10 Best Collections of Spring 2021 – Fendi

Earlier this year it was announced that Kim Jones would be taking over Fendi. Since Karl Lagerfeld died Silvia Venturini Fendi has been helming the label that bears her family name. I have to say that each season has been better than the past and this collection has to be hands down my favorite not just from her tenure as sole creative director, but my favorite collection of the Spring 2021 season. I don’t think she, nor the house, needs Kim Jones to be successful. Silvia has been able to do at Fendi what Virginie Viard has not been able to do at Chanel. She is able to take inspiration from the late Lagerfeld and turn it into her own. She isn’t doing Fendi by Lagerfeld, but is using his memory as a jumping point. In a pre show interview with VOGUE Runway she said “This reminded me of Karl. He had a love for bed linen, he had a big collection.” That is exactly what she delivered. It was the ultimate lockdown luxe without compromising the houses tailoring. If we go back into a global pandemic lockdown again I would definitely want to wear the clothes that she sent down the runway in this collection. I was especially happy with the superb duvet inspired coats that did evoke the idea that the model had grabbed their comforter and walked down the runway, but that comforter was the most luxe thing ever created. There was a bit of a lingerie and sleepwear inspiration in many of the pieces that came down the runway. But it didn’t have an air of trash. It was all about strength and confidence with nods to sensuality. Even in the menswear looks we saw looks that evoked that same spirit. When it comes to seeing this collection on a red carpet there are definitely looks and pieces I would love to see stylists option, but ultimately I feel like this collection is much more geared toward a consumer than to the celebrity. My first wish is an excellent example of the more consumer side of this collection. This black suit which features a double breasted military inspired bodice blazer with structured peplum hips, and wide a-line sleeves and an a-line skirt with a split is definitely bankable. I feel like women in board rooms all over the world could make this look work. I definitely imagined Angelina Jolie pulling this suit off the runway and wearing it to one of the UN Goodwill Ambassador events that she attends regularly. Her signature soft waves, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black leather Christian Louboutin ‘Hot Chick’ scalloped detail pointed toe stiletto pumps, and a vintage white diamond bow and tassel brooch from Beladora would definitely put this look together perfectly for Angie.

To completely counter balance Angie I also see Billie Eilish rocking this soft grey floral chiffon pattern ensemble which features a car coat, button down shirt, and high waisted shorts. It’s a softer look for Billie, but I feel like it is totally within her wheelhouse. It would put her back up on the fashionista track. She can pull good labels I just want to see her not always wear a variation on the same thing. This ensemble is cool and I can definitely picture it being a major fashion moment for Billie with a pair of silver Fenty ‘Side Eye’ crystal vine detail sunglasses and white Christian Louboutin ‘Red Runner Donna Flat’ sneakers. There were several looks from this collection that screamed more causal than big red carpet looks. One was this sandy yellow and mud brown printed a-line dress which feature handkerchief cap sleeves, cutout sides & back, defined banded waist, and a below the knee length. It is a very chic fashion moment and something I could see Sarah Paulson rocking it for a more casual appearance. I would make it a little more glamorous styling it with a side parted blunt bob, defined eyes, light pink lips, a gold crystal embellished Judith Leiber smooth rectangle clutch, a pair of metallic gold leather Aquazzura ‘Gin 140’ platform chunky heel strappy sandals, and quirky yet glamorous Irene Neuwirth ‘Clementine Pavé’ drop earrings which feature hand-carved orange carnelian halves adorn with 18k white gold and diamond pavé bar with three 18k yellow gold leaves to really make this a super chic moment for Sarah.

I can also see this collection being a hit with many of the royals around the world. I think that the crisp tailoring in this collection is definitely something that the Royals would be drawn to. The chic sophistication of Fendi is on full display in this bold red military inspired pencil dress which features a high jewel neckline and a-line 3/4 length sleeves. It would be a gorgeous look on the absolutely gorgeous Queen Rania of Jordan. She has a very chic and sharp sense of style and I definitely can see her wearing this dress with glamorous waves, defined eyes, nude pink lips, and a pair of red crocodile embossed leather Jimmy Choo ‘Love 100’ pointed toe pumps. Silvia also showed her menswear on the runway this season after forgoing her slot on the runway during the menswear shows in July. There were definitely some super chic tailored moments. One that I loved was the black pajama inspired look which features a polo collar, cutout lace like details, large pockets, and straight leg trousers. It is a super chic look especially giving the world we live in. This look could go from the couch to date night to the red carpet. Machine Gun Kelly immediately came to mind when I was thinking who would be the perfect person to wear this look for a red carpet especially styled with a pair of black and white Christian Louboutin ‘Aurelien Strass Flat’ crystal embellished sneakers.

Finishing out the wishes from this collection is easily one of my favorite looks from the collection. If I was a woman I would definitely put this black and white ensemble which features a sheer floral embellished tank top layered over a white tank top and styled with a white tea length feathered skirt and a duvet inspired coat in my closet. Each piece has seemingly endless possibilities. Now I REALLY want to see this look hit the red carpet. It was one of my favorite looks this season. Now for the red carpet I would hand this look over to Yara Shahidi, minus the duvet coat. Yara has rocked some Fendi looks in the past and I would totally entrust her to make this a major fashON moment. Style it with big bouncy curly, smokey eyes, deep antique rose pink lips, a pair of white Amina Muaddi ‘Zula’ PVC trimmed strappy sculpted heel sandals, and a pop of color via Gismondi 1754 ‘Orecchini’ one of a kind emerald and white diamond drop earrings to really make this a MAJOR fashion moment. I couldn’t talk about this collection without quickly touching on the bags. Fendi is a bag house and this season Silvia shut down the bags. They were so amazing. I loved the yellow half mood bag, the lace veiled Baguette’s, and the crocheted evening bags. These bags are statements. They aren’t your standard ‘Peekaboo’ or ‘Baguette’ styles that Fendi sells internationally by the boat load. These are bags for the real rich ladies. These are bags that will be worth something one day.

