher John Rogers when Lizzo wore him for the 2019 MTV Movie and Television Awards. It was the first time I really noticed Lizzo and her beat hasn’t slowed since. So when I was looking for looks for her to wear for the BET Awards, had there been a red carpet, I turned first to the Christopher John Rogers Fall 2020 RTW collection and this marigold iridescent gown which features a cutout neckline, long sleeves, and a knot detail. I actually first considered this look for Lizzo to wear on the red carpet at the Met Gala. Ultimately I went for something more dramatic, but the BET Awards would have been a perfect time for Lizzo to bring this look to life on the red carpet. Styled with a high braided bun updo, smokey eyes, burgundy glossy lips, an ombre gold crystal embellished Judith Leiber slim faceted rectangle clutch, a pair of gold Saint Laurent ‘Hall’ metallic leather ankle strap sandals, and statement David Morris ‘Doorknocker’ hammered yellow gold and white diamond earrings I know that this would have been another MAJOR fashion moment for Lizzo. I always love seeing Zendaya bring the glamour to the red carpet. She is a style chameleon and we never know what to expect from her on the red carpet. Now had there been a BET Awards red carpet I have no idea what she would have worn, but I went for much more of a dramatic look than we are used to seeing on the BET Awards red carpet. Initially I was going to pick an Atelier Versace Spring 2020 Couture baroque scarf print cocktail dress for Zendaya, but when I saw this asymmetrically draped gown which features a single cap sleeve, draped detail, thigh high split, and short train. I was sold. I know that Zendaya would definitely have made this look come to life on the red carpet. It would definitely be a risk, but that’s what I love about Zendaya. I would have loved to see her style this gown with the runways strappy knee high sandals, a sleek high ponytail, defined eyes, glossy light pink lips, and a pair of Kwiat white and yellow diamond pear shaped drop earrings.
Check out Part 1 of my 2020 BET Awards wishes here. The virtual BET Awards will take place on Sunday June 28, 2020 at 8pm on BET, BET Her, & CBS.
Due to COVID-19 the 2020 BET Awards have gone virtual and there will be no red carpet. This is the first major awards show that will being going virtual and I will be intrigued to see how the stars that do partake do so. Will there be glam squads and wardrobe? I don’t know. I am running my wishes for this years red carpet based on the nominees and some of the confirmed performers and guests of this years event, but wishing as though the event was going to have a big red carpet. I’m doing so because I don’t expect that we will see big fashion moments from this event virtually, but I still want to escape to what could have been had the red carpet actually taken place. Alicia Keys is nominated for the BET HER Award and will also be a performer on the virtual telecast. I have always been intrigued by Alicia’s sense of style. It is very conservative but with some flare. Had she walked the red carpet this year I would have loved to see Alicia rock the red carpet wearing this plum Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2020 jumpsuit which features long sleeves, a dramatic cape, sash belted waist, keyhole cutout, and wide legs. The look is modern and sleek yet very much disco inspired. I feel like this is definitely a look that Alicia would be drawn to. Sleek yet surprising and the color is EVERYTHING. A braided updo, defined eyes, deep burgundy lips, a pair of gold metallic leather Aquazzura ‘Gardena 120’ platform strappy sandals, and statement MATEO New York 14k gold pearl and white diamond crescent moon chandelier earrings all would definitely have made this a major red carpet moment for Alicia. Chloe x Halle just dropped an amazing new album and I am super disappointed we won’t get to see them making the rounds on the red carpets performing at different awards shows to promote it. They are nominated for Best Group at this years BET Awards and are slated to perform during the virtual ceremony. I always love seeing this this sister duo bring the fashion to the red carpet. They always wear the perfect complimentary looks from some of the best design houses out there. I was looking for the perfect look for Alicia Keys to wear from Oscar de la Renta actually when I saw these two looks that I thought were perfect for the sister duo. I honestly don’t think we’ve ever seen Oscar de la Renta at the BET Awards, but I love the idea of Chloe x Halle bringing the sophisticated glam to this red carpet in these two uber glamorous moments from the Oscar de la Renta Fall 2020 RTW collection. For Chloe Bailey, the taller of the sisters, I went with this hot pink cotton-bled moire draped peplum strapless bustier top and black high rise straight leg wool-blend trousers. The look is definitely a cool take on the classic Oscar de la Renta glamour and I think that with a bun of braids, defined eyes, glossy nude lips, a hot pink L’Afshar ‘Ida’ croc leather top handle evening