As they say fashion week stops for nothing. Well this season the Coronavirus tried to shut down the bi-annual Milan Fashion Week, and only partially succeeded. While the theaters on the final day of Milan Fashion Week might have been devoid of the usual guests of editors, buyers, celebrities, and influencers the shows still went on with those aforementioned people watching the collections come down the runway via a livestream from their hotel rooms. Overall I feel like while in shear number I was disappointed in the offerings that came out of Milan, but overall the quality of moment far exceeded both New York and London. In my wishes below you will find some absolutely major wishes for which I am now sending major positive energy out into the universe to manifest the red carpet moments and keep be excited about fashion. After loosing inspiration towards the end of last year and a mostly lackluster and rushed awards season the looks below give me hope that this year will have major glamour moments in store for us.
We have just over a week until this years Emmy Awards and I have to say that aside from a single look here and there that I am still CRAVING those major fashion moments on the red carpet. The stars in this set of wishes are some whom I don’t know who will attend, a fresh face, a star whom I believe has potential but doesn’t live up to it, a rising fashion superstar, and a dude whom I want to shake up the menswear game. I definitely went for dazzling glamour for these wishes. Are you ready to dive right in?Beyonce is actually nominated for several Creative Arts Emmy’s this week for her Netflix special Homecoming. Now I highly doubt that Bey will attend the “Schemmy’s” as they were so beautifully dubbed by comedienne Kathy Griffin a decade ago. Beyonce doesn’t walk a whole lot of red carpets. The LA and London premieres for The Lion King earlier this summer were actually the first red carpets the Beyonce has walked in two years. That being said if she sneaks in a back door at the Primetime Emmy Awards next weekend then I want to see her do it in high glamour. I decided to go with a very glamorous, and highly sexy, moment for Beyonce to wear for the 2019 Emmy Awards with this dark purple Nicholas Jebran Fall 2019 Couture draped column gown which features intricate beading allover, a dramatic plunging neckline, and long fitted sleeves. The gown is definitely glamour and sex appeal defined and I am really interested in seeing what Beyonce could do with this look. A sleek updo, smokey eyes, dark crimson red lips, a pair of purple satin and PVC Gianvito Rossi ‘Plexi’ pointed toe pumps, and black diamond Lorraine Schwartz three hoop earrings with white diamond teardrop pendants would definitely make this an absolutely major moment for Bey to deliver for the 2019 Emmy Awards. Up next is a rising star, Florence Pugh. She is part of the cast of the Amazon Prime Video film King Lear nominated for Outstanding Television Movie. I hope we see her on the Emmy Awards red carpet because I really want to get to know her style more heading into her promo tour this fall for Little Women. I would love to see Florence deliver glamour on the Emmy Awards red carpet next weekend is this black silk and satin Alexis Mabille Fall 2019 Couture bustier gown which features a draped bow halter neckline in white satin with a generous high low skirt and a sweeping train. I believe that this gown delivers a look that while Florence isn’t a major player, yet, I think would definitely put her in great footing on the springboard of her major upcoming fall/winter season. Finishing this look for Florence with a sleek vintage inspired updo, defined eyes, soft nude lips, black suede Jimmy Choo ‘Talaya’ crystal embellished ankle tied sandals, and dazzling white diamond Chopard Red Carpet Collection drop earrings would ensure that Florence definitely is able to capture attention.Seeing that she has exited her role as a Saturday Night Live cast member this very well could be the last Emmy Awards where Kate McKinnon is nominated. When it comes to her red carpet style I am always wanting just a little bit more from her. I don’t know if she just needs a new stylist, or if designers just won’t lend to her. I don’t know why they wouldn’t. She is a big recognizable name and I know that given the right gown and styling I know that Kate could deliver a glamorous moment on the red carpet. I decided to go right to something dazzling for Kate picking the purple sequin Naeem Khan Resort 2020 halter neck column gown almost immediately. I feel like this gown delivers a major glamour moment that I could see Kate wear. Now I feel like I would ask Naeem Khan to customize this gown to have a dramatic train, but that might be pushing it a little bit too far outside of Kate’s comfort zone. Now I know this look would be that glamorous moment for Kate especially if styled with a sleek side parted low bun, smokey eyes, nude pink lips, a pair of simple black Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudistsong’ sandals, and and a pair of dazzling white diamond Butani floral drop earrings.I am SUPER excited to see what POSE star MJ Rodriguez will bring to the red carpet at the Emmy Awards next weekend. The actress has been SERVING moments on the red carpet since bursting onto the scene earlier this year. She started the year wearing a lot of Prabal Gurung, but her dossier of designers has expanded to labels like Erdem, Dundas, Cong Tri, and Richard Quinn. I have decided that the Emmy Awards is the perfect place for MJ to have her first major couture moment. So when I was picking looks for this red carpet I went right to my Fall 2019 Couture folder to search for the perfect gown for MJ to wear on this red carpet. When I saw this bright tangerine orange Georges Hobeika Fall 2019 Couture asymmetrically draped gown which features a single caped sleeve, cutout bodice, a thigh high split, and a black feathered waist I immediately thought it would be the most major moment for MJ to bring to life on the red carpet at the 2019 Emmy Awards. It is the perfect meshing of drama, sex appeal, and glamour and would be an absolutely major moment on MJ especially when styled with orange Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Neyla’ ankle strap sandals, a teased curl bob, defined eyes, dark red lips, and deGrisogono brown diamond and citrine drop earrings. Finishing out today is Richard Madden who stars in the Outstanding Drama Series nominated Netflix show Bodyguard. I personally loved this show. It was an easy binge for me. I was shocked that after a Golden Globe win for his role in the series that Richard wasn’t nominated for an Emmy for his performance in the show. I do hope that he still attends this years Emmy Awards, because well he is just pretty to look at. For this red carpet I decided to go with a midnight blue tuxedo picking this Emporio Armani Spring 2020 Menswear double breasted tuxedo jacket which features a pixelated metallic jacquard pattern and contrasting satin lapels. Now I wouldn’t keep the full runway styling. I would style it in a rather classic manner with a crisp white tuxedo shirt, a matching navy satin bow tie, a pair of navy tuxedo pants with a satin stripe down the side, and black Christian Louboutin ‘Officialito P’ scalloped jacquard tassel detail loafers. Richard isn’t know for taking major fashion risks like Billy Porter, Timothee Chalamet, and even Eddie Redmayne I do think that this look fits in with his style and would add the perfect look for him to deliver on the Emmy Awards red carpet.