10 Best Collections of Spring 2021 – Loewe

A sculptural extremization of fashion, magnified in all its theatricality, the Loewe Spring 2021 RTW collection is described by creative director Jonathan Anderson as a story of dramatic silhouettes exploring the craft of pattern making. This collection made me happy. It was a high volume, high octane, glamorous collection that pushed the boundaries of what fashion is. We saw a lot this season where event the most avant garde designers out there toned things down opting for more leisure based looks inspired by time spent in COVID lockdown. Instead Anderson delivered on fantasy; making me yearn for days where we will dress up again. “We have to start loving fashion again,” Anderson said to VOGUE Runway. “We don’t know what tomorrow’s going to bring. So let’s enjoy it!” I couldn’t agree more. We need to stop going back to leisure in seasonal colorways, but bring creativity to the forefront. We can always count of Jonathan Anderson to do that. Each season he gives us something different. Inspiration comes from all over but never seem to be recreations. Spiraling flaps. Balloon sleeves, balloon skirts. Crinolines. Neckerchief hems. Hoops. Giant knots. Roundness that gets bigger and bigger. A sense of elongation. Immaculate tailoring counterbalances feats of showmanship. Johnathan Anderson knows his customer isn’t interested in the basic. She wants to make a statement and she will definitely do that in this collection. Event the “basic” black skirts aren’t basic, but the elevated staples that the chicest women in the world will wear to tea or lunch styled down and then dress up for cocktail occasions. Coming up with the wishes to see this collection brought to life out of the lookbook (which was sent to editors, stylists, and influencers in big boxes to be played with on a wall like wallpaper) and onto the red carpet I really had to go to a slew of women who I feel consistently take risks. Women who aren’t afraid to be the most talked about women in the room. Let’s start my wishes with easily my favorite look from this collection which is the black birdcage woven leather cape with arm slots paired with a white silk faille dramatic bubble hem cocktail dress. I love this look for giving us medieval meets 60’s meets space age. It is not a look for the faint of heart. It needs someone who exudes presence and confidence no matter where she goes. I was having a hard time instinctively coming up with who I really wanted to see wear this look; so I went down the rabbit hole to see who had worn the label on the red carpet. The first person I saw was Tessa Thompson and my mind was pretty much sold. But then I thought of Janelle Monae. The singer and actress is known for not just her love of black and white, but also for very avant garde sartorial choices. Now while Janelle is petite and on paper this look should swallow her whole I do believe it would be an MAJOR fashion moment. A sleek updo, smokey eyes, bold red lips, a black satin Jimmy Choo ‘Callie’ beaded fringe embroidered chain strap sack evening bag, a pair of black suede and mesh Jimmy Choo ‘Liu 100’ strappy stiletto sandals, and dazzling Yeprem white diamond swirl wreath earrings would definitely put the perfect finishing touches to this look.

Now talking about avant garde fashion one of the most avant garde looks in this collection was the gold ruched silk bubble dress with a black tulle overlay is one of the most avant garde looks of the season. It gives me MAJOR high fashion modernism meets classical Renaissance ruff vibes. It is definitely not a look that many will be able to bring to life, but as I was looking at Loewe lovers I could definitely imagine Chloë Sevigny bringing this look to life. She has the weird sense of style that I feel like would make this look super cool especially if styled with a loose romantic updo, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black satin Roger Vivier ‘Broche Vivier’ crystal bucked detailed pointed toe loafer inspired pumps, and a selection of sparkle via Pomellato jewels including ‘Sabbia’ circle drop earrings in 18K rose gold with 60 black treated diamonds and a ‘Sabbia’ bangle bracelet in rhodium-plated and burnished rose god with brown and white diamonds. Not all of the looks in the collection were unapologetically dramatic glamour. We also saw Jonathan Anderson give some major moments that balance the more masculine and feminine. I do love that he gives us a fantastic balance of masculinity and femininity. This was displayed perfect with an all black look which features a polo inspired blouse that is given the Loewe twist adding major voluminous sleeves paired with wide leg pants. I feel like it could be a really good red carpet look for Billie Eilish. It has her oversized fit that she is known for, but I feel like it would be a cool fashion look for her thanks to those amazing sleeves. A pair of black and white Sergio Rossi ‘Sergio Extreme’ Swarovski crystal embellished ribbon detailed sneakers, her signature black and acid green hair, and acid green Prada ‘Linea Rossa’ active style sunglasses would make this a super cool moment for Billie.

Another cool menswear moment was the navy silk suit with voluminous cuffs on the blazer and couture like parachute pants. I immediately thought of Loewe devotee Tilda Swinton. She is the master of blurring the line between masculinity and femininity, but the day after I edited the pictures for this post the amazing Tracee Ellis Ross wore this look for Jimmy Kimmel and it was phenomenal. It blew away my expectations so I wasn’t upset that it was worn before I could put a wish put into the universe. Jonathan Anderson even knows how to make a little black dress anything but basic. Two LBDs stood out to me specifically. The first was a draped voluminous eyelet dress with a ruffled v-neckline and a wide a-line skit. It is such a flirty yet moody moment and I would love to see Rooney Mara rock it on a red carpet. I honestly think that it was the models pose (which is Rooney’s signature) is what made me think of Rooney, but I know that it is definitely something she would be drawn to. Giving this look a boost of glamour with a sleek top knot, defined eyes, bold red lips, black leather Alexander McQueen ankle strap sandals, and a pair of delicate Cartier High Jewelry white diamond pear shaped filigree inspired drop earrings would make it a beautiful red carpet moment.