bag, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Follies’ floral arabesque beaded mesh pointed toe pumps, and a selection of Butani jewels including a pair of white diamond teardrop waterfall earrings and a geometric white diamond ‘Constellation’ choker necklace would definitely have make this look head to toe perfection. Now for Chloe Bailey I went for more of a dramatic take on the classic LBD opting for this black faux one shoulder asymmetric origami draped voluminous cocktail dress. The dress is one of my favorites from the Fall 2020 RTW collections and I definitely think that Halle would be able to sell it to me with ease especially styled with a high ponytail of braids, smokey eyes, glossy nude lips, a pair of hot pink Christian Louboutin ‘Galativi’ pointed toe suede and mesh paneled pumps, and statement Butani white diamond three strand diamond garland hoop drop earrings. Jennifer Hudson has been missing from the red carpet since the Cats premiere in December. I think the fact the movie bombed had a lot to do with why we didn’t see Jennifer on the red carpets over the course of awards season. So I was excited to see that her name is on the list of performers for the 2020 BET Awards. I would have really loved it had there been a red carpet for her to walk. I picked a look for Jennifer that I really wanted to see her wearing had there been a red carpet, but also I think that this red sequin Markarian pajama style suit with a gold crystal embellished chain belt would be a great look for her to rock for the video call performance for this years virtually shot awards show. It’s easy and effortless but with a whole lot of pizazz and glamour. That is what I think Jennifer’s style has become. This look is really cool and it would have definitely been a major BET Awards red carpet moment. Style it with a sleek side parted bob, thick defined eyes, dark red glossy lips, a pair of classic red patent leather Christian Louboutin ‘So Kate 120’ pointed toe pumps, and simple sparkle via rose gold set Kwiat Ashoka bezel set white diamond drop earrings and I know that Jennifer would have shut the red carpet down. Megan Thee Stallion has become a style star whom I never expected to love. A year ago I knew who she was, but not about her style. Since then we’ve seen her rock looks from Coach, Versace, and more. She gives bold color and high glamour when she steps out on the red carpet. I decided for the BET Awards where Megan is nominated for FIVE awards and also will be a performer that I wanted to go for uber sexy glamour. So I picked this black sequined Sergio Hudson long sleeve fitted cocktail dress which features small puffy shoulders, a plunging neckline, and a daring thigh high split. I knew I wanted to include Sergio Hudson in these wishes and the moment I saw this dress I knew it was PERFECT for Megan Thee Stallion. I also knew immediately how I wanted to see it styled. Glamorous old Hollywood waves worn over one shoulder, thick winged smokey eyes, bold matte red lips, the MAJOR black Christian Louboutin ‘Zoom’ fishnet tights peep toe boots, a black three tier fox fur stole with tails, and some dazzling Lorraine Schwartz jewels including a pair of geometric white diamond and black jade drop earrings and a statement white diamond and emerald shard cocktail ring were exactly how I think Megan would tie this look together to ensure she would have been the definition of sexy glamour from head to toe. The final look for today is for the always gorgeous and risk taking Tracee Ellis Ross whom is nominated at the 2020 BET Awards for Best Actress. I love me some Tracee Ellis Ross in Black-ish and The High Note. She is definitely one of my favorite actresses and is definitely one of the best style stars out there. So I really wanted to go out there in my wish for what I would have wanted to see her wear on the red carpet at the BET Awards. VOGUE Runway has been celebrating the appointment of Givenchy’s new creative director and the lead up to couture by posting archival collections from the label. They started with the Givenchy Fall 1995 Couture collection which was Hubert de Givenchy’s final collection at the helm of the label he created and that bears his name. As I was flipping through the looks having been obsessed with archival runway shows for several months now I saw this red sequin fringe column gown which features long sleeves and a plunging neckline and I knew immediately it was going to be a perfect wish for Tracee. So when I was looking at what to do for Tracee for the BET Awards I knew this would have been perfect. I definitely can imagine Tracee making this this such a dazzling moment especially if styled with big teased center parted curls, defined smokey eyes, nude glossy lips, a red Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ metal faceted clutch, a pair of red Aquazzura ‘Tequila’ crystal embellished leather strappy ankle strap sandals, and a selection of major IVY New York jewels including statement white diamond stitched drop earrings and a major red spinel and white diamond cocktail ring.
