2020 Deauville American Film Festival Red Carpet Wish List Part 1

The Deauville American Film Festival will go ahead with an in person edition this year. I am so thankful for this as I am craving red carpets. I am not sure show this festival will work as American’s are not currently allowed in Europe because of COVID-19 travel restrictions. So I am just praying that the stars in Europe are going to be bringing their a-game. This years Deauville American Film Festival is going to be presided over by Vanessa Paradis as this years jury president. While I do love Vanessa’s very bohemian meets rock and roll meets glam sense of style I don’t usually think of her as someone who will bring Best Dressed of the Year worthy fashion moments. With that in mind I went runway shopping for her. She is the face of Chanel, so of course this list is dominated by looks from Chanel for her to rock on the festivals red carpets. But I also included a look that the moment I saw it spoke to me as a perfect look for Vanessa. I’ve picked five superb moments for Vanessa to wear over the course of the festival. The list isn’t necessarily in any particular order, but for the festivals opening ceremony I really want to see Vanessa wearing this black gown from the Chanel Fall 2019 Couture collection which features an embellished halter bodice layered over with a tulle feather detailed cape and a ruched fit to flare skirt. The gown is definitely right in line with her sense of style and just glamorous enough for the film festival. I would definitely love this gown on Vanessa styled with a romantic updo, thick defined eyes, bold red lips, a black lambskin Chanel quilted chain embellished clutch, a pair of black grosgrain and satin Chanel bow detailed ankle strap pointed toe d’orsay pumps, and a bit more dazzle via Chanel Haute Jewelry ‘Secrets Dorients’ collection white diamond and pearl chandelier earrings.

Look two I would love to see Vanessa wearing is this major burgundy suit embroidered with rich colors in sequin embroidery also from the Fall 2019 Couture collection. Vanessa doesn’t often wear floor length gowns for the red carpet. They are usually cocktail, midi, or tea length dresses. Suiting isn’t exactly something we’ve seen Vanessa wear for formal red carpets, but this look would be perfect for Deauville which has a more relaxed vibe than we see at other film festivals. Chic center parted waves, defined eyes, dark antique rose pink lips, a black Chanel quilted clutch with a gold pearl detailed CC logo, and a pair of black suede Chanel three strap tied sandals with antique gold piping would definitely make this a major moment for her to wear on this festival red carpet. Now if you haven’t been a regular reader you wouldn’t know that that this year I have been having a love affair with using archive Chanel looks for wishes. Virginie Viard has been trying her damnedest to be Karl Lagerfeld, but it’s failing. So why not just turn to the masters creations instead? I love the romantic vibe of this white ruffled gown from the Chanel Spring 1996 Couture collection which features a round neckline, gold belt on the natural waist, a drop waist, and a tired skirt and I definitely think that she would look ever so lovely wearing this gown. It isn’t overly fussy but fits the bohemian side of her sense of style. I imagine this gown would be super glam with a loose romantic updo, defined eyes, soft blush pink lips, a pair of white lace and nude tulle Jimmy Choo ‘Romy 100’ pointed toe pumps, and a statement Chanel High Jewelry ‘Tweed de Chanel’ imperial topaz, 18k gold, white diamond, and pearl tweed inspired collar necklace.

Wish number 4 for Vanessa to bring to life on the red carpet in Deauville is my final Chanel pick. I don’t exactly love this blush pink peasant inspired Chanel Spring 2020 Couture tea length gown which features a sheer yoke, embellished lace ruffle, belted waist, and an a-line skirt, but thinking about Vanessa wearing this dress I feel like her inherent rock and roll and bohemian vibe would make this very prim and feminine dress. Now I want to see Vanessa really go for it with the styling adding loose romantic updo, defined eyes, bright pink lips, a and pair of baby pink satin Roger Vivier ‘Rv Brochamour’ low heel crystal buckle detailed pointed toe pumps.