The other is the tiered scalloped skirt a line cocktail dress. I could see this dress being a hit on the sales floor. I feel like there is a wide range of women who could really walk this look. It could speak to the uptown and downtown girls. I would love to see Nina Dobrev bring this dress to life on the red carpet sometime styled with a sleek center parted hairstyle tucked behind the ears, defined eyes, bold red lips, a black satin Sophia Webster ‘Clara Butterfly’ clasp clutch, black Gianvito Rossi ‘Freesia d’Orsay’ cutout ankle strap pointed toe pumps, and a selection of Nikos Koulis ‘Oui’ collections jewels including a pair of white gold earrings with oval blue sapphires, pear shape, round and trillion white diamonds and black enamel and a white gold ring with a marquise cut white diamond and black enamel. Overall I am thrilled with this collection. And well while I’m at it why not add one more with for Erykah Badu to wear that pink and white voluminous ensemble above right with a pair of coral, orange, and white Nike ‘Daybreak’ low top trainers and a two tone pink Borsalino ‘Folar’ wide brimmed hat.

10 Best Collections of Spring 2021 – Christopher John Rogers

In the official “Fashion Month” line up Christopher John Rogers swooped in and presented one of my favorite collections of the season. He decided not to show in he well earned perch on the schedule during New York Fashion Week, but it was well worth the wait. He won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award last year and the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year award this year. I have been captivated with every collection CJR has presented, and this was no different. He LOVES drama and color. That was on display this season for sure. In a Zoom interview with VOGUE Runway’s Janelle Okwodu he said “Part of the reason why the collections have been so well-received is that they’ve been quite visceral in terms of the way they were conceived. [Our team] has been like, ‘This feels exciting, we enjoy this’ instead of investigating why.” I feel like this is what designers really should do. I was just talking with friends about how commercialized many of the biggest houses are. They have a formula that they know sells and even houses like Alexander McQueen who hold avant garde creativity at their core seem to have become redundant. Christopher John Rogers does not. Each season seems like a new experiment in the codes that he has set for his house. Drama, color, femininity, and structure. These are the core of what CJR is all about and this season delivered exactly that in a way we haven’t seen from him yet. He embraced abstract pattern and a myriad of bold primary colors this season. “I was away for four months and couldn’t do anything physical with my hands, so I just bought crayons and color pencils and started scribbling like I was a kid,” Rogers said to VOGUE Runway. “I wasn’t trying to create anything specific; I just wanted to have fun and express myself. It’s about getting back to the way children see the world through very simple shapes. They put energy on the page when they draw, so this was about simplifying and translating that energy into the clothes.”  The colors and patterns elevated basics that I definitely think will sell. The more glamorous and red carpet worthy looks are AMAZING as well. There is a lot of red carpet potential in these looks. So continue to read to find out who I want to see bringing this collection to life out of the lookbook and on the red carpet. Mixing bold floral pattern with a padded tulip hip skirt this thin strap tea length gown is definitely one of the best looks from this collection. It did immediately make me think of a Rosie Assoulin Spring 2017 gown that was worn by Naomie Harris; mostly because of the fluorescent floral pattern and the hips. Now this look is far from easy to pull off. I would love to task the gorgeous Kerry Washington with bringing this look to life on a red carpet. I feel like she has the presence to really make this look work. With a sleek cropped center parted bob, defined eyes, deep red glossy lips, a blush satin Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ pearl flower embellished frame box clutch, a pair of gold Jimmy Choo ‘Tesca 100’ strappy sandals, and glamorous MATEO New York 14k gold and white pearl curve form drop earrings this look would be absolutely MAJOR.

Now while pattern and texture is a hallmark of this collection there were some really good solid colored pieces as well. One of them was this traffic stopping orange strapless gown which features a column front and a draped cape back. Orange is such a bold color to wear anytime of day, but especially for evening. There are only a handful of orange red carpet looks I love, but I can imagine that his is going to be a major red carpet moment when it gets worn. I would love to see Danai Gurira be the person who brings this look out of the lookbook and onto the red carpet. She knows how to handle drama and color and I can just imagine how good this look would be. I would style this look with a major sculpted updo, smokey eyes, glossy nude lips, a pair of matching orange Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Neyla’ ankle strap sandals, and a MAJOR exquisite necklace of undulated design, with emeralds, diamonds, and pearls, the central emerald weighing 4.5 carats, while the diamonds 25 carats total, mounted on 18kt yellow gold. Made in Italy, circa 1965 sourced from vintage jewelry dealer Eleuteri. Not all of Christopher John Rogers gowns are all about unapologetic glamour and drama. Sometimes they evoke more a laid back causal vibe, but they always make a statement. Case and point? This camisole slip gown which is sand colored from the front, but explodes into a color-blocked rainbow in the back. Now this gown isn’t something I would expect to see on a major awards season red carpet, but I feel like Gabrielle Union would definitely rock it for a gala fundraiser. I took inspiration from the laid back vibe of the look for the styling. I would love to see Gabrielle rock the red carpet in this gown styled with a big high bun of braids, defined eyes, deep burgundy glossy lips, a pair of black and brown Brother Vellies ‘Midnight Woven Olivia’ chain detail ankle strap pumps, and statement 18K Rose Gold set Fernando Jorge ‘Comet’ waterfall earrings made up of white diamonds and lapis lazuli.

