The looks in today’s set of wishes are major. I always say the answer to picking the perfect Met Gala fashion moment is go big or go home. That is exactly what I did when picking the looks for Aja Naomi King, Naomi Scott, Lucy Liu, and Rowan Blanchard; oh and there is a super chic white tie moment for Henry Golding. Each of these looks is perfectly indicative of each label and all would be superb moments to see on this years red carpet. Aja Naomi King made her Met Gala debut in 2016, but hasn’t been on the red carpet since. Now she is a L’Oreal Paris spokesmodel and I feel like it’s about time she got her second appearance on the famed Met steps. What kills me about Aja on the red carpet is the fact that I know she has so much potential, but rarely lives up to it. For this years Met Gala red carpet I want to see Aja turn to Christopher John Rogers. I really want to see the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner deliver major moments on the Met steps this year. For Aja I would love to see Christopher create a custom gown that is a hybrid of two looks from the Christopher John Rogers Fall 2020 RTW collection. Taking the red lamé asymmetrical peplum cocktail dress which features a plunging neckline and layering it over the black and silver crystal embellished column skirt from the strapless column gown. Each look on their own isn’t right for the Met Gala red carpet, but combined I know this look would be superb. A chignon afro puff updo, smokey eyes with a hint of emerald, dark rose pink lips, a pair of black Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudistsong Stardust’ crystal embellished ankle strap sandals, and statement Amrapali emerald and white diamond teardrop pendant earrings would definitely make this a major moment for Aja to wear on the Met Gala red carpet. Henry Golding was introduced to us about 2 year ago now when he stared in the hit film Crazy Rich Asians back to back with the Blake Lively/Anna Kendrick drama A Simple Favor. He made his Met Gala red carpet debut last year taking a risk in custom Atelier Versace. It was a risk that almost paid off. I appreciate that Henry is willing to take some risks with fashion, but for this years Met Gala I decided I wanted to see him bring perfect classic glamour to this red carpet. This classic cut white tie Ralph Lauren Fall 2020 Menswear tailcoat tuxedo is the epitome of timeless elegance for menswear and when fitted perfectly the looks are one to take notice of. I definitely believe that Ralph would make sure this look is perfectly tailored for Henry. Now I would just add a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Greggo Orlatio’ paillette sequin embellished oxfords to add a subtle hint of dazzle to this look. Over the years Lucy Liu has only walked 2 Met Gala red carpets. That honestly surprises me as she is quite the fashionista. While we don’t see Lucy on the red carpets often when she does the looks are always top notch. In fact she has one of my favorite Met Gala red carpet moments ever thanks to the purple ruffled Zac Posen gown she wore in 2007. I would love to see her attend this year as a guest of Christian Siriano. Lucy wore Siriano for the Tony Awards last year and was seated front row at his Spring 2020 RTW show last September. Never one to shy away from drama for the red carpet I thought Lucy would be the perfect person to wear this crocodile skin pattern embroidered velvet ensemble from the Christian Siriano Fall 2020 RTW collection which includes a structured high neck capelet and a strapless corseted ball gown. The look is distinctly Siriano and a modern, edgy twist on the classic ballgown. It really do think that while Lucy is quite petite that she has the presence to make this look come to life on the red carpet. While the matching hat is quite interesting for the runway I would have Lucy ditch it for the red carpet instead opting to style the gown with a sleek side parted updo, thick defined eyes, bold red lips, black glitter Christian Louboutin ‘Renee’ strappy leather sandals, and a pair of statement David Webb ‘Asheville’ earclips made in cabochon turquoise, brilliant-cut diamonds, 18K gold, and platinum. This would definitely make for a statement making moment for Lucy to wear for her Met Gala return. Naomi Scott made her Met Gala debut last year ahead of her major promo tour for Aladdin. She wore a cool Burberry crystal chain and feather embellished tunic and sleek tailored pants. It was definitely one of the cooler looks of the evening, but when there were so many major gowns it faded into the masses. I don’t want that to happen to her this year. So I turned to the illustrious Richard Quinn, who is known for making dramatic moments happen. He dressed Naomi in black latex and blue floral jacquard for the Charlies Angels premiere in London last fall and for this years Met Gala I went back to his Spring 2019 RTW collection to seek inspiration for the perfect gown for Naomi to wear. I would love to see Naomi give us modern flapper vibes wearing a custom gown inspired by this ice blue silk cocktail dress which features silver beaded embroidery and black feather embellishments. Now picture it with me. Taking this dress and lengthening it to hit the floor with the feather embellishments on silk strips made to add a dramatic train to this gown would definitely make sure that Naomi delivers the drama on the red carpet. I would love to see Naomi take this custom gown and go full flapper with it styling the gown with a fingerwave updo, defined eyes, pink lips, a pair of black Nicholas Kirkwood ‘Monstera’ crystal embellished leaf sandals, and vintage 1930’s white diamond Bulgari art deco chandelier earrings. Rowan Blanchard has now hit the 18 year age requirement to attend the Met Gala. I have wanted to see the actress own this red carpet for a while. She isn’t afraid to take sartorial risks and I know that she would own this red carpet. I have been imagining her wearing this Schiaparelli Spring 2020 Couture ‘Grand Flou’ ball gown which features a multicolored “bathing suit” bustier, thin halter straps, and a huge shocking pink skirt in silk faille since it first came down the runway back in January. This gown can only work on a couple of red carpets and the Met Gala is one of those few red carpets where this look would work. While it isn’t really a “timeless” gown by any stretch of the imagination it does speak perfectly to the codes of the House of Schiaparelli. Finishing this look with a sleek retro inspired updo, defined eyes, pink lips, a pair of metallic pink Gucci chunky peep toe platform sandals, and white diamond Hueb ‘Luminus’ starburst cluster earrings would definitely make this a major Met Gala debut moment for Rowan.