The 2019 Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday September 22, 2019.
I have been watching the Spring 2020 Menswear collection runways closely over the last several weeks from New York to London to Florence to Milan to Paris. Has it been by favorite season? No. Not in the least. When I do these several week long lists of favorites I usually have a hard time editing them down to just 10 because there are too many options. While there were jackets, shirts, pants, shoes, and more that I liked on an individual level that I liked overall looks were not up to the same standards that designers have set over the last several seasons. When it comes to menswear on the red carpet many stars wear custom made more classic styles than what typically come down a runway, but there are 10 looks I definitely want to see on the red carpet. Alexander McQueen: I miss seeing Alexander McQueen menswear on the red carpet. The brands creative director Sarah Burton has decided this year to show her menswear collection in private appointments releasing a lookbook of the collection to media sites like Vogue.com and WWD. The Alexander McQueen Spring 2020 Menswear lookbook only consisted of 9 looks. I wanted every single piece. The inner magpie in me was immediately drawn to this black tuxedo which features an intricate crystal embellished embroidery. I have lauded Darren Criss lately for really embracing his inner magpie and I definitely believe that he would be able to make this look a major moment on the red carpet. Maybe for the Emmy’s?
Celine: I have been eating my words of hate about Heidi Slimane at Celine. I personally wanted almost every jacket and coat that Heidi sent down the Paris Fashion Week runway for the Celine Spring 2020 Menswear collection. What I did notice was that it was a lot of the same styles, even in the same colors and details, that he sent down the runway at Saint Laurent. Now menswear doesn’t have the same diversity of style that womenswear does, but I want to see Heidi try something new. But I know that isn’t going to happen because he definitely lives by the if it ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality. I actually have several options from this collection that I want to see on the red carpet, but it was the fact that this ensemble which features a chocolate leather trucker jacket, black and white polka dotted button down, and dark grey pinstripe pants made me think of Brad Pitt I knew it was the one to feature on this list. The fact that a runway look made me think of someone who I do not think of when creating wish lists at all proves that Heidi Slimane’s Celine is a magical brand. Dior Man: Since his debut last June Kim Jones has been killing the game at Dior Man. He has taken the classic code of the Dior man and made him modern. The way he incorporates not only classic menswear, but also the more feminine codes of original Christian Dior womenswear is brilliant. It makes me want to see what he would do as the womenswear creative director. Literally when I see the brand on the likes of Gwendoline Christie, Bella Hadid, and Chloe Grace Moretz wearing the brand just as easily as Nicholas Hoult, Nick Jonas, and A$AP Rocky I feel like he could bring major hype and sales back to the Dior label. The Dior Man Spring 2020 Menswear show opened strong with this dove grey and powder blue new take on the Morning Suit which features an asymmetrical lapel paired with an untucked button down, slim fit pants, and matching sneakers and I was sold from the get go. The look needs someone with an effortless cool to make it really come to life on the red carpet and that is why I think Timothee Chalamet is the perfect person to put this look on his rack. He does have the promo tour for Little Women coming up.
Dries Van Noten: One of my favorite designers, for both womenswear and menswear, is Dries Van Noten. He is a master of print, embellishment, cut, draping, fabrication, and styling. His shows are always a visual feast. He doesn’t go for big theatrics when it comes to his shows letting the clothes speak for themselves. I tend to think he is one of the more underrated designers and one of the least utilized on the red carpet with the most potential. I personally want many pieces of this collection for my wardrobe. I LOVE this grey plaid double breasted suit which was paired with a green floral print button down. It would want to wear this for a great dinner date or to one of my more dressed up days of work. I also think that it would be a great option for Eddie Redmayne to consider as he and his stylist start planning looks for fall film festival season where he is expected to be promoting The Aeronauts. Emporio Armani: When it comes to any Armani collection, save for the Prive shows, you have to wade through a lot of the same before you find the 2-4 pieces that really stand out. That was no different with this Emporio Armani Spring 2020 Menswear show, which almost reached 100 looks. When I think of the Armani man I think of classic and perfectly tailored which is why I always scratch my head at the brands runway shows which typically feature more of a loose fit look than what we see from the brand when sold or worn. There is a bit of a disconnect, in my mind at least. But like I said there are typically a small number of pieces that I end up drawn to this navy double breasted tuxedo jacket which features pixelated chevron embroidery. This is the style of look I expect from Armani and Henry Golding, who does classic with a twist in the best way, would rock it. Now I would leave the satin pants from the runway at home in favor of something a little more classic and fitted.