The virtual BET Awards will take place on Sunday June 28, 2020 at 8pm on BET, BET Her, & CBS.
In the heady days and long nights of 1930s London, the bright young things are the talk of the town. They have innate style, but they are fearless individuals with powerful personalities too. These were characters that dressed to impress their peers and express themselves, and it is this duality that is captured in the collection. Lightness is balanced with strength, sweeping volumes are grounded with particular textiles, sharp and jaunty tailoring is softened with prints. Across the collection there is a mood of delicate defiance – an old order disrupted by something new. “She was an anti-fascist who fought against racism…a journalist, poet, muse; completely ahead of her time.” Erdem Moralioglu said of Nancy Cunard, the heiress to the cruise line, whose portrait he came across with Robin Muir at the “Cecil Beaton: Bright Young Things” exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. It was Nancy who served as the British designer’s inspiration for Pre-Fall 2020 collection. The collection was easily identifiable as an Erdem collection. The designer is always delivering us the best florals and prints taking silhouette inspiration mostly from the early 20th Century. The Pre-Fall 2020 collection was no different. It showed us once again that Erdem is a master of cut and silhouette. Everything in this collection was lovely. Feminine, glamorous, and strong. Glamour matched with eccentricity; style and opinion, grace, wit and grit, in equal measure. Until recently her nobility defined her identity, but now she is defined by her principles and not just her privilege. She might be dressed for a portrait, but she is here to be heard, and not just seen. I feel like it is only appropriate that this collection inspired by such a pioneering woman came to life right now. I did a little digging into who Nancy Cunard was after reading that she was the inspiration behind the collection. In my research I was able to find that she opposed the rise of fascism and support the work of black artists and writers by using her white and financial privileges. While the clothes are not hers the fact she is the inspiration behind the collection mean that the women who will bring the looks from this collection to life on the red carpet and in real life have a major legacy to live up to. Three women who champion causes of those less fortunate than them, and I hope for racial justice, I would love to see bring looks from this collection to life include Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Keira Knightley, & Cate Blanchett. I would love to see Catherine wearing the red, white, and blue long sleeve 1930’s bias cut long poet sleeve midi dress with a red bow belted waist, which is available for purchase from the designer’s online store now. It would be a super chic and feminine moment for the royal to bring to life with her signature waves, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a red Jimmy Choo ‘Varenne’ croc-embossed clutch, and a pair of red Jimmy Choo ‘Romy 85’ pointed toe pumps. For Keira I went to a more turn of the century inspired look with this sequin embellished avocado green puffy cap sleeve tiered gown. The gown definitely speaks directly to Keira’s very romantic sense of style and I can definitely imagine her bringing the look to life on the red carpet with a romantic updo, smokey eyes, antique rose pink lips, and a pair of antique gold Aquazzura ‘So Nude’ slingback metallic leather sandals. From the row of looks above the third look is PERFECT for Cate Blanchett. In a recent review of the Chanel Cruise 2021 collection I saw a more casual look from the collection that was perfect for Cate to wear during her day to day duties as the president of the jury at the Venice Film Festival later this year. I would say the exact same about this pale yellow, black, and robins egg blue floral print midi length shift dress with poet sleeves. At this rate I will have created a whole wardrobe for Cate to wear in Venice just based on my runway reviews. I would definitely love to see her snapped riding one of the classic wood lined water taxi’s in Venice wearing this dress styled with a romantic casual updo, defined eyes, a powder blue leather Marni top handle with a red leather line detail down the center, a pair of cream and grey Manolo Blahnik ‘Carolyn’ snakeskin pointed toe low heel