I cannot believe we are here. Two weeks from this years Met Gala and my final set of wishes for this years red carpet. At the end of this list I will have picked 106 wishes for stars to rock on this years Met Gala red carpet and hopefully left all of my readers a little more informed on what ‘Camp’ style is. I had my own idea of what ‘Camp’ is when I picked all of the looks for this years wishes, but then when I started the journey of actually writing these lists I started reading “Notes on ‘Camp'” by Susan Sontag since it is what Costume Institute curator in charge Andrew Bolton used as the basis of the exhibit that became the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme of this years gala. Sontag says, “The whole point of Camp is to dethrone the serious. Camp is playful, anti-serious. More precisely, Camp involves a new, more complex relation to “the serious.” One can be serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious.” So I definitely want to see everyone take risks. Camila Mendes’ Riverdale co-stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse made their Met Gala debut last year, and this year I am hoping that Camila will get her turn on the red carpet for fashions biggest night. She has been heavily embraced by Prabal Gurung in the half year and since Prabal usually has quite the crew on the Met Gala red carpet I am hoping that he will give Camila her first Met Gala moment in a few weeks. When it comes to Prabal on the Met Gala red carpet he doesn’t usually send a girl up those famous Met steps wearing an off the runway gown. They are always custom gowns, or at least customized versions of runway looks. I figure that isn’t going to change, but if it does I definitely think that Camila would look oh so beautiful wearing this black, pink, and purple Prabal Gurung Fall 2019 RTW ‘Herrat’ embroidered tulle ballgown which is embellished with vibrant imagery throughout and features a deep V-neck and an A-line silhouette. This gown could be worn as presented and be absolutely beautiful, but it could also be the starting point for a custom gown that adds a dramatic train and feathers to really bring the ‘Camp’ aesthetic to this very pretty gown. I would style the gown, in whichever version, with a sleek updo, defined eyes, antique rose pink lips, a blush pink Judith Leiber Couture crystal embellished box clutch, a pair of simple black Jimmy Choo ‘Misty’ sandals, and a selection of Brumani jewels including a pair of blush pink amethyst, rose quartz, and diamond teardrop earrings and a matching cocktail ring to definitely make this an absolutely amazing moment for Camila to deliver for her Met Gala debut. At one point Anna Wintour had vowed that no Kardashian or Real Housewife of any city would be invited to the Met Gala. That started to change in 2013 when Kim Kardashian was knocked up by Kanye and Anna allowed the couple to attend that years punk themed gala. It was reported by Radar Online (a totally reliable source NOT!) that while Anna had warmed to Kim that the rest of the Kardashians and Real Housewives were still a no go. “Anna would never, ever allow a group of Real Housewives to rub shoulders with fashion’s elite,” a source told Radar Online. Well obviously since then Anna has warmed much more to the Kardashian Klan inviting Kris, Kendall, and Kylie to the event in years past. Well I am hoping this year is the year that Anna finally warms to the idea of inviting a Real Housewife. Erika Jayne is definitely in a class above a lot of the other ladies of the Real Housewives franchises. She brings high fashion to her life every day. She has been embraced by magazines including L’Official, Harper’s Bazaar, and CR Fashion Book and has even appeared on Vogue.com in digital content and so I am hoping that she is allowed to attend this years Met Gala, because she definitely knows ‘Camp.’ She wears a lot of Moschino and Jeremy Scott so when I was thinking of perfect guests for the eccentric designer to bring to this years Met Gala Erika was at the top of my list. It might be a long shot, but I am hopeful. So I messaged Evita and said I needed something major and gave her a general idea of what I wanted and she delivered. Erika Jayne’s custom Moschino gown is inspired by the brands Fall 2019 RTW and Spring 2015 RTW collections. The ‘Sparkly Pro Clean’ printed halter gown embellished with rock crystals and the sequin stars hails from the Fall 2019 RTW collection and the white organza ruffled train hails from the Spring 2015 RTW collection. All put together this gives that kitschy drama that Moschino is known for and I definitely think that Erika can serve the look up smokin’ hot. When Erika serves a look she commits. I want to see her really go for it adding a sleek ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ high ponytail, winged eyes, bright pink lips, long white gloves, a pair of silver, florescent yellow, and florescent pink Christian Louboutin ‘Lady Bug’ peep toe pumps, and a selection of Bayco ‘Magnificent’ collection diamond and sapphire jewels would definitely ensure that Erika owns the Met Gala red carpet. When Henry Golding first popped onto the fashion radar last year during the promo tour for Crazy Rich Asians wearing colored and textured Tom Ford tuxedos I had high expectations for what he would wear over the course of awards season. Unfortunately he ended up going the very classic black and white route most of awards season. I am PRAYING that if Anna Wintour invites him to this years Met Gala, which would be his first, that he embraces bold style. I think that this lilac BOSS Fall 2019 Menswear tuxedo is perfect for Henry to wear for this years Met as it is cut in the classic shape of a peak lapel tuxedo, but the color, and the differing fabrics of the collar, cuff, pocket line, and pants strip all add to the ‘Camp’ aesthetic of this look. Now I would add a classic white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, and a pair of simple black patent leather BOSS oxfords to make sure this look is still authentic to Henry’s style while still keeping with the theme. Letitia Wright gave me underwhelming looks all awards season and I am hoping that if she