Givenchy: This season Givenchy creative director Clare Waight Keller decided to do things a little differently. First she decided to host her first solo menswear show. Since she took the reigns of Givenchy over almost 2 years ago she has shown her menswear mostly along side her womenswear on the runway adding a lookbook for each season to show additional looks. She also decided this season to leave the brand usual perch during Paris Fashion Week to be a centerpiece show during Florence’s Pitti Uomo fashion celebration. Like almost all the collections this season this one was full of pieces I loved. This was the only show I got to watch on a livestream this season and when I saw this black and silver sequined coat I let out a bit of a gay gasp and got some major wardrobe envy. It is a statement piece and I definitely want to see it on a red carpet at some point. Chadwick Boseman has many projects coming out and given the fact he is a great friend to the house of Givenchy I feel like it isn’t a stretch to wish to see him bring this coat to life.GmbH: There are always so many shows during each season it is hard for me to look through all of them. If it isn’t a top label brand, like any of the other brands on this list, then it needs a good preview look on Vogue Runway. Well Berlin based brand GmbH did just that. The brands tailored coats that came down the Spring 2020 Menswear runway during Paris Fashion Week. The brand has shown collections for several seasons, but this was the first I was drawn to click on the collection and actually inspect the clothes that have come down the runway. There were definitely many things that I was drawn to, but when I pick looks for this kind of list it is the ones whom I immediately see someone wearing the look that ultimately make the list. They might not be something of my particular personal taste. That is the case with this look which features a loose fit white button down paired with high waisted gold chainmail loose fit pants which I immediately pictured on Miguel.
Saint Laurent: Like Clare Waight Keller this season Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello decided to forgo the brands typical seat on the Paris Fashion Week schedule to show his Spring 2020 Menswear show on a Malibu, California beach. The collection was very much what we have come to expect from Saint Laurent. I feel that while Anthony was the perfect choice to pick up where Heidi Slimane left off that now that Heidi is back, and in a major way, I want to see something new from Anthony at Saint Laurent. What is Anthony’s take? That is what I want to know. That being said this collection was incredibly good. It was full of looks that were red carpet ready and that can easily transfer from the runway and red carpet to inside of someone’s closet (is anyone from YSL is reading this and wants to send me samples to add to my wardrobe I am game!). Rami Malek has been a great friend to Saint Laurent this year including being a guest of the label to this years Met Gala so he was already on my mind when I was looking through this collection and really popped into my mind when I saw this white double breasted skinny suit paired with a black button down and a crystal studded silk ascot. Valentino: My heart has gone to Pierpaolo Piccioli’s collections for Valentino since he became the solo creative director for the band. The looks have definitely veered away from the suit and tie kind of vibe that the brand was known for under the houses eponymous founder to more of a street wear and every day wearable label. That was most evident this season. The looks that Pierpaolo sent down the runway for the Valentino Spring 2020 Menswear show. He started the show strong giving me my favorite look from the collection with this orange and purple bowling baggy fit bowling shirt and a baggy high waisted pant with a tapered ankle. I want to be this cool. I don’t typically like much of an oversized vibe, especially not for myself, but I want to wear this while going grocery shopping. I feel like I might have to fight Aladdin star Mena Massoud for this look though.
Versace: Donatella Versace referenced The Prodigy and the bands late front man (and friend of hers) Keith Flint as the source of inspiration for the Versace Spring 2020 Menswear collection. It was a bit of 80’s rock and roll meets 90’s grunge meets punk and Versace glam. I believe that the collection will definitely be a hit with the music set like MIGOS, Kanye, and Nick Jonas, but it was Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller that came to mind when I was thinking of the perfect person to wear this solid black and grey plaid Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde double breasted fitted suit. I saw this suit and immediately fell in love. I want it in my closet and I am sure that someone over the course of the next several months will bring it to life on the red carpet.
So tell me what was your favorite look or collection from the Spring 2020 Menswear season? Is there someone you want to see wearing one of these looks? Don’t be afraid to leave a comment with your thoughts!