The final look in my wishes for Vanessa is the wild card. Back in 2016 Elie Saab was the only designer whom Vanessa wore that wasn’t Chanel during her time as a jury member in Cannes. It was honestly one of her best red carpet looks ever. So when I looked at Elie Saab just to see what could be options and I saw this white suit from his Fall 2020 RTW collection which features a cropped gold button double breasted jacket with black satin lapels embellished with pailettes and beads, a white silk blouse with a plunging neckline, and high waisted wide leg trousers I saw it as a major moment. It would be a great look for her to bring something that isn’t a skirt to the red carpet in Deauville. Now styling this look with chic center parted waves, defined eyes, bold red lips, and black suede Chanel pointed toe cut out ankle boots.

The 2020 Deauville American Film Festival will open on September 4, 2020 and run through September 14, 2020.

Jacquemus Spring 2021: A Field of Over Hyped Wheat

In the midst of a global pandemic Simon Porte Jacquemus decided to move forward with a full in person fashion show, complete with guests. It was among the first (we also recently saw Etro and Dolce & Gabbana have in person shows) live fashion shows we have seen since the start of the global Coronavirus quarantine in March. WWD talked to Simon about his decision to have an in person event. “It’s not negotiable,” he said. “It’s at the heart of the strategy for a house like mine.…It’s a special moment, an emotion you transmit.” I don’t agree with his choice to have an in person event, but it did seem very much slimmed down in terms of guests. Now that being said I would have never made the trip to see this collection walk a runway. I feel like in terms of creativity, construction, and idea Jacquemus falls super short. This is a brand all about the hype. It is all about the Insta models and living a lifestyle that flaunts excess and rewards mediocrity. The collection might have been dubbed “L’Amour” but there really wasn’t much to love. Yes the collection did feature some good pieces the majority of the 55 mixed women’s and men’s looks there weren’t many I really enjoyed. It was really about 8 full looks, and a couple of other pieces from others. The best thing about the presentation was the location. A wheat filed culled perfectly in the French Vexin Regional Natural Park he laid over 600 meters of wood planking to create an picturesque location. Now if only the clothes lived up to the drama of the location. Reading Harper’s Bazaar (a magazine institution I truly respect) say of this collection “It was seductive, a bit melancholy, and incredibly romantic” and VOGUE calling it “a masterstroke” just make me roll my eyes so far back into my head it feels like they will make a full circle. There were 100 guests in attendance at the show including Maisie Williams, Jeanne Damas and Isabelle Adjani. I’m sure all were looking for their next red carpet look, whenever that may come about. Now while I have ripped this collection to shreds so far there was ONE look that really spoke to me. This white linen gown which features square neck, thin straps at shoulder and bodice, a drop waist, and a voluminous tiered hem was actually a masterwork in simplistic elegance. Linen isn’t a fabrication I associate with evening-wear, but this gown definitely makes it work. This look is a perfect canvas for building a major fashion moment. I saw this look and thought immediately of Laura Harrier. I can picture her making this look come to life with a bun of braids, smokey eyes, deep burgundy matte lips, a pair of white Rene Caovilla teardrop crystal fringe trimmed two strap mule sandals, and a statement multi-colored fancy stone and white diamond Bulgari ‘Barocko’ collection collar necklace. Styled just like that this linen gown would fit right in on a major red carpet like the Emmy Awards alongside the silks, chiffons, and satins. All in all I am just over Jacquemus as a brand, but I get he sells a lifestyle that appeals to those with high disposable income. I will never be that rich, and even if I were there are other brands out there that do this idea much better. It is all about the social media for Jacquemus and this presentation shows he knows how to do it extremely well. If you want to see the whole collection you can do so by watching the show below.

Fall 2020 Couture Round Up Red Carpet Wish List

Couture this season was VERY different. We saw designers tackle moving presentation digitally in vastly different ways. Dior did a short video editorial and showcased petite mains work on miniatures. Hobeika recorded a show without an audience from his home in Lebanon. Ralph & Russo showed a mix of in person shot lookbook, a digital spokesmodel, and sketches. And most showed smaller paired down collections shot in lookbooks. I would love to see many of these looks on the red carpet so I am hoping that we start seeing red carpets return soon. Two seasons worth of looks are already headed to the archives without being worn. So check out the 61 wishes below I would love to see brought to life on the red carpet from the Fall 2020 Couture collections.