attends this years Met Gala that she will deliver something absolutely amazing. She loves herself a pants look on the red carpet so she is one of the few ladies whom I shunned a gown or cocktail dress in favor of red carpet lady pants for. I LOVE this Peter Pilotto Fall 2019 RTW one sleeved jumpsuit which features a metallic fiber orange and royal blue draped bodice with a single puffy sleeve and dark red satin fitted trousers and I definitely think that it fits the ‘Camp’ theme, but also stays true to Letitia’s personal style. Her signature short hair, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of gold metallic lizard print Jimmy Choo ‘Love’ pointed toe pumps, and Irene Neuwirth fire opal and diamond chandelier earrings would add the perfect finishing to this look.My final wish for this years Met Gala is for another newbie, Naomi Scott. She will be getting ready to kick off the promo tour for the much anticipated live action Aladdin and with the major Valentino moments she has been rocking lately I would imagine that if Naomi receives an invitation to this years gala that she will be part of the Valentino crew. I definite am obsessed with this royal blue Valentino Spring 2019 RTW ball gown which features ginormous sleeves, a scoop neckline, lots of ruffles, and a tiered ball skirt and I am hoping that Naomi is brave enough to take a risk and bring this gown to life on the Met Gala red carpet. Now honestly Naomi has a very petite frame so I wonder if there is too much volume here for her, but I think that she could power through it and make it seem effortless. I would make this look perfect for a Met Gala debut styling it with a sleek updo, navy smokey eyes, dark red lips, a pair of royal blue Tamara Mellon ‘Deco’ platform sandals, and a Bulgari High Jewelry ‘Serpenti’ diamond collar necklace with sapphire and emerald details.
I want to leave you with just one more quote from “Notes on ‘Camp'” to think about when we ultimately judge the looks that come down the Met Gala red carpet: “The ultimate Camp statement: it’s good because it’s awful . . . Of course, one can’t always say that. Only under certain conditions.”
The 2019 Met Gala will take place on the first Monday in May: May 6, 2019.
Today’s 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards wishes feature mostly wishes for members of the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture casts of Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther. Both of those casts have stars who really know how to bring the drama and glamour to the red carpet, but none earned their own individual nominations. I just hope that everyone in the cast the the SAG-AFTRA Foundation has included in the ensemble cast nominations is on the red carpet and Sunday night. Awkwafina was my favorite character in Crazy Rich Asians. I would love her see her get her own spin off film, or honestly a television series, based on that character. I never know what Awkwafina is going to wear on the red carpet to be honest. I haven’t quite been able to nail down her sense of style. I want to see her bring her best red carpet moment yet to the SAG Awards and I think that would be this gold lamé Lanvin column gown which features an asymmetrical draped bodice with cap sleeves and a v-neckline and an empire waist. Lamé can be a tricky fabric to wear on the red carpet. It isn’t very forgiving and it wrinkles super easy, but I honestly believe that Awkwafina would be able to make it work. I think that a gold Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ crystal embellished clutch, a loose pulled back updo, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of gold Jimmy Choo ‘Peachy’ platform sandals, and chic Hanut Singh ‘Shaded Pagoda’ green amethyst, ruby, diamond, and gold chain tassel drop earrings would all make this a perfect moment for Awkwafina to deliver on the SAG Awards red carpet this coming weekend. Constance Wu threw this list for a loop at the last minute. I was writing this post on Saturday night as I was refreshing photos from the Producers Guild of America Awards red carpet. I let out a guttural groan when I saw the head shot of Constance wearing her gold chevron beaded J. Mendel gown. Not because it wasn’t a chic moment, but because it was the gown that I was just about to put on this wish list for Constance to wear this coming Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. I had to go back to square one. I went back to my photo archive to look for another glamorous gown for Constance to wear on Sunday night at the SAG Awards. I saw this blush pink sequin Marchesa Pre-Fall 2019 mermaid gown which features a sweetheart strapless neckline, a an A-line silhouette, all over sequins, and black floral appliques and thought back to the fact that Constance’s character in Crazy Rich Asians had her ‘Cinderella’ moment in the movie wearing a Marchesa gown. I also remembered that the off the shoulder detail is actually a detachable shawl. I would remove that shawl detail as too much around the neck definitely tends to overwhelm Constance. I think that the strapless neckline is perfect for her. A chic updo, defined eyes, soft rose pink lips, a pair of black Sophia Webster ‘Andie’ bow detail strappy sandals, and Cartier diamond and onyx pendant drop earrings would all just make this an absolutely beautiful moment for Constance. The last member of the cast of Crazy Rich Asians that I have a wish for is the incredibly handsome Henry Golding. He made my Best Dressed Men of 2018 list in his ice blue Tom Ford shawl lapel tuxedo at the films premiere in LA, but he has been MIA all awards season so far leaving the celebration of the film to the ladies of the cast. I was counting on him to bring that extra sense of menswear dressing to the red carpet. I hope that since he is named member of the nominated cast that we will finally see Henry bring his glamour to the red carpet. I went back to Tom Ford and this just presented grey, blue, and black marble print shawl lapel tuxedo jacket from the designers just released Fall 2019 Menswear lookbook as the perfect thing for Henry to wear this weekend on the SAG Awards red carpet. I fell in love with these jackets