Tanya Taylor Resort 2021: A Pop of Color in the Darkest Hour

Amid the COVID-19 shut down creation of Resort 2021 collections have been quite difficult for brands, but not for Tanya Taylor. She told WWD that that the collection was far into the creative process by the time the shutdowns started going into effect “It’s not big, it’s definitely downsized,” she said of the promised business that had already committed to carrying the collection, noting that it was secured in part by moving the Pre-Fall Collection to a December delivery instead of its usual delivery time in August or September. To share the collection instead of putting together a lookbook shoot and hiring a stylist she called upon some of her friends. She shipped them pieces from the collections, had them style them with items in their clients, and shooting the lookbook via self-timed cameras. Taylor told Vogue Runway: “I prefer seeing what they do with our clothes and how they add their own personal twist. That’s where the look book came to life. It felt like these women were telling us how they want to feel in their clothes.”The collection was definitely VERY colorful. I adore this collection. It is very fun but very wearable. I can definitely see why they had agreements with some major retailers to buy the collection early on. Overall it is the extreme optimism that we see time and time again from Tanya Taylor collections. It is something that right now I feel like we really need. Fashion is a great form of escapism. I’ve been using it as a coping mechanism for not being able, or wanting, to go out of the house. “We started thinking about the joy of getting dressed up,” Taylor said to WWD. She also told them that she found inspiration in women who through the pandemic have shown online “how they were still getting dressed at home, being creative, creating joyful content.” I definitely understand this. I might be writing this review laying in bed right now wearing a paint stained t-shirt and raggedy basketball shorts, but I do personally like dressing up every day for my day to day work and for ZOOM cocktail parties. The pieces in this collection would be a great addition to anyone’s video board room or party wardrobes. Now it wouldn’t be an If I Was A Stylist review if I didn’t break down some of my favorite looks I would like to see on the red carpet. I saw this red and pink pleated and ruffled lamé one shoulder cocktail dress with a thin gold belt. Now I will say I IMMEDIATELY called this look out for being almost an exact copy of an Altuzarra Fall 2019 RTW dress, but I still really love this look. The color gives a different vibe and evokes a very different girl. From the moment I saw the dress I couldn’t shake the idea of Tika Sumpter wearing this dress. It would be a really fun look if she has to make a late show appearance and wanted to do full glam. If it was for a live red carpet though I would style this look with a sleek top knot updo, defined eyes, glossy nude lips, a statement red Rosantica ‘Ghizlan’ velvet and feather minaudiere with gold ring handles and crystal embellishments, a pair of metallic red leather Gucci knotted ankle strap sandals, and another statement via IVY New York rubellite and diamond pendant drop earrings. The other look from the collection I thought would be a really chic red carpet look was this black and light pink polka dot ensemble which features a strapless peplum top and a pair of high waisted cropped straight leg pants. It could be perfect for someone like Zoey Deutch, especially if we were in a normal world right now and she was making the rounds promoting the recently released Season 2 of The Politician. This look would have been fun for the talk show circuit and would have been super chic snapped on the NYC sidewalks snapped styled with a sleek center parted bob tucked behind the ears, defined eyes, bright pink lips, a desert rose pink glitter leather Salvatore Ferragamo ‘Small Boxyz’ top handle bag, a pair of multi-tone pink crystal embellished Jimmy Choo ‘Love 100’ pointed toe pumps, and delicate Monica Vinader ‘Siren’ rose gold set rose quartz chandelier earrings.