I was looking at this sand quilted silk strapless tulip skirt tea length gown I couldn’t get Zendaya out of my head. I would have just gone on with using her as the pick, but the shape is so similar to the Christopher John Rogers gown that she wore for the Emmy’s last month I wanted to branch out. I was obsessed with this look as it was one of the tame-er looks from this collection and I feel like Anya Taylor Joy would take this gown and really deliver it on a red carpet. I feel like in the line up of stars I’ve picked to wear this collection that Anya stands out for sure, but I feel like she has the presence to really make this gown come to life. Style it with a loose romantic updo, defined eyes, soft pink glossy lips, a pair of light gold crystal embellished Sophia Webster ‘Giovanna’ cross strap slingback sandals, and a statement Bulgari ‘Barocko’ collection white diamond and multicolored precious stone necklace for a pop of color and I know that this could be one of the best Christopher John Rogers red carpet moments ever.Tessa Thompson was wearing Christopher John Rogers before he was cool. Since he hit the mainstream we haven’t seen Tessa rock a look from his collections. I want that to change. I cannot recall Tessa ever giving us a big princess moment on the red carpet, so why not ask her to give it to us wearing this black ballgown with bright neon piping detail all over the bodice. I feel like this look is a very modern take on the ballgown and that is what I think would make it such a cool look for Tessa to rock on the red carpet. I would go left with the styling opting for a half up and down braided hairstyle, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of black croc chunky platform Christian Louboutin ‘Foolish’ sandals, and a statement rainbow ombre Pomellato ‘Gourmette Caméléon’ chain choker made of a list of precious and semi precious stones to long to go through. It would definitely be a super cool moment for her to bring to life.

Now I had to put this wish into the universe to finish out this review. The moment I saw this neon color-blocked knit catsuit with bullseye detail on the breast my mind immediately went to Cardi B. I could see her rocking this with a matching fur coat for street style or on its own as a performance ensemble. I know the looks is something she would be drawn to and I would love to see her rock this with custom mismatched orange and yellow Christian Louboutin ‘Round Chick Alta 120’ platform peep toe half d’Orsay ankle strap pumps, long sleek center parted locks, crazy nails done in matching colors, defined smokey eyes, and bold red lips. What do you think about this collection? Who would you like to see bring looks from this collection to life on the red carpet?

“The Witches” Premiere Red Carpet Wish List

Today I am going to take a quick break from reviewing my favorite collections of the season to talk about another movie that will come and go without us getting a red carpet premiere. The HBOMax remake of The Witches is set to be released this Thursday October 22, 2020 just in time for spooky season. While I don’t think that this cult classic needed to be remade I am interested in seeing what will come from the show. I am a little disappointed that the film will not have a red carpet premiere. I feel like Anne Hathaway would have been cooking up something MAJOR with her stylist.I wanted to pay homage to Angelia Houston, the original Grand High Witch in the original The Witches, and so I picked this gorgeous black and white Georges Chakra Fall 2020 Couture structured gown which features a dramatic asymmetric ruffle draped shoulder, column skirt dramatic train, long sleeve, and a white opera glove. I do feel like this gown embodies the spirit of The Grand High Witch and I feel like Anne would be able to sell it to me with effortless ease. A sleek bun updo, thick defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of black leather Christian Louboutin ‘Loubi Queen’ ankle strap sandals, and Kwiat white diamond and colombian emerald marquise & baguette drop earrings would DEFINITELY have made this a superb glamour moment for Anne to wear to promote this film.

The Witches will start streaming on HBO Max on Thursday October 22, 2020.

10 Best Collections of Spring 2021: Halpern

“We needed joy and fantasy and escapism, and that’s truer today than it ever was, with all the horrible things that are happening in the U.S.,” Michael Halpern said to VOGUE Runway’s Anders Christian Madsen of his Spring 2021 collection. “This isn’t me turning a blind eye to those things. It’s a response.” What resulted was a small collection of just 19 looks. Each one was of a couture worthy creation, but spoke to a wide range in sense of dressing for the now. We saw Halpern show everything from feathered bubble dresses to sequin pajamas. I’ve actually already featured one of the looks from this collection in my Emmy Awards wishes for Yvonne Orji. What Halpern has continued to us he is a master of, like most labels that show in London, print/color/texture. It was phenomenal. It wasn’t the biggest or most business as usual collection this season, but each look left an impact on me. The looks in the collection ranged in historical inspiration from the 1930’s to the 1970’s and the range of people I think would be perfect to bring the looks to life on the red carpet are as varried as the styles that were presented. I really wanted to put wishes for EVERYTHING in this collection, but ultimately decided not to. I decided at the last minute add one more to the ones below, but I felt like I really needed to put the thought of Cate Blanchett wearing the look pictured center above. The decadent 70’s YSL inspired black and gold look which features a gold leopard brocade structured blazer, a silk charmuse column skirt, and ruffled jabot is gorgeous and super impactful. Cate immediately came to mind when I saw this look as I was flipping through the lookbook and I can just imagine it being a major red carpet moment for our red carpet QUEEN. A sleek retro updo, defined eyes, punchy pink lips, a pair of black mid curved heel Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Alyssa’ slingback pointed toe pumps, and vintage Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. 18k gold and white diamond rope cluster earrings would definitely make this the major glamour moment I want it to be. So check out more of my favorite looks from the collection and find out who I want to wear them on the red carpet below. Some of my favorite pieces in the collection are the metallic gold leopard print brocade. The high low bubble hem gown with a squared neckline and short puffy sleeves was definitely one of the top looks from not just the collection, but the season. It has a very fun elegance about it. It gives me distinct 60’s meets now vibes and I feel like the gorgeous Zendaya would definitely be able to bring this look to life on a red carpet be it in person or virtual. She knows how to sell these more avant garde looks with effortless ease. A curly bun updo, gold smokey eyes, deep burgundy lips, a pair of gold and raspberry pink Malone Souliers ‘Penelope’ metallic leather pointed toe pumps with a curved edge, and a selection of Vanleles ‘Out of Africa’ jewels including a pair of Mozambican responsibly sourced ruby, rubelite, and diamond ‘Stiletto’ drop earrings, and two matching cocktail rings (one & two) would definitely make this a MAJOR fashion moment.