immediately and I definitely think that Henry would bring a classic spin to it. I would imagine he would wear it with your standard white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, and black tuxedo pants. I would however add one more layer of extra with a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Ascot Boy’ patent leather and grosgrain bow detail loafers to really make this an eye popping moment for Henry to wear on this red carpet. I always get excited to see the cast of Black Panther on the red carpet. Each member of the cast always puts their best foot forward and brings drama and glamour to the red carpet. I was in love with Danai Gurira’s red and orange custom Rodarte one shoulder lace gown that she wore for the Golden Globe Awards. It was probably number 11 on my favorites list. I want to see Danai bring chic elegant glamour to the red carpet at the SAG Awards this weekend. I have always loved when Danai wears Giambattista Valli on the red carpet so picking this black strapless gown from the designers Fall 2018 Couture collection was an easy choice. I love the bow detail on the neckline, the cutout on the ruched bodice, and the pearl polka dotted embellishments. It gives a 21st century Audrey Hepburn vibe and I definitely think that Danai would be able to sell it to me with ease on the red carpet especially with a chic updo, smokey eyes, glossy red lips, a pair of black Sophia Webster ‘Coco’ crystal and pearl embellished heel pointed toe pumps, and a pair of vintage Fred Leighton diamond and pearl chandelier earrings. Letitia Wright was not really a fashion star when she was out on the road promoting Black Panther, but her style star rose quickly. She went from wearing seasons old Rami Al Ali and Bibhu Mohapatra to hot off the runway and custom Prada, Chanel, and Gucci. I have been missing seeing her on the red carpets this awards season so far and I am hoping that she will come out with the rest of the cast of the film for the SAG Awards this weekend. I would love to see Letitia bring this black Burberry Spring 2019 RTW collection column gown which features a high square neckline, stomach cutout, draped detail on the hips, crystal beaded trimming, and a center split. I honestly expect Letitia to wear a custom Prada gown on the red carpet at the SAG Awards on Sunday, but this would be a really interesting choice for her to make. It is makes for a modern glam moment. Pair it with a black Marzook crystal ball clutch, black Aquazzura ‘Minimalist’ PVC strap sandals, a finger wave inspired updo, winged eyeliner, red lips, and a pair of simple Chaumet ‘Laurier’ diamond and pearl cluster earrings and I know Letitia will grace this red carpet with sharp modern glamour. Mandy Moore is the only one on this list who isn’t in a movie cast. She always delivers chic moments on the red carpet and since she is part of the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series nominated cast of This Is Us I want to see her deliver a real chic statement moment on the SAG Awards red carpet this coming weekend. I saw this bold psychedelic pattern Emilio Pucci Pre-Fall 2019 one shoulder sequined column gown and I wanted to see it on the SAG red carpet. I just didn’t know who I thought could make it work. Then I thought of Mandy. There aren’t many red carpets during awards season where one could get away with wearing this bold of a gown, but the SAG Awards is one of them. I love how bold and glamorous this gown is and I definitely trust Mandy to really make it work. I think she would pair this gown with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, soft blush pink lips, a purple velvet Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ clutch, a pair of gold Aquazzura ‘Linda’ metallic leather sandals, and hammered gold and diamond David Webb drop earrings and it would all make for a perfect SAG red carpet moment.
The 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on Sunday January 27, 2019.
I’ve gotten a little behind in my wishes for this years Critics Choice Awards so I decided to add another lust to today. We are gearing up for a really chic red carpet and I am really excited to see what everyone will bring to the second major stop on the race to the Oscars. Charlize Theron is loyal to Dior, but sometimes she steps outside of that box and gives us a look from another label. I had already picked this black and white Givenchy Pre-Fall 2019 color blocked halter gown which features a column silhouette and a center split before Charlize had stepped onto the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards wearing a black and white custom Dior Couture gown. I thought about changing it in the wake of that gown, but to be honest Charlize loves black and white on the red carpet so it wouldn’t surprise me if she did the color combination back to back. I think that this black and white Givenchy gown is a very modern glam moment and I believe that Charlize has the statuesque beauty to really make this a beautiful moment. An ultra black Christian Dior ‘Diorama’ clutch, a sleek updo, smokey eyes, soft pink lips, white Christian Louboutin ‘Multipot’ strappy leather sandals, and a pair of Harry Winston diamond chandelier earrings would all make this look head to toe perfection.Elizabeth Olsen hit a stride last year with her style for the first time in a while while out promoting her blockbuster film Avengers: Infinity War. She sees herself nominated this Sunday for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Facebook Watch series Sorry For Your Loss. I want to see her bring simple elegance to the red carpet this Sunday wearing this black Chanel Spring 2019 RTW sleeveless tea length gown which features a sheer yoke and hem and a layered geometric construction. The gown itself isn’t anything spectacular, but I think it would be a very chic and glamorous moment for Elizabeth to wear on this red carpet especially if paired with a black Roger Vivier ‘Sexy Choc Rigid’ crystal buckle clutch, a sleek updo, defined eyes, red lip, and simple black Gianvito Rossi pointed toe ankle strap pumps. I was honestly a little surprised that Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding wasn’t