I have so many wishes to make for this years Screen Actors Guild Awards. But as I am waiting for the couture collections to come out next week I didn’t want to go through two or three posts worth of wishes in a day like I did with the Golden Globe Awards. That happens almost every year with the SAG Awards. I wait until the last possible minute to start my wishes because I want as many of them to be filled with the hot new things. That’s why you might feel like there is more menswear on the wishes for the next few days. Menswear shows are just getting ready to wrap up and so I have all kinds of hot new things for the men to wear, but women also feature in these wishes too. Darren Criss has swept awards season taking home the Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award for his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. He has been serving interesting sartorial choices at each of those awards shows. It was embellished Emporio Armani at the Emmy Awards, floral Dior Man at the Golden Globes, and casual “Miami Vice” chic in Giorgio Armani for the Critics Choice Awards. The SAG Awards is the final stop on the awards train for Darren where I would say he is the favorite to sweep all the major awards shows by taking home the Actor trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie. I would love to see Darren do so in high style wearing this black and dusty burgundy gingham plaid Ermenegildo Zegna Fall 2019 Menswear double breasted suit which features abstract shiny pattern all over the jacket and slim fit pants. It is one of the best suits of all of the new menswear collections and it is that perfect mix of extra and casualness to be a perfect choice for the SAG Awards red carpet. Would Darren wear the suit as presented on the runway with a matching dusty burgundy tonal collar t-shirt for the SAG Awards? His Critics Choice look says he might. I would personally want to see a custom dusty burgundy button down collard shirt adding a slim black silk skinny tie. A pair of black leather and burgundy quilted velvet Louis Leeman lace up derbies would add the perfect finishing touch to this ensemble. Elisabeth Moss tends to pick short black dresses for the red carpet, and that is exactly what I am expecting from her next Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale. I stuck to the color black, but I went a different style route opting for this black Givenchy Pre-Fall 2019 pants ensemble which features a long sleeve pleated top with a v-neck, asymmetrical hem, and a draped bow and a pair of matching slim fir cropped pants for her to wear for this red carpet. I really do want to see Lizzy give us something a little different on this red carpet and I believe that this pants look is the right change of pace to be a breath of fresh air. A wavy bob, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black Gianvito Rossi ‘Rea’ crystal embellished mesh pointed toe pumps, and statement Butani diamond and emerald earrings would all make this an absolutely beautiful moment for Elisabeth to deliver on this red carpet. The fifth season of Grace and Frankie dropped on Netflix today so you know that is what I will be watching all weekend as I write more and more of my 2019 SAG Awards wishes. I adore Jane Fonda and her role in the series has earned her another SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. She hasn’t actually attended any of the previous SAG Awards where she has been nominated for the series, but with the new season being so fresh I could see Netflix wanting to see her keep up appearances and walk the red carpet this year. I thought about waiting for a couture gown for Jane to wear on this years red carpet, but then I saw this Zuhair Murad Pre-Fall 2019 ensemble which features an intricately beaded gold bodice with a v-neckline and fringe details and a pair of black flared front seam pants. The more laid back vibe of the SAG Awards I think would allow for Jane to really make this look work. A black Roger Vivier ‘Club Chain’ gold buckle and tassel detail clutch, her signature hairstyle, smokey eyes, soft nude lips, a pair of black and gold Roger Vivier ‘Choc Real Onda Passementeie’ pumps, and a statement Bulgari High Jewelry ‘Parentesi’ gold and pave diamond collar necklace would make this the perfect look for Jane to wear on her first SAG Awards red carpet. Michelle Yeoh has been giving chic looks all awards season, but I haven’t been truly wowed. My favorite look so far this awards season was the one shoulder red Marchesa gown that she wore for the Critics Choice Awards. I think that the cast of Crazy Rich Asians has a real shot taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture trophies. I want to see Michelle bring her absolute a-game to the red carpet. She knows how to bring major couture to the red carpet and defies what society says a 56 year old woman should wear on the red carpet. That is why I picked this nude Roberto Cavalli Couture gown which features spaghetti straps, a fully beaded bodice, and a feathered mermaid hem for her to deliver on this red carpet. This glamorous gown is definitely something I think Michelle would wear. She might ask for a matching beaded sheer shawl to be paired with this gown, but I love it just as it was presented. I think that with old Hollywood waves, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of gold Salvatore Ferragamo ‘Zeri’ bow detail metallic leather pointed toe pumps, and lotus cut Chopard Red Carpet Collection yellow diamond chandelier earrings would all add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble. Penelope Cruz shocked me when she opted for a Ralph & Russo Couture ballgown on the Golden Globe Awards red carpet over one from Chanel. I would have expected the current face of Chanel to wear Chanel for the first major red carpet of awards season, but that didn’t happen. I wonder if she will wear the brand for the SAG Awards? She could snatch a gown right off the Chanel Spring 2019 Couture runway next week, and I think that is probably what is going to happen. However I fell in love with the idea of seeing Penelope wearing this champagne gold Armani Prive Fall 2018 Couture strapless fully beaded column gown so I wanted to keep that as my wish and not wait for anything new from Chanel. This simple gown is perfect for Penelope who knows how to deliver classic glamour with ease on the red carpet. I think that while the gown gives distinct 90’s vibes that a sleek 50’s inspired updo, smokey eyes, red lips, a vintage gold Chanel box clutch minaudiere, gold Christian Louboutin ‘New Very Prive’ peep toe pumps, and a pair of vintage Cartier diamond and emerald pendant earrings would all ensure this look is perfect head to toe. I was expecting really major things from Rami Malek this awards season, but aside from a red Berluti suit I have been rather disappointed. He has fallen in the winners track rut picking just wearing safe menswear options for the red carpet. Has the fit on all of his looks, mostly from Givenchy, been on point? Yes. But perfect tailoring is only one part of what I love about Rami’s typical styling. I decided to stay on the safer side with my wish for him to wear on the red carpet at the SAG Awards next weekend, but still push the boundaries of menswear. I love this black prismatic checkerboard pattern Emporio Armani Fall 2019 Menswear tuxedo and I think that it would still be considered a rather ‘safe’ option, but still be one of the more statement menswear moments on the SAG Awards red carpet. The pattern changes depending on the way that the light catches it. I think that a pair of black patent leather boots, a crisp white tuxedo shirt, and a black bow tie would all make this a very chic menswear moment on this red carpet.
The 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on Sunday January 27, 2019.