As I mentioned I am really loving the gold brocade that we saw in this collection. I was picking my wishes for this list and at the last second decided to swap my wish for the look which features a black sequin top with 3/4 length sleeves and a high waisted ankle length bow detailed pencil skirt made of the leopard brocade. Originally I was going to say Lupita Nyong’o (who would definitely be an excellent choice) but then I thought about Jennifer Hudson and her (hopefully) upcoming promo tour for RESPECT and I was inspired. I feel like Jennifer is going to be serving up MAJOR fashion moments during this promo tour (be it in person or virtually) and hopefully all through awards season. This look screams 60’s glam and I feel like that will be on the menu quite a bit to pay homage to Aretha Franklin’s legacy. This look with a short black pixie hairstyle, smokey eyes, bold glossy red lips, a pair of black lave over nude Jimmy Choo ‘Love 100’ pointed toe pumps, and Tiffany & Co. ‘Schlumberger Seven Leaves’ ear clips in 18k gold and platinum with green tourmalines and white diamonds would be PERFECTION. FEATHERS. Anyone who is a regular reader of If I Was A Stylist will know that I LOVE feathers for the red carpet. They are a fun and glamorous touch that adds drama to basically any look. This season is the first we have seen Michael Halpern use feathers and he did so expertly. Easily another of the best looks of the collection comes from the flamingo pink and black bubble dress. It holds no purpose but fun and glamour. I would love to be the person wearing this whispy ball to an event. It will take someone with PRESENCE to really work this look, so of course I turned to the queen of unapologetic drama: Rita Ora. I can definitely see Rita rocking this look on a red carpet like the American Music Awards or the British Fashion Awards. Now because the dress itself is such a statement I would love to see Rita style it with a sleek top knot updo, smokey eyes, her signature red lips, black leather Christian Louboutin ‘Loubi Queen’ ankle strap sandals, and a pair of white diamond floral Gismondi 1964 ‘Prato Fiorito’ ear crawling earrings.

Also using feathers Michael Halpern gave us Palm Springs hostess glamour with this coral and hot pink zebra print silk charmuse caftan gown trimmed in ostrich feathers. I could definitely see someone like Tracee Ellis Ross bringing this look to life as a major glamour from home look for a “virtual” event. Style it with big bouncy curls, defined eyes, nude glossy lips, hot pink crystal embellished Christian Louboutin ‘Kate Strass’ pointed toe pumps, and a selection of vintage jewels from Eleuteri including a pair of Bulgari “Saetta” ear-clips with amethysts and citrines, mounted on 18kt yellow gold circa 1980 and a major cocktail ring by Mimi Milano centering an octagonal cut amethyst, highlighted by pearls and mounted in 18kt yellow gold circa 1970 to really bring the at home glamour to life.Michel Halpern has been a master of color and pattern. This season was no different. There were a couple of really great patterns woven throughout the collection. One was the emerald green and black large polka dot. It was used on more avant garde and more casual looks. In the more casual iteration it was a long poet sleeve midi dress which I would absolutely DIE to see worn by Meryl Streep. It is a long shot of a wish, but I feel like it while the print definitely isn’t something I feel like Meryl would be drawn to the silhouette of the dress is. This look would be finished perfectly for Meryl styled with a chic casual updo, defined eyes, glossy nude pink lips, and a pair of black and saffron yellow Paul Andrew ‘Rhea 55’ slingback d’Orsay pointed toe pumps.

The final wish I have from this collection is for the gorgeous Amal Clooney. We saw Michael Halpern use tweed for the first time this season too giving us a major red plaid moment in several looks to wrap up the looks. I did love this fitted mini dress which features gold button details, a square neckline, cropped sleeves, and black feathered cuffs the moment I saw it. It blurs the lines between work wear and party wear and I definitely think that it would be a great look for Amal to wear for a date night with hubby George especially if styled with her signature waves, defined eyes, red lips, a black glitter Jimmy Choo ‘Ellipse’ clutch, a pair of red crystal embellished Prada round toe satin pumps, and vintage white diamond and ruby French style drop earrings from London based vintage jewelry dealer Jewellery Discovery. What do you think about this collection? Who would you like to see bring looks from this collection to life on the red carpet? You can hear me and my podcast partner in crime debate about this collection on our podcast The Fashion Forward Friends now streaming on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

10 Best Collections of Spring 2021: Balmain

After a DISASTROUS turn from the Balmain Fall 2020 RTW collection and a major Resort 2021 collection I was happy to see Olivier Rousting have a MAJOR success on his hands for the brands Spring 2021 RTW presentation during Paris Fashion Week. It was one of the more business as usual collections of the season and I adored it. It felt like he was paying his homage to those who came before him not just including the house founder Pierre Balmain, but also Pierre Cardin and his mentor and the previous Balmain creative director Christophe Decarnin. The story of Balmain has always been about excess and that is exactly what we see come from this collection. It was all about 80’s and 90’s glamour. It embraced the supermodel set that Decarnin loved so much. It reinterpreted the 1970’s Pierre Balmain monogram and Cardin’s Pagoda shoulders inspiration and did so in such a modern breath of fresh air. While most of the season we saw designer’s whose bread and butter are based in glamour and evening wear shy away from that and deliver more of a casual look. The Balmain woman doesn’t know what the word casual means. This collection was a perfect way to idolize and hope for brighter and more glamorous tomorrows in the midst of the global pandemic. The show was staged live but due to COVID-19 travel restrictions most of the “front row” was there virtually on giant television screens. Anna Wintour, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian were just some of the 40ish guests who “Zoomed” in to watch the show. Below you are going to find some of the wishes I have to immediately see brought to life on a red carpet.  The collection opened in vibrant style with a highlighter pink power suit which featured a padded pagoda shoulder jersey long double breasted blazer, an asymmetric draped jersey mini dress worn as a tunic,  and a pair of slim fit flared pants. It is a major lesson in redefining the power suit. It is bold, cool, and sexy while still being covered and mostly modest. I would love to see the gorgeous Jodie Turner Smith bring this look to life on the red carpet. In what we have gotten to see of Jodie’s style so far I know that she loves bold color and strong looks. I can definitely see this being a super cool moment for her to bring to life on a red carpet especially if styled with a high cropped hairstyle, thick defined eyes, dark berry glossy lips, a pair of fluorescent pink Christian Louboutin ‘Degrastrass 100’ crystal embellished suede and PVC pointed toe pumps, and simple yet glamorous Yeprem ‘Y-Conic’ white diamond ear huggers.