2020 BAFTA Television Awards Red Carpet Wish List

The 2020 BAFTA TV Awards were just one on many big events to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the ceremony having originally been scheduled for Spring before the postponement was announced in March. Well on Friday we will FINALLY get this event, but it is going to look a little different. Instead the ceremony will take place in a closed studio, with Richard Ayoade presenting and the winners accepting their prizes virtually. It is the first time the awards have ever been presented behind closed doors, with the nominees invited to get involved through a combination of video link-ups and pre-recorded acceptance speeches. While I am craving a red carpet event we aren’t going to get it from the BAFTA TV Awards. When the studio event was announced I was hoping that BAFTA would be inviting winners to accept their awards in person, but alas it will be a series of live Zoom calls and pre-recorded speeches. So the four wishes below are still just a bit of fantasy. Are your ready to escape the realities of the pandemic with me?Up first is the eccentric beauty Helena Bonham Carter who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in The Crown. I adore her quirky glam sense of style. She goes to some of those labels with a punk spirit with a retro glam twist. So it was an easy choice for me to pick this black and red heart brocade Alexander McQueen Fall 2020 RTW sleeveless a-line midi dress which features a horse hair crinoline for it to be her red carpet look for the BAFTA TV Awards. Helena doesn’t wear full length gowns often, almost never to be honest, so this look definitely brings her quirky sense of style to life perfectly. Her signature unkempt but glamorous updo, thick defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of black satin Roger Vivier strappy crystal embellished buckle platform sandals, and an antique Victorian diamond cluster necklace from UK based vintage jewelry dealer Jewellery Discovery would definitely have made this a MAJOR fashion moment for Helena.  Last years Best Actress winner Jodie Comer has already been confirmed that she will be a part of the virtual “pre-show” event that will take the place of a red carpet. The Killing Eve star is nominated once again for her role in the hit series of Villanelle and I am really disappointed we aren’t going to see her on the red carpet. She has been rocking looks from major coveted brands like Stella McCartney, Prabal Gurung, Tom Ford, and Mary Katrantzou so had she actually been stepping onto the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet this year I definitely would have wanted to see her continue to expand her designer repertoire wearing this major black dot sequin Valentino Resort 2021 strapless gown which features a bustier bodice and sheer skirt. I wasn’t a huge fan of this collection, but this gown is MAJOR. It is glamour and sex meshed together and I really do believe that Jodie would have been able to sell it to me with effortless ease especially if styled with a sleek center parted hairstyle tucked behind the ears, defined eyes, bold red lips, a black Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ serpet ball clasp clutch, simple black Jimmy Choo ‘Metz 100’ strappy sandals, and a pair of David Morris white diamond feather drop earrings. Naomi Ackie is gorgeous. This is the first time I am featuring her, but she already had a major repertoire of designers under her belt. For the BAFTA film awards earlier this year she rocked chartreuse Valentino. It was an unexpected choice, but one that I loved. We’ve also already seen Naomi rock the red carpet wearing Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney as well as front row at Schiaparelli Couture. So when I saw her name in the nominees list for the 2020 BAFTA Television Awards I was upset that we are going to rob us oh another major fashion moment from Naomi. So far we’ve only seen her wear British designers on the red carpet, so going to this salmon pink Brandon Maxwell Fall 2020 RTW silk chiffon gown which features a pussy bow tied at the mock neck, a dramatic cape, and a flowing silhouette is definitely more of a wish than picking a safe British designer. I feel like this color on Naomi would have been PHENOMENAL. The gown on it’s own brings the drama so to make sure the look is perfection defined from head to toe I would have styled it with a braided updo, defined eyes, deep berry red glossy lips, a pair of gold Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Casati’ pearl embellished snakeskin embossed metallic leather platform ankle strap sandals, and simple Cartier ‘Cactus de Cartier’ 18k yellow gold drop earrings. Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller Bridge is defending her sweep of the 2019 Emmy’s, and all of the 2020 awards hoping to take home the Best Female Comedy Performance and Best Scripted Comedy at this years BAFTA Television Awards. I have been a slow burn to being a fan of Phoebe’s style. I still haven’t been WOWED by her. That would all have changed had she stepped onto the red carpet wearing this Givenchy Fall 2020 RTW ensemble which features a blouson sleeveless royal blue top with a plunging v-neck and thin belted waist as well as a MAJOR pink and blue ombre feather a-line skirt. I have been in love with this gown since it first walked the runway and I know that it would be a major moment for whomever snatched it up. It is definitely more avant garde than we are used to seeing from Phoebe, but I think that getting her out of her comfort zone and into something more dramatic would definitely finally make me lover her red carpet moment. A sleek updo, defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of black Gianvito Rossi ‘Estelle’ PVC paneled strappy sandals, and simple sparkle via Cartier white diamond and sapphire teardrop pendant drop earrings would definitely have put this look together perfectly.

