We are just a couple of hours away from the Golden Globes “red carpet” however that will look exactly, but before that carpet starts I have some wishes I want to put into the universe for next weekends Critics Choice Awards. We know that this years show will be much like the Globes tonight where the host and presenters are expected live, but all the nominees will join the show remotely. I just hope that people take the approach of getting dressed up to join the show from home like Zendaya and Tracee Ellis Ross did for the Emmy’s last year. I don’t want to see stars in pajamas all awards season long. It was a cute trope for the Emmy’s, but it’s one that will get real old real fast. So you aren’t going to see any pajamas here. I really can’t believe that Amanda Seyfried has been an awards season fixture for a while now, but is just now earning her first nominations. She always brings drama and glamour to the red carpet with looks that are visually interesting. I’ve kept to a very subdued color palate for Amanda so far this awards season with the Elie Saab Couture gown I picked for her to wear for the Golden Globes and the vintage Prada dress I used for my AFI Awards wish. I decided to keep that soft palate theme going with this dusty mauve Antonio Grimaldi Spring 2021 Couture strapless gown which features an asymmetrical bead embroidered neckline, a wave of ostrich feathers, and a column silhouette. I feel like Antonio Grimaldi could be a major red carpet force if the brand put the same effort into VIP PR as it does in paying the different Vogue’s around the world to feature the collections on their websites. This gown is classic yet boundary pushing all at the same time. It is all party on the top and classic on the bottom. I feel that this gown is perfect for the Critics Choice Awards where we don’t often see big couture gowns and stars take some risks. Since Amanda is nominated for the first time I wanted to make sure it was a moment befitting a nominee and I think this would be perfection. Style this gown with a sleek center parted hairstyle tucked behind the ears, defined eyes, deep mauve lips, a pair of nude satin Aquazzura ‘Bow Tie’ crystal embellished ankle strap sandals, and a pair of delicate pink morganite and white diamond Tiffany & Co. gold scroll set teardrop earrings and I know that Amanda would deliver the moment I am craving.
Now I know I just said that most stars give more of a simplistic look on the Critics Choice Awards red carpet, but I don’t think that Cynthia Erivo knows the definition of simple. She really is a magpie who loves to give us DRAMA and GLAMOUR. She’s been one of the stars during lockdown that has consistently shown up and shown out with major fashion moments. So should we see her during the Critics Choice Awards telecast, where she is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, I want to see her bring that same vibe to the stage or screen. I turned to the archives of Vera Wang to pull out this black strapless gown from the brands Spring 2016 Bridal collection which features a built in bustier, tummy cutout, dramatic ostrich feather skirt, a thigh high split, and a long train to find that moment. It is a perfect balance of sexy, glamour, modernity, and drama and I know that Cynthia would be a perfect person to bring this look out of the archive. Her signature bleach blonde shaved head, defined smokey eyes, glossy nude lips, a crystal embellished Judith Leiber Couture ‘Wildcat Black Panther’ minaudiere, a pair of black Roger Vivier ‘Mini Broche Vivier’ crystal buckle peep toe platform sandals with a crystal embellished clear lucite chunky heel, and a statement Chopard Red Carpet Collection fringe choker would make sure that Cynthia is delivered that dramatic glamour from head to toe.
I almost changed my wish for Dan Levy to wear for the Critics Choice Awards this morning after seeing a major piece of Boucheron jewelry I want him to wear, but I decided I’m going to hold onto that for a future wish. I went for a really wild and statement making menswear moment for Dan to wear for the Critics Choice Awards red carpet next weekend. I saw this black, gold, and green leaf print Libertine Fall 2021 RTW tuxedo during New York Fashion Week: Digital and fell in love with it. I would definitely add this to my personal wardrobe and I think that Dan could really bring this look to the Critics Choice Awards. Should we have to work with Dan Zooming into the show to most likely collect his Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series trophy I feel like this look would POP on the screen. I think that styling this suit with the white shirt and big bow tie from the lookbook adding thick black frame glasses and a pair of black velvet Christian Louboutin ‘Marpyramide’ loafers with gold square studs on the heels would put this look together perfectly.
Jurnee Smollett Bell is nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series and I really want to see what she will bring to the red carpet. Having looked at some of her past red carpet looks I know that she could bring some really major drama and avant garde moments to the red carpet. I’ve included her in some of my posts for events where her show Lovecraft Country has been nominated or honored. I did a bold ADEAM suit for the AFI Awards and a LBV gown for the Globes, but for the Critics Choice where she is actually nominated I wanted a true major glamour moment. I knew immediately as I was putting this list together that I wanted to use this intricately black beaded Nicholas Jebran Fall 2020 Couture gown which features a strapless structured bustier, dramatic plunging sweetheart neckline, portrait sleeves, defined waist, wrap style column skirt, and a super sexy thigh high split was what I wanted to use to give Jurnee a major glamour moment. I would make sure this look screams glamour from head to toe styling it with a sleek avant garde retro inspired updo, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Jewel Queen 100’ ankle strap and crystal embellished bow detailed sandals, and a statement Bayco ‘Magnificent’ collection collar necklace featuring 31.76 carats of Colombian emeralds and 74.09 carats of white diamonds.
Finishing out today’s wishes is the always beautiful Tessa Thompson. I always love seeing Tessa get dressed up. She has served up looks while promoting projects like Passing and Sylvie’s Love in lockdown. The latter is where she earns her Critics Choice Award nomination this year. I was surprised that Amazon Studios decided to run Sylvie’s Love in the Television category instead of film, but it gave Tessa her only nomination this awards season. So with that in mind I wanted to pick something superb for her to wear for the Critics Choice Awards “red carpet” this year. I was in my couture archives and when I saw this silver and gold stretch Schiaparelli Spring 2021 Couture long sleeve gown which features a high neck, fitted silhouette, and over 100,00 Swarovski crystals covering the entire body I knew it was perfect for Tessa. I can just imagine how the stretch fit of this couture gown would hug all of Tessa’s curves and I know that she would work it from head to toe. To make this major moment even more major I would add a bun of braids, defined eyes, deep mauve matte lips, a pair of gold Tom Ford ‘Padlock’ metallic leather ankle strap sandals, a selection of major Mateo New York jewels including 14k gold set ‘Sunset’ citrine and white diamond geometric drop earrings, 14k gold set citrine and white diamond ‘Point of Focus’ coil ring, an ‘East West’ chunky citrine cocktail ring, a geometric 14k gold set white diamond ‘The Gift’ ring, and a 14k gold set ‘Secret Diamond Initial’ crystal quartz ring with a T initial halo set in white diamonds.
The 2021 Critics Choice Awards will take place on Sunday March 7, 2021. You can find all of my wishes for this red carpet here.