Talking about power dressing there were still some superb “casual” moments in this collection as well. I would definitely like to see many of them rocked for more casual appearances, when they start to happen again. One of my favorite of the more casual moments we saw in this collection was the white monogrammed guipure lace pagoda shoulder mini jacket dress belted and worn as a blazer over a pair of fitted flared light was jeans. Now I had a bit of a hard time coming up with the person to bring this look to life, but the moment I thought of Michelle Obama wearing this look for a talk show appearance I was SOLD. I have loved seeing Michelle’s style evolve to being much more edgy and glam than classically elegant as she was when she was First Lady. I would LOVE to see Michelle style this suit with a strapless white Wolford ‘Fatal’ tube top, soft waves, defined eyes, bold red lips, white Bottega Veneta ‘BV Point’ rolled leather pointed toe slingback pumps, and a pair of 14k gold and white pearl Mateo New York semi circle geometric drop earrings. It would definitely continue to redefine power dressing. Olivier didn’t have his usual show during Paris Men’s Fashion Week over the summer. Due to COVID that event went digital and while he is the master of social I think that he really loves a runway show. So we saw him included his Spring 2021 Menswear collection with his womenswear. The virtual front row was packed with with Balmain devotees including Maluma, Usher, and Machine Gun Kelly. Any of them could rock the black cropped jacket tuxedo ensemble shown above, but immediately Timothee Chalamet came to mind. I feel like this look does speak to his sense of style for sure and should any of his projects get a release over the next couple of months I definitely think this should be an option for a red carpet premiere especially if he styled it with a pair of black leather Christian Louboutin ‘Will Buckle’ buckled spat ankle boots.

One of my absolute favorite looks from the collection were the draped crystal mesh cap sleeve cropped tops finished with a raw hem paired with high waisted light was denim over the knee fitted shorts. The tops were shown in three different colorways: silver, lime, and raspberry. The raspberry definitely spoke the most to me. It is a super cool look and a cool girl is definitely needed to make this look come to life. So I would send it to the ultimate cool girl, Zoe Kravitz. Her cropped pixie, defined eyes, dark rose pink lips, and a pair of black strappy Gianvito Rossi lace up ankle high sandals would definitely make sure that this look oozes cool girl glamour from head to toe. Now the gowns that Olivier showed were more basic than I would come to expect. Now with that being said I still think they would be super glamorous. This black crystal embellished high slit column gown which features plunging neckline with a sheer modesty panel is easily one of my favorites. Now the wish I have this look might come as a bit of a surprise. I would love to see Kristen Stewart bring this look to life on the red carpet. It is sexy and glamorous. Classic in the most modern way. I feel like that is what Kristen does the best. A coif spiked updo, defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Galativi P Strass 100’ crystal embellished mesh paneled pointed toe pumps, and a selection of Chanel Haute Jewelry including a statement ‘1932’ white diamond layered fringe collar necklace and a teardrop white diamond cuff bracelet would make it the perfect mesh of edge and glamour.

The final look in this set of wishes and review is this look that meshes business power dressing with sexy party girl glamour. This silver crystal embellished jumpsuit which features a think strap halter, plunging neckline, and a flared pant leg paired with a black longline jersey pagoda shoulder blazer with a single gold button, and an oversized white button down just oozes cool girl glamour, as the Balmain woman typically does. I am obsessed with this look and I really want to see Charlize Theron bring it to life on a red carpet. I feel like it would be a good out of Dior moment for her really letting her sexy yet boss side flow. I know she would own it on the red carpet especially styled with a chic pixie, defined eyes, glossy blush pink lips, a black crystal embellished Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ clutch with a crystal clasp, a pair of black and silver crystal embellished Aquazzura ‘Bow Tie’ pointed toe pumps, and a glamorous white diamond Harry Winston asymmetrical necklace. What do you think about this collection? Who would you like to see bring looks from this collection to life on the red carpet? 10 Best Collections of Spring 2021: Sukeina

I’ve decided to talk about the Spring 2021 collections differently this season. I got so busy with work at the beginning of “Fashion Month” that I wasn’t able to keep up with writing reviews of the collections. So instead of multiple reviews good, bad, and indifferent I picked my top 10 collections of the season and will review them. In the midst of the pandemic I was overjoyed to see designers bring creativity and glamour to the collections. With many of the biggest heavy hitters deciding to sit the traditional calendar out this season it allowed for a lot of younger talent to shine. One of those was Sukeina. Beautiful and subtly mysterious, Sukeina is a tangible expression of an ongoing romance between the concept of femininity and the brands creative aesthetic of founder/creative director Omar Salam. This ‘romance’ evolves from a ‘language’ spoken between exotic fabrics and a gifted talent that seeks less to clothe the physical than it does to translate and visually express the essence of inner beauty and unique spirit that is womanhood.  By escaping the conformity of merely making ‘clothes for women’, what ensues are collections that are beguiling, exotic and transcendent, meticulously detailed yet glamorous in their simplicity. In a word, ethereal. He made his debut presenting a lookbook during New York Fashion Week: Digital. It made a splash.