The virtual 2020 BAFTA TV Awards will take place on Friday July 31, 2020.

Prada Resort 2021 & Spring 2021 Menswear: Reflections On The Past

Over the summer we have seen a lot of headlines about how COVID-19 has robbed the fashion industry of debuts, but personally I think it is sadder that it robbed us of Miuccia Prada’s final collection as the solo creative director at her namesake label. In September she will be sharing the spotlight with new co-creative director Raf Simons. As per usual Miuccia combined her spring menswear show with her resort collection. The presentation was titled “Multiple Views: The Show That Never Happened.” For the Prada Spring/Summer 2021, a singular statement is replaced by the perspectives of many: multiple views, by a multitude of global creatives. The collection suggests the approach: different views, for a collection that proposes a myriad interpretations of the Prada man and woman. Congruent yet individually delineated, the collection is proposed in five chapters, which in turn are interpreted by five image-makers and artists. Terence Nance, Joanna Piotrowska, Martine Syms, Juergen Teller, and Willy Vanderperre each propose a film capturing a facet of the Prada collection, distinct and definite in its creative statement and ideology, a point of view on Prada.“I think that our job as fashion designers is to create clothes for people, that is the honesty of it. That is really the value of our job — to create beautiful, intelligent clothes. This season, we focused on that idea: it is about clothes, about giving value to pieces,” Prada said. “The clothes are simple — but with the concept of simplicity as an antidote to useless complication. This is a moment that requires some seriousness, a moment to think and to reflect on things. What do we do, what is fashion for, what are we here for? What can fashion contribute, to a community?” We did see one of the simplest Prada collections in quite some time. It hearkened back to the 90’s. Full of nylon, crisp cotton, thick knits with just a sprinkling of floral pattern or texture from lace. It was all very utilitarian, which is a signature in the DNA of the Prada clientele. As we have seen from many designers in the midst of the pandemic Miuccia looked inward and for her final collection as the solo creative she looked back and updated looks she presented as her first in 1988. This collection is timeless and will easily be one of the most collectable collections that she has presented. It is extremely wearable and sellable. I am sure we will see stars fighting to snatch some of these looks up to bring them to the red carpet. Below you are going to find several of my initial wishes to see Hollywood embrace the Prada minimalism on the red carpet.

In his review of the collection for Vogue Runway Luke Leitch wrote “Simplicity can be complicated and complication can be simple.” This statement is perfectly true. Every look in this collection was super simple but executed perfectly. In my in depth research I have definitely seen that looks that seem to be the simplest are in fact the most complicated, especially when you see minimal seaming or seams that are barely visible. I commend that in quarantine that Miuccia and her fabulous ateliers at Prada were able to perfectly execute this collection.

Giambattista Valli Fall 2020 Couture Wish List

As I said in my review of the Giambattista Valli Fall 2020 Couture collection there were a lot of signature styles for the label encompassed in the looks presented. It was froth, drama, and glamour from the first look to the final. When it comes to the red carpet for major events like film festivals and major awards red carpets we do tend to see Giambattista Valli Couture ensembles on the red carpet and as it does seem there will be some sort of in person events for the Venice Film Festival, VMAs, Toronto Film Festival, and the Primetime Emmy Awards coming up there would be several great options below for some stars to bring this collection to life on the red carpet.