Before I get into my wishes for the first red carpet of the year, the Palm Springs International Film Festival Black Tie Awards Gala, I have some wishes for a red carpet that will take place after the Golden Globes. The National Board of Review Awards are handed out in January, but to honorees that are announced in early December. The red carpet is usually full of big stars and with many projects staring major names being honored I am expecting some absolutely stand out moments on this red carpet. The styles we see stars bring to life for this event go from cocktail to formal. It isn’t necessarily the place we see couture gowns, but always stars bring their a-game to this stop on the race to the Oscars. While Black Panther might not be lauded with any individual awards at the 2019 National Board of Review Awards it was named one of the top 10 films of 2018. What does that mean for the film on this red carpet? I’m not sure. I would bet that, at least, one person from the cast is on this red carpet to represent the film in its Oscar campaign. It would make sense that it would be the black panther himself, Chadwick Boseman. He has been loving coat style jackets on the red carpet lately, but for the National Board of Review Awards I am turning to this blue-ish silver Emporio Armani Spring 2019 Menswear metallic fiber double breasted suit jacket for him. It was almost a year ago when Chadwick kicked off the promo tour for Black Panther wearing a printed Emporio Armani suit jacket for the films premiere in LA, and I would expect that he will wear the label at least once over the course of awards season this year. This red carpet being a little more laid back I think that this jacket paired with slim fit black pants, a white button down buttoned all the way up, no tie, and a pair of dark silver Christian Louboutin ‘Dandelion’ chevron gauffre loafers would all ensure that Chadwick owns menswear on this red carpet. Of course while just seeing Chadwick promoting Black Panther on this red carpet I would love to see any of the female co-stars of this film also bring their glam to this red carpet. Danai Gurira has long been one of my favorite ladies on the red carpet so of course I want to see her on the red carpets as often as possible. If she chooses to attend the National Board of Review Awards I decided I wanted to go for a major cocktail moment picking this black and white Givenchy Pre-Fall 2019 cocktail ensemble for her to bring to life on this red carpet. I love the polka dot embroidered sleeveless ruffled bodice which is complimented very simple with a black mini skirt and I really do believe that Danai has the chops to really push through all of those ruffles to make it a major moment on this red carpet especially when paired with a high bun, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of black Gianvito Rossi strappy suede sandals with pearl stud details. Letitia Wright came a long way in her style journey last year. I almost forgot she was part of the cast because when she was promoting Black Panther last year her looks really just faded into the background. It was after that tour and heading into the one for Avengers: Infinity War that we really started to see Letitia’s style start to soar. I, like Danai, decided to go the cocktail route for Letitia opting for this brown Michael Kors Pre-Fall 2019 feather embellished peplum dress for the red carpet at the National Board of Review Awards. This dress is definitely not for the faint of fashion hearted, but I really do believe that the Letitia that walked red carpets at the end of last year has the confidence and presence to really work through this look on the red carpet. Add a sleek hairstyle tucked behind the ears, defined eyes, nude lips, an antique gold Bottega Veneta pearl chain knot clutch, and a pair of black Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudistsong’ sandals would all compliment this dress perfectly ensuring that Letitia has a major style moment on this red carpet. Of all the stars in the cast of Black Panther I think that Lupita Nyong’o would be the one to really bring some major fashion moment to this red carpet. I decided to go for a gown for her over something short with this very visual Chanel Pre-Fall 2019 sleeveless gown which features an intricate Egyptian inspired print on the bodice and hemline, black blocking and this metallic gold leather trimming. This is definitely a gown that would take the right person to take it on to be a really chic moment on the red carpet, and I think that Lupita definitely has the regality to make sure that this gown is a major moment on this red carpet. I love when Lupita takes style risks on the red carpet and I know that this is definitely one of the riskier gowns from this collection because of the print but that Lupita has that presence to really push through this look. An intricate twist updo with gold bands (instead of white like in the inspiration pic,) defined eyes, glossy deep red lips, and a pair of gold Aquazzura ‘Oscar’ metallic leather strappy sandals would all ensure this look is perfection from head to toe. Kiki Layne stars in If Beale Street Could Talk which is being lauded by the National Board of Review as one of the 10 Best Films of 2018. Kiki might not have any nominations, or honors, for her performance in the film, but I am expecting that she will be making the rounds to help promote the film. Kiki pretty much came out of nowhere this year to be one of my favorite style stars of 2019, and I am really excited to see what she has in store for 2019. For the National Board of Review Awards I turned to one of the hottest new brands out there right now, Pyer Moss and this incredible goldenrod yellow curtain draped silk gown which features a one-shoulder silhouette and asymmetric hemline. I love the color of this gown and it just has the right balance of ease and glamour for a guest of a film to wear on the red carpet at the National Board of Review Awards. The gown itself is such a statement because of the color that I think with a bold braided updo, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of gold Pedro Garcia ‘Rosalina’ crystal embellished sandals, and a pair of vintage 80’s diamond and precious topaz ear clips from Beladora that this would be an absolutely major moment for Kiki to bring to the red carpet during awards season. Regina King is getting nomination after nomination and honor after honor and I am having the hardest time picking looks for her to rock on the red carpet. I go back and forth with looks for every red carpet. I think I went through six or seven looks before I decided on this black Marchesa one shoulder metallic gold foil print tea length gown which features a cinched waist, an a-line shape skirt, and a draped bodice for her to wear for the National Board of Review Awards, where she is being honored with the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. I wanted something very glamorous, flirty, and feminine for Regina on this red carpet and while I might have picked a really bold gown for her co-star, who isn’t being honored, I think that this is the perfect moment for Regina to bring to life on this red carpet. A black Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ crocodile pattern stamped satin clutch, gold Aquazzura ‘Studio’ sequin detail strappy sandals, a sleek updo, smokey eyes, red lips, and a pair of chic yellow gold set Anita Ko ‘Snowflake’ diamond cluster earrings would all ensure that Regina is on the right track to deliver a major run this awards season.