on the red carpet on Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards. I do hope that he will join his co-stars at the 2019 Critics Choice Awards this weekend though where he is nominated with them for Best Ensemble Cast in a Movie. I know that Henry has some really chic style that goes between being classing and boundary pushing. I went with a more classic look for Henry opting for this sleek black Dior Man Pre-Fall 2019 tuxedo which features a one button double breasted blazer. This style has become one of Kim Jones’s signatures since he took over the reigns of the house last June. This more slim fit version of this suit I think I right up Henry’s style aisle. I think a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Greggo Orlato’ oxfords and a black button up would bring this look to life on the red carpet.Laurie Metcalf has earned a Critics Choice Award nomination for her role as Aunt Jackie in The Connors and I’m interested in seeing what she will bring to the red carpet. I have grown fond of her looks and when I was searching for the perfect look for her to wear I went to one of her go-to labels Badgley Mischka first. I saw this silver sequined long sleeve column gown which features a pink velvet studded harness like detail and a small train and it just clicked. Is it the most obvious choice? No. Laurie tends to like gowns that have a bit of a mother of the bride vibe to them and this gown does not. It has a chic glam style that is edged up a little with the built in harness. A sleek updo, smokey eyes, soft pink lips, a light pink velvet Tyler Ellis ‘Perry’ clutch, simple diamond drop earrings, and silver Badgley Mischka ‘Veil II’ t-strap crystal embellished sandals all would ensure this is a very glamorous moment on the red carpet. Rachel McAdams always bring the glitz and glam to the red carpet so when I saw her name on the list of nominees for Best Actress in a Comedy Movie for her performance in Game Night. I hope that we see her on Sunday night at the Critics Choice Awards red carpet and I would love it even more if she wore this black Elie Saab Fall 2018 Couture tuxedo inspired gown which features a lapel detailed bodice with a plunging neckline, embellishments on the top of the skirt, and a sheer a-line skirt. I love this gown and I definitely think that it is something that Rachel would definitely be able to sell this look to me with a sleek vintage inspired updo, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Nosy Strass’ pointed pumps, and Messika Fine Jewelry ‘Mata Hari’ asymmetrical wing cluster earrings.
The 2019 Critics Choice Awards will take place on Sunday January 13, 2019.
We have moved past my halfway point in my 2019 Golden Globe Awards wishes, but we still have many gorgeous potential moments still to look forward to. I think that this year will be the most dramatic and glamorous year in Golden Globe Awards history. The casts of movies that are nominated for Best Picture, even the ones that aren’t nominated, are likely to be on the red carpet. Despite the fact that they are not nominated I am really excited to see what they will bring to the red carpet. Angela Bassett is one of the more underrated members of the cast of the Best Motion Picture – Drama nominated Black Panther. I am expecting that she will deliver something dramatic and sexy when she steps out on the red carpet Sunday night to support the film. I saw this black metallic jacquard Zuhair Murad Fall 2018 Couture sleeveless gown which features a plunging neckline, leather belted waistband, a thigh high center split, full skirt, and dramatic train. This isn’t typically the gown that I would pick for this red carpet, but on Angela I know it would be magic. A full pulled back afro, smokey eyes, dark red glossy lips, a pair of black lace Christian Louboutin ‘Josephine’ lace-up pumps, and dramatic Jacob & Co. ‘Palladium’ diamond chandelier earrings would all ensure that while she isn’t nominated that Angela is here to hang.I just saw Crazy Rich Asians (I know I’m late to the party) and I have to say that I definitely think that Awkwafina’s character was probably one of my favorites in the film. She should totally get her own spin off film. I am interested in seeing what she will bring to the red carpets during awards season. She isn’t the biggest style star from the ensemble of Crazy Rich Asians but I think she will still deliver chic moments on the red carpet. I didn’t go for something huge like I did for Angela, instead opting for this simple red Solace London Spring 2019 RTW sleeveless jersey gown which features a square neckline and a flowing a-line skirt for Awkwafina to wear on this red carpet. For most I would have saved this gown for the SAG Awards, but I think that it works perfectly for Awkwafina to bring to life on this red carpet. A red Edie Parker ‘Jean’ marbled acrylic clutch, a pair of red Giuseppe Zanotti ‘Sophie’ sandals, old Hollywood waves, defined eyes, soft red lips, and Martin Katz ruby and diamond halo stud earrings would all ensure that Awkwafina is more than ready to show off her fashion chops on this red carpet. Chadwick Boseman was announced as a presenter last night, and I would imagine that he is most likely going to be the one who introduces the clip of his Best Motion Picture – Drama nominated film Black Panther. He has been serving looks on the red carpet and I am really excited to see what he will bring to Sunday night’s red carpet. When I was searching for the perfect look for him to bring to this red carpet I decided to keep his love of wearing coat suits on the red carpet, but up the formal game of them up a notch picking this black Alexander McQueen Spring 2019 Menswear tuxedo which features a silver paint pattern embroidered stripe down the front of the coat. This suit is bold and glamorous and I know that Chadwick has the chops to really make this look come to life on a red carpet. Despite being part of the Hollywood scene for years now Danai Gurira has never been to the main ceremony for the Golden Globes, but last month she joined Leslie Mann, Terry Crew, & Christian Slater to announce the nominees and being that she is part of the ensemble cast of Black Panther it