slingback pumps, and light blue Chanel round frame chain detailed sunglasses. The brand has been a favorite of everyone from red carpet royalty to real royalty to editorial royalty. Everyone loves them some Erdem. I honestly am disappointed that the Met Gala was cancelled because I always look forward to the major custom gowns he sends up the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are several brands out there right now who are doing this voluminous puffy sleeve, peplum top with an a-line midi skirt look like you can see above and I am starting to feel fatigued by the style, but there was something about this lilac rose print silk brocade ensemble that I was drawn to. Then I imagined it on Lucy Boynton with a loose romantic updo, purple smokey eyes, punchy pink lips, a pair of vibrant purple velvet Prada chunky heel platform sandals with a crystal embellished buckle, and a pair of glamorous yet quirky lavender Anabela Chan ‘Bloom’ bejeweled titanium sculpted earrings and I was sold even further. My favorite look in the collection was the 60’s inspired lavender silk moire sleeveless sack gown which features a velvet ribbon tied at the neck and black floral embroidery. I was enamored with the gown the moment I saw it and definitely think that the statuesque Gemma Chan would definitely be the perfect person to bring the look to life on the red carpet. The gown itself is such a statement that I think with a sleek side parted updo, defined eyes, antique rose pink lips, a pair of lavender metallic leather Tabitha Simmons ‘JAZZ’ strappy sandals, and statement vintage white diamond and amethyst art deco inspired Cartier High Jewelry floral earclips that Gemma would ensure the look is feminine glamour defined.
Irresistible is an upcoming political comedy start Steve Carell, Chris Cooper, & Rose Byrne. A Democratic political strategist works the campaign for a retired veteran’s bid for mayor of a small right-wing Wisconsin town. After the Democratic National Committee’s top strategist Gary (Steve Carell) sees a video of a retired Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) standing up for the rights of his town’s undocumented workers, Gary believes he has found the key to winning back the Heartland. However, the Republican National Committee counters him by sending in his brilliant nemesis Faith (Rose Byrne) and a local race quickly becomes a fight for the soul of America. The film is slated to be released on demand on June 26, 2020 after being delayed from it’s original May 29, 2020 theatrical release date due to COVID-19. I will say I am a little disappointed that there won’t be a red carpet premiere for this movie because with the cast there was potential for some super chic moments. Rose Byrne is always one of my favorites to see on the red carpet. Earlier this year she wore a strawberry pink Alexis Mabille couture tuxedo inspired gown for the premiere of Like A Boss, but over did it with the emerald green top handle bag and the bow detail Roger Vivier sandals. For this premiere I really wanted to go with a chic turn on business glam picking this stone grey Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 RTW collection ensemble which features a silk long sleeve button down, a wide belt on the natural waist, a pair of straight leg pleated wool pants, and a second belt on the hips. I have been loving this look since it was first sent down the runway. I loved the use of two belts. It makes this look very intriguing. It was a cool look and would definitely take a cool girl to make this look come to life. I definitely think that Rose would have been the right cool girl to bring this look together. Now it would need the right styling including a sleek center parted bob, defined eyes, dark antique rose pink lips, a grey crystal embellished Le Silla ‘Borsa’ clutch, a pair of statement making electric blue Saint Laurent ‘Zoe’ pointed toe snakeskin pumps, and simple yet glamorous Anabela Chan ‘Comet’ intricately hand-set with two dazzling 4 carats laboratory-grown synthesised and simulated kasmir blue sapphires, pavé-set with 56 white diamonds to really bring the business glam to the red carpet for Rose. Mackenzie Davis has been one of my favorite stars to watch grow. She hasn’t had a huge leading lady yet, but she has the potential to be a major force on the red carpet. I saw this celadon green silk charmuse Prabal Gurung Fall 2020 RTW dress which features asymmetric