The 2019 National Board of Review Awards will take place on Tuesday January 8, 2019.
Milan Fashion Week ended almost two and a half weeks ago, but I have just been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to get my 15 favorite looks that I want to see on the red carpet list out there. These posts take a lot of time not just because I have to go through all of the collections and narrow down all the looks down to just 15 but have to research the collections and then pick who I want to see wearing the looks on the red carpet. Over the course of Milan Fashion Week I saved over 350 looks that I think have red carpet potential. These looks cover everything from major gowns to cocktail moments to chic casual looks for press events to edgy performance looks. I went through all of those collections and narrowed them down to the following 15. These are the looks from Milan Fashion Week – Spring 2019 that I want to see on a red carpet.Attico: One of the brands that I have loved watching grow over the last year is Attico. It is one of the chicest, very Italian brands who deliver very wearable glamour in their collections. For Spring 2019 RTW the collection was a major love letter to the 80’s and I definitely think we will see many looks from he collection on the red carpet. Over the last year stars have really embraced the brand for cocktail and press appearances. In fact Olga Kurylenko has already brought a feathered buster and leather cargo pants ensemble from the brands Spring 2019 RTW collection to life for the London premiere of Jenny English Strikes Again. I went for more a simple look from this collection for Jennifer Lopez with this lilac and orange creamsicle fluid pois jacquard ‘Pat’ dress which features puff shoulders, faux wrap style, a v-neckline, a tie detail at waist, and embellished shoulder details. This dress is very chic and wearable and if JLo rocked this for a press stop during her upcoming movie promo tour I think it would be perfection.
Dolce & Gabbana: In the wake of Stefano Gabbana calling Selena Gomez, whom Dolce & Gabbana had dressed several times over the years, ugly it seemed like the Time’s Up movement was going to really push a boycott of the brand. However since the brand is such a fashion powerhouse I don’t think is going to stop stars from wearing the brand on the red carpet. In fact Cardi B just wore a dramatic gown from this collection on the red carpet at the American Music Awards. Aside from that Domenico & Stefano showed a collection that really embraced all of the codes that they have infused into the brands DNA over the last 33 years. The show was a celebration of women, a diverse group of women. There were women of different sizes, every color, and many age groups. It was actually really beautiful. The moment I saw this blue and natural sleeveless mixed-fringe midi dress which features contrasting rows of fringe and tassels throughout, a midi length, and a column silhouette I pictured it being rocked by Amal Clooney as she is spotted headed out on a date night with George.
Emporio Armani: I usually wouldn’t pay much attention to Emporio Armani, but with bold colors and sparkling embellishments my inner magpie was drawn to this collection. This faction of the Armani brand is usually geared towards a younger crowd and I really think that there are quite a few looks that young Hollywood stars will want to fight over. I think that if anyone could really make this electric lime green and royal blue strapless jumpsuit which features intricate sequin and feathered embroidery and I definitely think it would be Halsey.Ermanno Scervino: When you look at an Ermanno Scervino collection you know you are going to get two things volume and glamour. The brand is known for those and doesn’t veer from that very often. While you don’t get boundary pushing designs like you can find at other Milan based brands like Marni, Prada, or Gucci you know that there will be great red carpet options from Ermanno Scervino. Orange is a huge trend for Spring 2019 RTW and I think that Jasmine Sanders would be the perfect person to bring this Ermanno Scervino Spring 2019 RTW orange tea length gown which features a strapless sweetheart neckline and dramatic ruffles offering of the trend to life on the red carpet.
Etro: While Etro is a very successful brand when it comes to sales they don’t often get a whole lot of red carpet love. The brand, known for bold eccentric prints, doesn’t focus on celebrities to influence sales likes some other brands so when they do end up on a red carpet I get very excited. There aren’t a whole lot of looks from the Etro Spring 2019 RTW collection that I think could be red carpet looks, but this black white and yellow floral print one shoulder gown is definitely one that I think could be really chic. I think that if anyone could really make this look work, probably on one of the more causal party red carpets, it would be supermodel turned actress Suki Waterhouse.
Fausto Puglisi: In an off season from showing a runway show Fausto Puglisi showed an 80’s Flashdance inspired collection in a presentation/lookbook. The collection was very much repetitive, but it is definitely something that I think many music stars will be drawn to. While I typically pick red carpet looks for this list it was this cape meets letterman jacket and color blocked swimsuit that really spoke to me from this collection. I immediately pictured Rita Ora rocking this look for one of her many performances. Giorgio Armani: I wasn’t thrilled with the Giorgio Armani Spring 2019 RTW. I was hoping for really amazing things, but I was rather underwhelmed with what Mr. Armani sent down the runway. The fit of the collection overall was terrible and the color palette reminded me of a Dixie disposable cup. I do however want to thee this Monet ‘Waterlilies’ inspired print beaded fringe cap sleeve jumpsuit which features a plunging v-neckline, and cutout sides and back on the red carpet and wouldn’t supermodel Karolina Kurkova just really deliver this look with ease on the red carpet?