would shock me if she doesn’t make an appearance this year. I would expect that Danai will most likely be announced as a presenter soon, but I think that we will at least see her seated at a table with the cast. I wanted to put this bright orange Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2019 cape sleeved gown for someone to rock on this red carpet the moment I saw it in the brands look book, but I wasn’t sure who I could think could make it work. So when I was searching for the perfect gown for Danai and I saw this look in my archive of saved looks I knew I had found just the right person to breathe life into this gown. There is a lot of movement in this photo which shoes that the gown has potential, but when posing on a red carpet a dress like this can look a little deflated. I truly believe that Danai would be able to push through and really breathe her major glam into this look. She currently has long braids which I would style into a chic large high bun, adding defined smokey eyes, dark red glossy lips, a pair of orange satin Manolo Blahnik x Vetements ankle wrap pumps, and a stunning statement orange titanium, diamond, and spessartite Vhernier ‘Orange Velvet collar necklace to ensure that this look is perfection. In terms of sheer beauty there was absolutely no one that held a camera to Gemma Chan as Astrid Young in Crazy Rich Asians. I was expecting major couture moments from Gemma as she went on the rounds promoting the film last year, but instead she opted for mostly short looks from brands like Oscar de la Renta and Simone Rochas. Don’t get me wrong she always looked beautiful, I was just expecting more drama from the British model turned actress. I have high expectations for what she will most likely wear on Sunday night at the Golden Globe Awards if she steps out to support her nominated cast member Constance Wu and the film which is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy. I didn’t even have to search for the perfect gown for Gemma. As soon as it came time for me to pick the perfect gown for her I immediately knew I wanted to see her wearing this baby pink and white Rodarte Spring 2019 RTW dotted lace and tulle gown features a curved deep V-neckline, thin straps, a fitted silhouette and textured tulle hem. I love this gown and I know that it would take just the right person to bring it to life on the red carpet and I think that Gemma has just the right statuesque glamour to really give this gown the effortless moment it deserves. I would style the gown with a loose wavy bob, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a metallic pink python Tyler Ellis ‘Lily’ clutch (to add a bold pop,) white Sophia Webster ‘Nicole’ sandals, and a pair of Tiffany & Co. diamond and pink quartz pendant drop earrings to really ensure that this look is feminine glamour from head to toe. Henry Golding also stars in Crazy Rich Asians, but like most of the cast he didn’t receive a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards. I would imagine thought that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will invite him to present at Sunday nights ceremony. He started this tour strong rocking some really great Tom Ford tuxedos (one that even landed him on the Best Dressed Men of 2018 list) but as 2018 came to a close his fit started getting sloppy. I am hoping Henry’s tailor was just on vacation and will be back fitting his suits to perfection as he makes the rounds during awards season. For Sunday nights red carpet I want to see Henry bring just a slightly boundary pushing menswear moment to the red carpet with this rich amethyst purple velvet Ralph Lauren Purple Label ‘Gregory’ slim fit shawl lapel tuxedo jacket paired with classic pieces including a white tuxedo shirt, black tuxedo pants, black bow tie, and a pair of simple black patent leather lace-ups to make this that bold menswear moment I am praying we see on the Globes red carpet.
The 2019 Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday January 6, 2019.
In the wishes I posted yesterday for the National Board of Review Awards it was dominated by people who I don’t know if they will be on the red carpet because they aren’t receiving individual honors. Today all of the people on this list are being honored with specific awards and not just part of a top 10 movie. Constance Wu is part of the ensemble cast of Crazy Rich Asians that will be honored with the Best Ensemble Cast award at this years National Board of Review awards gala. I had really high hopes for Constance’s promo tour earlier this year, but while she expanded her repertoire of designers I was underwhelmed when it came to the fit of pretty much everything. I was surprised at that fact because she is styled by Micaela Erlanger, who also dresses Lupita Nyong’o. I was finally into one of Constance’s looks when she stepped out for the Academy Governors Awards last month wearing a simple custom sequin pattered blush Miu Miu gown. The fit of that gown was perfect. Everything about that look was perfection, to be honest. I want her to bring that sense of glamour to the red carpet at the National Board of Review Awards gala red carpet. I think that she would do just that wearing this bold amethyst purple Dundas Pre-Fall 2019 silk georgette cape gown which features a plunging neckline, a fitted bodice, a straight silhouette, defined waist, and a full length pleated skirt with a thigh high slit. Dundas is always a good choice for sexy glamour and that is exactly what is being delivered here with this gown. Would Constance pull an Angelina or a JLo and work that side split to it’s full potential, probably not. But I do believe that it would be just a chic flash of leg as she walked. Add a romantic updo, smokey defined eyes, soft pink lips, a black Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud’ ostrich feather clasp clutch, a pair of black Jimmy Choo ‘Mimi’ strappy suede sandals, and a pair of vintage Cartier gold and amethyst art deco style stud earrings and Constance will be on track to deliver a really chic moment on this red carpet. Gemma Chan was so much better than her rerun slate blue Stella McCartney gown that she wore for the Academy Governors