long sleeves, a crystal collar, loose fit bodice, crystal button details, draped skirt, broach detail, and a mid calf length and immediately thought it was perfect look for Mackenzie. It was definitely something I believe that Mackenzie would have rocked this look with effortless ease for this premiere. With a loose bob, defined eyes, soft pink lips, white Aquazzura ‘Disco’ crystal embellished chunky heel platform strappy leather sandals, and a pair of Norman Silverman emerald cut white diamond stud earrings surrounded by a halo of white diamonds this look would have been put together perfectly for this premiere. Rounding out this set of wishes is the always beautiful Natasha Lyone. I love her quirky sense of style. It walks the line between masculine and feminine quite well. I was originally looking at Peter Do for Rose, but when I was looking at this black liquid sequin ensemble from the designer Fall 2020 RTW collection which includes a blazer, button down shirt, and a pleated ankle length skirt. There are also a pair of slashed trousers worn under the skirt, but I was thinking of dropping the pants for this look. I think that all on it’s own that without them the look would work just right for Natasha especially styled with her signature red hair in big curls, smokey eyes, red lips, a black Edie Parker ‘Wonderstone’ marbled acrylic clutch, a pair of black Gucci ‘Madea’ art deco meets 70’s inspired patent leather peep toe platform chunky heel sandals, and statement white diamond Yeprem ‘Y-Couture’ wing drop earrings.
Self-Portrait just released the images of its Pre-Fall 2020 collection, these collections are usually show between November and January leading up to the Fall Ready-to-Wear collections presented during the big fashion weeks. Some designers have started doing this using the Pre-Fall collections as a preview for buyers. That seems to be the case with Self-Portrait, but to be completely honest this collection was better than the Fall 2020 RTW collection. Many of the items from this collection are now able to be shopped on self-portrait-studio.com. The clothes in this collection are super wearable and are the perfect pieces to refresh your quarantine summer style now. As the Self-Portrait website says “Summer is a season that goes beyond everyday, it’s the season of surprises and spontaneity. Separates ready for living in the moment, and dresses ready to make every moment. Powerful, yet uncomplicated, each piece is a delight to wear, and for others to behold.”The collection is incredibly wearable all on it’s own. I’ve always felt like Self-Portrait is a brand of clothes women want to wear. I asked Ellese Launer of the blog Rock. Paper. Glam. about why she loves Self-Portrait. She told me “I love how soft the fabrics are paired with often harsh lines, creating a unique balance of feminine and masculine.” All of these are reasons why I love seeing Self-Portrait designs on the red carpet. There were two looks specifically from this collection I would love to see on the red carpet. The first is the dark green polka dotted long sleeve midi dress which features an asymmetrical neckline and a subtle cutout, which is available for purchase now, would be a major look for Naomie Harris to put on her rack this fall to wear while promoting No Time To Die. Now the dress is the perfect meshing of casual and cocktail so I would have Naomie style it with a sleek center parted hairstyle tucked behind the ears, smokey eyes, deep red lips, a pair of black chunky heel Miu Miu crystal embellished platform sandals, and statement white gold set Fernando Jorge ‘Disco’ white diamond drop earrings. The other look I really want to see on the red carpet is the sheer grey sequin slip style gown. Honestly that was the first look from the collection I was drawn to. It is sexy and glamorous which is right up Vanessa Hudgens ally and I feel she would definitely make the look come to life especially if styled with loose waves worn over one shoulder, smokey eyes, matte nude lips, a grey snakeskin print Judith Leiber Couture ‘Soho Argent’ clutch, a pair of silvery grey Rene Caovilla bow detailed crystal embellished cross strap sandals, and a selection of MAJOR Atelier Swarovski jewels including white and grey crystal asymmetric ‘Slivershade by Tabitha Simmons’ drop earrings, a white and green crystal detail ‘Botanical Jewels by Penelope Cruz’ statement ring, and a white crystal ‘Moonsun’ stacked ring.