Marni: Marni is one of the rarest brands on this list to see on the red carpet. It used to be a favorite of Anna Wintour, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Carey Mulligan. It had a hit H&M collaboration. But we don’t often see the brand on the red carpet anymore. I will say there weren’t too many looks from the Spring 2019 RTW collection that I think have what it takes to make a really chic red carpet moment (plenty of items that can be incorporated into your personal wardrobe though,) but this neutral canvas sleeveless midi dress which features a ruched exaggerated waist, a gathered a-line skirt, and blue hand-painted floral detail throughout made Keira Knightley pop into my mind. It could be a really chic press look while she is out promoting The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
Missoni: In the last year we have seen a revitalized celebrity love of Milan based knitwear brand Missoni on the red carpet. The brand has been back to more creative looks than just reinventing its signature multicolored zig zag print over and over again. It’s almost like the brand has gone through a bit of a renaissance again. While incredibly easy to wear knits were the focus of the brands Spring 2019 RTW collection there were a handful of looks that I could definitely see celebrity stylists vying to get their hands on. One of those looks was this slate blue sheer halter gown which features layers of metallic knit layers. This is a very easy glam moment and the moment I saw it I immediately thought it would be something that Zoe Saldana would be drawn to. Moschino: There was a bit of controversy surrounding Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2019 Collection for Moschino. Edda Gimnes, a Norwegian womenswear designer based in London, accused Scott to taking un-credited inspiration from one of her collections that heavily featured a marker print as did this collection, but I have to say that the kitschy (campy) spirit of this print is something that has been in the Moschino archive for many years. He gave several examples of this technique in his defense including a Moschino ad campaign from 1986 and a jacket (similar to the one shown above) shown in the Moschino Spring 1992 collection. I loved the major artist doodle pad meets Pretty Woman vibe that was given in this collection. Jeremy is one of the masters, and I definitely think that the MET Museum picked wrong in its choice of designer co-chairs for next years MET Gala. The show started strong with the black and white trompe-l’œil print crepe suit which features a bow front blazer and a pair of tapered pants and just continued to deliver hit look after hit look. I was taken with that suit because it seemed to be the perfect meshing of the brands signature camp and a sense of wearability and I definitely think that it is something that Evan Rachel Wood would rock on a red carpet. No one does a suit on a red carpet quite like ERW.
No. 21: Every season I always find one look from No. 21 to feature on my lists. I love the brand. From the chic clothing it creates to amazing iconic accessories I just think that the brand exudes wearable glamour. I also feel like the brand is totally underrated when it comes to the red carpet. It has attracted the likes of Constance Wu, Dakota Fanning, Diane Kruger, and Jessica Chastain in the last year or so. I want to see stars snatch up looks from the Spring 2019 RTW collection including this sequin fringe ‘Anne’ dress features a sleeveless knit dress underneath an embellished outer layer with a fitted silhouette which I definitely think Amber Heard should snatch up for press appearances for Aquaman.
Roberto Cavalli: I was less than impressed with Paul Surridge’s debut as the Roberto Cavalli creative director a year ago. He just didn’t seem to have that same sense of sex and flash that is at the core of the Cavalli DNA, but considering some of the couture gowns he’s created for Olivia Wilde, Sara Sampaio, Joan Smalls, and Alessandra Ambrosio in addition to his Resort 2019 collection I think that he could have a place at the house, he just has a steep learning curve to live up to the likes of Mr. Cavalli himself and even former creative director Peter Dundas. I do believe that he did a better job of balancing his tailoring experience with the hyper sexuality of the Cavalli woman this season. I actually want to see several of the looks from this collection on the red carpet and I definitely think that Olivia Wilde would take this terracotta colored long sleeve midi dress which features a sheer long sleeve beaded bodice with a plunging neckline and a ruched a-line midi skirt and make it a really chic red carpet moment. Is it the sexy mini dresses that Surridge also presented in this collection? No, but I still think that it defines the Cavalli woman. Salvatore Ferragamo: Like the new Cavalli creative director I was less than enthused with Paul Andrew’s (the shoe designer whose eponymous line I LOVE) debut at Salvatore Ferragamo back in February, but now he has had a look on both my Best of Resort 2019 and my Best of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2019 lists. The collections have gotten stronger and stronger. There were several looks from his newest collection that I think are destined for casual events like press interviews and then gowns that are perfect for gala’s. I think that for one of the more edgier, “artistic” galas that Olivia Munn would rock this suede macramé dress layered over indocina silk slip dress features a sleeveless body with a straight, fitted silhouette and full length with fringe hem. It is edgy and glamorous and I definitely think with her inherent sex appeal that Olivia radiates on the red carpet would really ensure this look is perfection.
Sportmax: I don’t usually bother looking at Sportmax collection typically. The looks that the brand send down the runway aren’t typically what I feature here on If I Was A Stylist, but something told me to check out this seasons collection. I’m glad I did. The brand had more of a dazzling air to it this season compared to the more day to day sportswear vibe we typically see from the brand. I fell in love with this silver and blue ‘Ciriaco’ dress designed with slits on both sides, sequin detailing throughout, a haltered neckline, and a midi length hem the moment I saw it. Is it anything really innovative or boundary pushing when it comes to style? No, but it is just a fun dazzling party look that I think would be perfect for Tiffany Haddish.