Awards last month. I am really excited to see what the British actress will bring to the red carpets over the course of awards season. She knows how to work some really avant garde style with effortless ease. The moment I saw this white and nude Maticevski Spring 2019 RTW ‘Dolls Eye’ backless chantilly lace dress which features a ruffled halter neckline and an A-line skirt I thought of Gemma and I knew it would be the perfect look for her to wear to join her Crazy Rich Asians co-stars to collect their Best Ensemble Cast award at the National Board of Review Awards gala. If this gown had hit the floor I would have counted it out, but that tea length hem makes it just the right amount of drama for an event the the NBR gala. It isn’t a gown that I think just needs shoes to be finished, but it is also a dress that can be really hard to style. A lot of things would turn this look from chic to overcooked real quick. Personally I would add a gold Sophia Webster ‘Clara’ crystal box clutch, a romantic updo, antique rose pink lips, soft smokey eyes, a pair of gold Sophia Webster ‘Rosalind’ strappy crystal heel sandals, and simple Anita Ko ‘Short’ rose gold set diamond cascade pear drop earrings to ensure this look is absolute head to toe perfection.Finishing out my wishes for the ensemble of the cast of Crazy Rich Asians is the incredibly handsome Henry Golding. I was really intrigued with Henry’s red carpet looks this last year. He slid onto my Best Dressed Men of the Year list and I am hoping he delivers looks that I will not even hesitate to consider for next years list. He isn’t the gut that pushes boundaries the most, but he does it in just the right amount to make me swoon. I was looking for the perfect tuxedo for him to wear on the red carpet at the National Board of Review Awards and I found it on the virtual racks of Mr. Porter. I saw this Ralph Lauren Purple Label tuxedo which features a navy ‘Gregory’ slit fit cotton and silk-blend jacquard peak lapel jacket, black pants, white shirt, and black bow tie and knew immediately it was the perfect look for Henry to bring to life on this red carpet. It is just bold enough because of the jacquard pattern to really make an impact on a red carpet that will most likely be filled with standard black tuxedos. I would push the boundaries of this look even further paring it with navy Christian Louboutin ‘Logo Dandelion’ flat crystal embroidered loafers, without socks, and I think that this would definitely be a menswear looks goals ensemble from head to toe. Emily Blunt stars in two of the films that are being lauded by the National Board of Review as some of the 10 Best Films of 2018 Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place. While she isn’t being lauded with an individual award it would not surprise me to see Emily, and her hubby John Krazinski, on the red carpet at the National Board of Review Awards gala. It has been a while buy Emily has rocked some chic Tom Ford looks on the red carpet and when I was searching the virtual racks for gowns I think should be optioned for the red carpets this awards season and when I saw this sunset pink Tom Ford sleeveless draped center column gown which features a deep plunging neckline I knew I wanted to see it on Emily. The more laid back nature of the NBR Awards is perfect for this gown. Is it anything boundary pushing? Not in the least, but it works for this kind of a red carpet especially when paired with simple waves, defined eyes, soft pink lips, a ballet pink satin Jimmy Choo ‘Cloud Bos’ with a crystal bow clasp, rosewood pink glitter Jimmy Choo ‘Misty’ platform sandals, and a pair of simple Chopard white and pink diamond pendant drop earrings. Lady Gaga is my favorite heading into awards season and I am hoping that at the National Board of Review Awards that she will be taking home her second trophy on the road to the Oscars. She will be honored with the Best Actress award for her performance in A Star Is Born at the National Board of Review Awards gala. I decided that while I am going down the go big or go home route for most of the rest of Gaga’s red carpet moments during this awards season I decided to go down a simpler route for the perfect look for her to wear on the red carpet at the NBR Gala. I want to see Gaga give us urban meets Hollywood glamour wearing this white Alexander Wang Fall 2019 RTW t-shirt column gown which features white fit cap sleeves and an asymmetrical neckline. It isn’t your typical red carpet gown and I feel like it would take someone with real presence to really be able to sell this gown to me on a red carpet and if anyone has presence it is Gaga. I really do believe she would shut this gown down on this red carpet with a sleek high bun, thick winged eyes, bold red lips, a pair of white Alexander Wang ‘Rina’ studded leather slingback pumps, and statement Jacob & Co. high jewelry diamond chandelier earrings. Thomasin McKenzie is one of my Ones to Watch in 2019 and apparently the National Board of Review agrees because they will be presenting her with the Breakthrough Performance award. Thomasin has been delivering chic looks from Dolce & Gabbana, Schiaparelli, and Louis Vuitton so I am really excited to see what she will deliver on red carpets over the course of awards season. I wanted something chic and glamorous that was still totally perfect for an 18 year old actress to wear on the red carpet. So when I saw this rainbow striped Carolina Herrera Resort 2019 one shoulder tulle gown which features a braided empire waist and a cape like train I knew it was the perfect fit. The gown is absolutely gorgeous, and while supermodel Tao Okamoto wore a black and white version of this gown to the CFDA Awards earlier this year, I think that it would be a perfect option for Thomasin to wear on this red carpet. The gown itself is statement enough that simple defined eyes, soft pink lips, a pair of dusty ice blue Rene Caovilla embellished denim strappy sandals, and Tiffany & Co. diamond and aquamarine stud earrings would all ensure that this is that real statement making moment I am expecting from Thomasin.
The 2019 National Board of Review Awards will take place on Tuesday January 8, 2019.