The Sukeina Spring 2021 RTW collection is titled “Miracle” and that it was. In a season where there was a lot of dialed back details I was in love with the attention to detail that we saw in this collection. It was unique. In fashion collections do tend to be political in one way or another. This collection is no different. The idea centers on power dressing; having a seat at the table, something Black creators like Omar Salam have continuously struggled to receive. In a phone interview with Vogue “If one color is missing, the picture can’t be complete. They might not [explicitly] say that someone isn’t allowed in the room, but when all that is necessary to get into those rooms excludes an entire group, the message is clear.” So this collection was all about using African heritage mixed with western power dressing. Malian dress, Kenya’s Maasai tribe, and the Bassari people of the West African region all helped serve as the inspiration for this collection. While Salam referenced these cultures it did not come across as costume-y or appropriation. I was absolutely obsessed from the first moment I saw it. Below you are going to find 8 major moments from this collection I would like to see stars snatch out of the lookbook and bring to life on the red carpet, if we even get any more red carpets coming up.As I was first looking at this collection the first celebrity to pop into my mind was Cardi B. I feel like the aesthetic of this collection is something that Cardi would be totally interested in. I really would love to see Cardi rock this red ‘Kyte Cloud’ dress which features mesh construction, a mock neck, intricate embellishments, and cutouts on the hips. It is glamorous and trashy and that is exactly what I would want to see Cardi bring to life. She knows how to walk that line perfectly. With a sleek center parted hairstyle, defined eyes, dark antique rose pink lips, a pair of red suede three strap Giuseppe Zanotti crystal embellished sandals, and a pair of white diamond Butani vine chandelier earrings I know that this would be a major fashion moment for Cardi to bring to life on the red carpet.

I was also immediately drawn to this lime green and black ‘Cloud Mini’ high neck mini dress which features puffy feathered sleeves, mesh construction, and intricate embroidery. It’s such a fun fashion moment and I really do think that it could be a cool look for Miley Cyrus. She’s been killing the fashion game lately and I definitely think that this look would fit her glam grunge aesthetic perfectly especially if it was styled with thick kohl rimmed eyes, glossy pink lips, and a pair of black Rene Caovilla ‘Cleo’ crystal embellished satin satin ankle cuff coil sandalsSex wasn’t the only thing on the menu in the Sukeina Spring 2021 RTW collection. We saw several super sophisticated and lady like looks too. I loved seeing this burnt orange ensemble which consists of a ‘Butterfly’ organza long sleeve bodysuit blouse and a ‘Delta’ structured origami fold detailed pencil skirt. Again this was a look that immediately put a star in my head? Who? Well obviously Jennifer Lopez. It would be a really cool interview ensemble for JLo. Style it with a sleek low bun, defined eyes, dark berry lips, a light brown Celine ‘Medium 16’ top handle natural calfskin bag, a pair of metallic gold Casadei ‘Blade’ croc effect pointed toe pumps, gold Elie Saab gradient effect oversized sunglasses, and dazzling Loren Jewels sterling silver and 18kt gold pave diamond hoop earrings with 7.17 carat total weight of champagne diamonds to really make it a superb fashion moment.

While the collection was uber sexy the super covered black gown ensemble which features intricate embroidery, long sleeves with scarf detail on the cuffs, high neck, origami folded details, and a fit to flare skirt was definitely a standout. It is going to be a difficult look to pull off, but I feel like Mary J. Blige would be the perfect person to bring the look to life. Now the gown itself is such an intricate statement I would just love to see her style the gown with a blonde fingerwave updo, defined eyes, bold glossy lips, and a pair of black leather Vetements drill-bit heel pointed toe pumps. We know that Kim Kardashian would be all over some of the sexiest looks from this collection, even though she has been really into vintage for the last year. I saw this black mesh ‘Kyte’ long sleeve dress which features a plunging neckline, lace up detail on the front, blouson sleeves, drop waist, cutout detail on the hips, and a flared handkerchief hem and immediately thought of Kim. While I do think it would be a bit of an eye roll moment as it is perfectly within Kim’s usual MO I definitely think it is something she would rock on a red carpet. A sleek high ponytail, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of black Amina Muaddi ‘Zula’ strappy crystal embellished and PVC detail sculpted heel sandals, and simple yet glamorous Lorraine Schwartz white diamond emerald cut drop earrings would definitely make this a very Kim but also very high fashion moment.

My final wish, for this list at least, is for the one and only Beyonce. I would love to see her bring this black ‘Tocca’ embroidered mesh jacket with strong shoulders with a white collar to life as a major performance moment. I feel like I can definitely picture Beyonce rocking a stage wearing this jacket over a black Wolford ‘Mat de Luxe’ spaghetti strap bodysuit. A sleek high ponytail, smokey eyes, bold red lips, and a pair of black Saint Laurent ‘Moon’ over the knee boots which feature a chunky heel and a lace up detail up the back are exactly how I would bring this look to life as a major performance ensemble. So yes I am so excited about this collection. I feel like we are going to see stylists really embracing this collection for the red carpet. Who would you like to see bring these looks to life?

2020 Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet Wish List

Tomorrow night are the 2020 pandemic version of the Billboard Music Awards. The awards are finally happening, in a virtual event, after being postponed earlier this year. I don’t know what to expect, but there are some major names in the list of nominees and performers so I hope to see a lot of these stars over the course of the telecast tomorrow night. Check out some of the absolutely major moments I want to see these stars rock tomorrow night for the virtual “red carpet” and let me know which are your favorites and which ones you most want to see brought to life.