Vionnet: Finishing out this list is the always beautiful Vionnet. The label established in 1912 and revitalized in 2009 has been one of the brands that I feel is very underrated. When it first relaunched it was a celeb favorite, but in recent years that love has waned. I want to see the brand, which has been working at becoming a leader in sustainable luxury, have a resurgence as a celebrity favorite. It isn’t one of the edgy boundary pushing labels that we typically see on the fashion week circuit, but I think that the glamorous draping is perfect for the red carpet. It has been a hot minute but Naomie Harris was a fan of Vionnet and I definitely think that she would be the perfect person to bring this beige and hot pink tulle draped gown which features a silver waistband, plunging v-neckline, and a sheer skirt to life on a red carpet.
So there you have it my 15 favorite looks that came down the Milan Fashion Week runways for Spring 2019 RTW. Which ones do you want to see on the red carpet and who do you want to see bring it to life?
I don’t know why but I have never featured any wishes for the San Diego Comic-Con on this blog before. The biggest names in sci-fi movies and television descend upon what is known as ‘Nerd Mecca’ to promote their latest projects. The stars bring the casual glamour to the panels and parties of the convention and I always look forward to seeing what they will bring. We have seen stars bring Monse, Prabal Gurung, Marco De Vincenzo, Elie Saab, Reem Acra, Mugler, Rodarte, and more over the course of previous panels and I am really excited to see what the stars will bring this year. With Aquaman set to premiere in December it would really surprise me to see the cast not do a panel at Comic-Con this year. I adore Amber Heard and her style and ever since she started working with power stylist Karla Welch she has really been hitting it out of the fashion ballpark. For the Aquaman panel I would love to see Amber give easy chic wearing this black Adam Lippes Resort 2019 ensemble which features a sleeveless shell top, cropped boot cut pants, and a floral print chiffon peasant style blouse. I don’t think that we see enough of Adam’s work on the red carpet and I do think that a look like this would be perfect for comic con especially when paired with a chic ponytail, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of red Salvatore Ferragamo ‘Peony’ bow detail slingback mid heel pumps. I don’t know if any of Disney’s projects will be at Comic-Con, but I would love to see Emily Blunt out at the convention to promote her upcoming film Mary Poppins Returns. She will take on the iconic character famously played by Julie Andrews in the film which will debut in December. Emily always brings a bit of elevated glamour to even the most casual of events. I would love to see her take to Comic-Con wearing this white Brock Collection Resort 2019 cotton dress which features a deep V-neckline, tiered skirt, belted waist, and short sleeves. This is the chic moment that I know that Emily could deliver so effortlessly on a Comic-Con red carpet especially when paired with loose waves, simple makeup, and a pair of white Casadei ruffled sandals. Karen Gillan just came off the premiere tour for Avengers: Infinity War and the next installment of the film series is expected next year and I would guess that some of the films stars will descend on Comic-Con to tease the film. Karen has been lovely on the red carpets giving many major moments. I wouldn’t expect her to deliver a major Best Dressed of the Year moment on the red carpet at Comic Con, but this chic Valentino Resort 2019 ensemble would be perfect. The blue and white striped long sleeve button down paired with the navy embroidered wrap style miniskirt. The look is that effortlessly chic moment that is perfect for a Comic-Con red carpet. A pair of navy metallic leather Jimmy Choo ‘Lane’ sandals, a loose romantic updo, defined lined eyes, and red lips would add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble. I read somewhere that Game of Thrones isn’t going to be having a panel at Comic-Con this year despite major presence in previous years. I would love to see the show have a presence this year, especially as it campaigns for the 2018 Emmy’s. Maisie Williams is one of the underrated style stars of the Game of Thrones cast and I would love to see what she could bring to Comic-Con. You might be wondering why I have two looks for Maisie while I only have one for everyone else on this list. Well that is because she could have two projects to promote. Game of Thrones obviously and then The New Mutants whose release was pushed back to August of next year. The movie was supposed to be released earlier this year but was pushed. The film very well could be saved for next years Comic-Con, but I think why not both? The first look I would like to see Maisie bring to the events at Comic-Con is this purple, white, and orange chevron stripe Emporio Armani Resort 2019 sleeveless shift dress. It is nothing revolutionary in style or pattern, but I think that if anyone could make it a chic moment it would be Maisie. The dress should be paired with blue Schutz ankle strap sandals, a sleek bun, defined eyes, and orange lips to really make it a chic moment. The other look I would love to see Maisie wear is just as flirty and chic but in a different way with this Self-Portrait ensemble which features a white circle floral cotton voile eyelet lace ruffled top and a pair of grey plaid check high waisted trousers. I think that it would be an incredibly chic moment for her to bring to this event. I would add a pop of color to this look via a pair of rust red satin Sies Marjan sculpted heel pumps. Easy curls, simple eyes, and a rust red lip would add the perfect finishing touches to this look. Rounding out day one of my Comic-Con wishes is the gorgeous and sexy Olivia Munn who could be seen at this years event to promote her next film X-Men: Dark Phoenix. I was majorly disappointed with the fit of the dark green velvet Galvan jumpsuit that Olivia wore for the MTV Movie & Television Awards last month. I would love to see her give a modern Pretty Woman vibe at this years Comic-Con wearing this cognac brown polka dotted Veronica Beard Resort 2019 one sleeve cocktail dress which features an asymmetrical ruffle and a belted waist. I do think that this chic yet sexy dress would be a perfect moment for Olivia to bring to Comic-Con especially when paired with chic waves, defined eyes, nude lips, and a pair of whiskey brown Saint Laurent ‘Majorelle’ leather sandals.
The 2018 San Diego Comic-Con will take place from July 19 to 22, 2018.