“Yes, God, Yes” Premiere Red Carpet Wish List

Yes, God, Yes is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Karen Maine and starring Natalia Dyer. It is Maine’s feature directorial debut, based on her 2017 short film of the same name also starring Dyer. A coming of age sex comedy the New York Times review calls “Slight and sweet, and without much of an edge, “Yes, God, Yes” uses the pursuit of climax as an opportunity to take a gentle dig at religious humbug and holier-than-thou hypocrisy.” Honestly I don’t know if I would like this movie, but I still would have loved to see the film have a red carpet premiere because some of the casts style interests me. I have loved Natalia Dyer for a while now. She has consistently shocked me with the major fashion labels she is able to pull for the red carpet. For this red carpet I went for something much more laid back than the French legacy brands that she has favored wearing on the red carpet in favor of this super chic and summery Tory Burch Fall 2020 RTW dress. I’ve loved these floral blocked silk dresses and I think that Natalia would definitely be able to take this strapless asymmetric midi dress and rock it on the red carpet with effortless, breezy elegance. I would keep the styling for this look very summery adding a romantic curly updo, soft defined eyes, blush pink glossy lips, a sunshine yellow velvet Salvatore Ferragamo minaudiere rectangle box clutch to compliment the ruffles that detail the dress from bust to hem, matching simple yellow leather Jimmy Choo ‘Minny’ ankle strap sandals, and Irene Neuwirth green chrysoprase teardrop earrings to compliment the green in the pattern on the right side of the dress. I’ve recently been watching the last two seasons of 13 Reasons Why and been loving Alisha Boe. She has definitely been one I would love to see really bring the fashion factor to the red carpet. She’s been front row at New York and Milan Fashion Week’s. For a red carpet like I imagine the Yes, God, Yes premiere would have been I decided to go to a newer label that has been a favorite to the likes of Blake Lively, Demi Lovato, Olivia Culpo, and Gwyneth Paltrow: Retrofête. The brand is known for heavily beaded dresses in simple silhouette which is exactly what this tangerine orange ‘Grace’ dress which features poet sleeves, velvet detailed sash belt, keyhole cutout back, and a jewel neckline. I feel like this color on Alisha would be absolutely fantastic. With loose waves worn over one shoulder, smokey eyes, glossy antique rose pink lips, a gold Alexander McQueen crystal-embellished clasp metal box clutch, gold Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Kay’ coil cuff ankle strap sandals, and a pair of Jennifer Fisher 2″ fine thread hoop earrings this look would scream summer sex appeal and glamour from head to toe.

Yes, God, Yes is currently screening at select drive in theaters and digital cinemas and will be available for Video On Demand Tuesday July 28, 2020.

Chanel Fall 2020 Couture Red Carpet Wish List

The story of Chanel under Virginie Viard is basically, WHAT THE FUCK. We need to get Virginie out of there. She is too interconnected to Karl Lagerfeld and she doesn’t do Karl like Karl did. No one can. But it is all I continue to see season after season. I am honestly glad that the Chanel Fall 2020 Couture collection was “scaled back” to just 30 looks because I don’t want to know what the construction of the collection would have been had the petite mains had to put work into more creations. I am praying that we are nearing the end of Virginie’s reign. I would love to see what Chanel by Olivier Rousting, Clare Waight Keller, or pretty much anyone else. We are undoubtedly going to see the collection on the red carpet. Check out some of my wishes to see collection on the red carpet below.

Christian Dior Fall 2020 Couture Red Carpet Wish List

Its been over two weeks since the Christian Dior Fall 2020 Couture collection was presented. I am still obsessed. This was one of the few collections that I actually reviewed and you can read my full review of the collection here. I am honestly surprised by just how many looks from this collection I would love to see brought to life on the red carpet. Just when I was getting ready to give up on Maria Grazia Chiuri I fell in love with her creations amidst a global pandemic. 2020 is really something. So below check out my wishes to see the collection come to life on the red carpets in addition to the looks I mentioned for Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Ava DuVernay, & Sonam Kapoor in my review.

Alexis Mabille Fall 2020 Couture Red Carpet Wish List

When it comes to unabashed French glamour I always know we can count on Alexis Mabille to deliver. This whole collection in the best silk faille, velvet, satin, lace, and brocades are crafted into glamorous creations. Now the one event where we usually see Alexis Mabille designs on the red carpet, the Cannes Film Festival, has been cancelled. So I am hoping that come the fall festival and awards season that some of these gowns I would love to see stylists option the fantastical creations he presented in his Haute Couture Online show for their clients. Below you are going to find some of the wishes I really want to see come true from this collection. So check them out and let me know what you think.