2020 Billboard Music Awards Hostess Red Carpet Wish List

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards are going to look a lot different this year. As with all the other awards shows in the era of COVID it will be a digital event. I hope that this event falls more along the lines of the MTV VMAs than the Emmy’s. Kelly Clarkson is ready to take the Billboard Music Awards by storm – again! The American Idol alum and Grammy winning songstress will host the show for her third year in a row on Wednesday October 14, 2020. In a recent interview Kelly gave us a sneak peek at what she and her team are putting together. They aren’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic stop their plans for create a safe and unforgettable night! In fact, Kelly even teased an emotional opening number which she hopes gives fans a different kind of 2020 vibe than many have been feeling. So below you are going to find picks for six looks I would love to see Kelly bring to life on the virtual red carpet.

To open the show I would LOVE to see Kelly kick the night off in high glamour wearing this electric blue sequined velvet Tadashi Shoji Fall 2020 RTW draped cold shoulder gown with a faux wrap style skirt. I feel like this gown is definitely out of Kelly’s norm. I am not necessarily the biggest fan of her style and I feel like this could be a great opportunity for her to bring some major fashion moments in the midst of a glamour drought due to the pandemic. This gown would hug her curves, but flatter them. I feel like styling this gown with old Hollywood waves, defined smokey eyes, bold red lips, a pair of matching electric blue metallic leather Saint Laurent ‘Zoe’ pointed toe pumps, and a selection of jewels from Anabela Chan including a pair of dazzling, shoulder-grazing white diamond pendant earrings inspired by ancient brush-script calligraphy and a stunning ‘Mirage’ cocktail ring in 18k white gold and rhodium vermeil, hand-set with an array of laboratory-grown synthesised and simulated gemstones including a center royal blue sapphire, with marquise, trillion and round brilliant cut green emeralds, blue sapphires and blue topaz.

For her first change I went off the rack to this black and silver Balmain sequin embellished cocktail dress inspired by the brands Spring 2020 RTW runway collection. I think that this is a super sexy, dazzling, and glamorous moment and I think that it would be a chic moment for Kelly to wear as a hostess of a major music awards show. I know that Balmain for a music awards show is a little cliche, but I think that cliche would put Kelly back on the top of her game especially if she styled it with a sleek ponytail, defined eyes, blush pink glossy lips, a pair of black suede Christian Louboutin ‘Rabakate Alta’ 120 peep toe bow detailed half d’Orsay platform pumps, and Yvan Tufenkjian ‘Stacked’ collection ear cages.

Another cliche designer to pick for Kelly is a look from Versace, but I think that this black, white, and gold Versace baroque printed stretch jersey midi gown which features a glamorous draped design, halter neck, open back, and a thigh high split would be super cool. It is definitely riskier than we are used to seeing from Kelly, but I want her to take risks. I just want the risks she takes to flatter her shape. The way this gown is draped I think it would, as long as the sizing and tailoring is done perfectly. Now I would go full glam with old Hollywood waves, smokey eyes, nude pink lips, a pair of black Versace ‘Virtus Plaque’ ankle strapped sandals with gold metal detail, and DAZZLING yellow gold, white diamond, and black enamel Nikos Koulis ‘Feelings’ collection tapered chandelier earrings to really make this look superb for Kelly.

It wouldn’t be a list for Kelly Clarkson if I didn’t include one look from her go to designer, Christian Siriano. I am sure he is making something custom for Kelly, but I would LOVE to see her wear this black liquid velvet draped Christian Siriano one sleeved gown with a gathered detail on the hip and a thigh high split. It is a balance of classic glamour and modern elegance which I think is perfect for Kelly. I would definitely see this being a superb palate cleanser when it comes to all the sequined, printed, and color looks I’ve picked for Kelly to bring to life on the Billboard Music Awards stage. A sleek updo, defined eyes, bold red lips, a pair of black and silver crystal embellished Jimmy Choo ‘Klerise `150’ platform round toe ankle strap pumps, and white diamond Amwaj waterfall drop earrings would finish this look perfectly.

Now aside from Christian Siriano I KNEW I wanted to feature a look from Christopher John Rogers for Kelly. The major up and coming design talent knows how to dress a woman with curves and I feel like this marigold iridescent knit gown from the Christopher John Rogers Fall 2020 RTW collection would be a really cool FASHION moment for Kelly to wear on the stage at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards. I adore the color and the cut is both mod and modern at the same time. Keeping a sleek updo and styling this gown with a defined gold lined eye, dark rose pink lips, gold and silver glitter Giuseppe Zanotti block heel platform ankle strap sandals, and a pair of Kwiat ‘Cobblestone’ oval drop earrings with white diamond accents set in 18k yellow gold would definitely ensure that Kelly did CJR proud.

The final wish I have for Kelly is this metallic red and fuchsia Tanya Taylor Resort 2021 one shoulder pleated cocktail dress which features a ruffled shoulder, thin gold belted waist, and a tiered a-line skirt. I was pretty much done picking looks for Kelly when I saw this dress and thought about how it would be a great, unexpected, moment for Kelly to wear for the Billboard Music Awards. I feel like this dress is could be a real game changer when it comes to Kelly’s style. A sleek bun updo, defined eyes, light blush pink lips, a pair of red Casadei ‘Blade Modern Love’ pointed toe pumps, and Anabela Chan ruby cushion wing stud earrings would make sure that this is the perfect look for Kelly yo close out her 2020 Billboard Music Awards hostess duties.

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards will take place on Wednesday October 14, 2020.