Last year it was the fact that I put up a Best Dressed Men of the Year list that really made me want to focus on making sure I featured more and more men this year. And I did just that. Men made it easy to want to as I feel like more and more men took risks. Stepped out of the black and navy suits on the red carpet and took chances. In most cases it paid off. We still have a long way to go. Also I almost feel like this list is an homage to some of the LGBTQ members of the Hollywood community seeing that 8 of the 10 looks on this list come from the community. I think we have made dressing “extra” for men less stigmatized and I just hope to see more and more men take risks over the next year and for years to come. But until then let us celebrate some of the most statement making looks from this year. 1) Timothee Chalamet in Alexander McQueen Fall 2018 Menswear at the London Film Festival premiere of Beautiful Boy: We have a lot of Timothee Chalamet on this list this year. I knew he was going to be special from the first time I saw him almost two years ago, and he has not let me down. He always was a fan of some of the more statement looks, but it was during the promo tour for Beautiful Boy this fall that I really got excited about his red carpet looks. He tops this years Best Dressed Men list wearing a bold navy and pink floral silk Alexander McQueen Fall 2018 Menswear suit on the red carpet at the films premiere at the London Film Festival that gave me major suit envy. This look was definitely not what I expected to see from Timmy, but he really made it a major moment. It was styled in such a relaxed way with a black v-neck t-shirt, chain necklaces, and black squared toe boots. It all just oozed relaxed swag. 2) Timothee Chalamet in custom Alexander McQueen at the San Sebastian International Film Festival premiere of Beautiful Boy: This is the first time in If I Was A Stylist history that the same person has been both the top of the list, and the second runner up. Timothee Chalamet rocked so many looks I loved this year. Again it is his signature style of great cuts and and relaxed attitude making this powder blue custom Alexander McQueen suit which features orange floral embroidery a major moment with the white button up worn sans tie and the white and red color blocked Alexander McQueen chunky sneakers that the look was paired with. It is just that mix of red carpet and street that I think Timothee loves to embrace.
3) RuPaul in custom Calvin Klein at the Primetime Emmy Awards: For his Emmy win for Outstanding Reality Show Host and Outstanding Reality Competition Program thanks to his show RuPaul’s Drag Race the man, er woman, herself rocked a perfectly fit custom Calvin Klein white double breasted suit which features a print of Warhol’s photos of the Statue of Liberty on the jacket and pants. The look was styled with a tone on tone shirt and tie and statement florescent orange Calvin Klein boots. I have always loved Ru and he really showed me why with this look.
4) Tommy Dorfman in Thom Browne at the MTV Movie & Television Awards: Tommy Dorfman is always a risk taker when it comes to fashion on the red carpet. He isn’t afraid to blur the lines on the social construction of gender and that is exactly what he did when he stepped onto the red carpet at the MTV Movie & Television Awards. This Thom Brown skirt suit was definitely not what I was expecting, but it was something that I really loved. He might have haters, especially from the religious right, but while I think they are wrong this look is oh so right. I wish I had the legs, and confidence, to pull something like this off. You can tell he doesn’t give a single fuck about what anyone else thinks. He knows he looks fierce.5) Adam Rippon in Moschino Fall 2018 Menswear at the Academy Awards: Coming off his time becoming a viral star for standing up against Mike Pence at the 2018 Winter Olympics Adam Rippon exploded everywhere. He might have only walked away from those games with a bronze medal, but he won at life in the weeks and months following. One major moment for him was when he was invited to the Oscars and he shunned the typical tuxedo for an S&M inspired tail coat tuxedo from Moschino Fall 2018 Menswear that was worn with slippers sans socks. Everything about this look is the perfect meshing of classic and sex. It breaks red carpet norms on a red carpet where men typically take fewer risks. So I laud Adam for breaking the mold on this stiff red carpet.
6) Timothee Chalamet in Louis Vuitton Spring 2019 Menswear at the LA premiere of Beautiful Boy: I am not done celebrating Timothee Chalamet yet. The boy really was beautiful over the course of this fall’s red carpets. He brought so many varried moments to the red carpet that all were statement making, but still very laid back. This red Louis Vuitton Spring 2019 Menswear suit paired with a total t-shirt and chunky winter white sneakers was one of the looks from Virgil Abloh’s debut for the brand that I really wanted to see on the red carpet, and in my own closet. Timothee really just brought the easy confidence to the red carpet in this ensemble.
7) Timothee Chalamet in custom Louis Vuitton at the Hollywood Film Awards: Now this is the last time we will see Timmy on this list. As I have now said many times I was really excited by the looks that he brought. For the Hollywood Film Awards, where he was honored with the Supporting Actor Award, he once again turned back to Louis Vuitton by Virgil Abloh to create his look. This time a custom look which was a classic black suit, but the standout here was the beaded Wizard of Oz poppy and yellow brick road t-shirt. On the runway Virgil did this beading on some of a bombers, anoraks, and hoodies. This was a little different and I loved everything about it. 8) Antoni Porowski in Balmain at the Primetime Emmy Awards: Finishing out my love of all the LGBTQ men on the red carpet this year is one of the breakout stars of the new Netflix reboot of the series Queer Eye Antoni Porowski. While he might be more known for his thirst trap Instagram’s and his love of avocados he brought some major glam to the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards wearing a modern military take on the tails suit with a custom Balmain tuxedo that has a cropped shawl lapel jacket with silver buttons, the tightest tuxedo pants ever, a white shirt with silver stud buttons, and pair of metallic silver heel boots. He showed that while he might be a new face on the game, and not being the style guru on the show, that he can hang with some of the biggest names in the red carpet sphere!
9) Henry Golding in Tom Ford at the LA premiere of Crazy Rich Asians: 2018 saw a lot of breakout stars, many of them on this list. I had no idea who Henry Golding was going into the promo tour for Crazy Rich Asians, but I definitely know who he is now. He brought a lot of chic menswear moments to the red carpets this year. My favorite moment was one of his first when he stepped onto the red carpet at the LA premier of Crazy Rich Asians wearing a Tom Ford tuxedo which features an ice blue silk jacquard shawl lapel blazer. It was that statement menswear moment that really made me take notice of Henry’s style. The movie is nominated at all of the major awards events so far so I am very excited to see what he will bring next year.
10) Chadwick Boseman in Givenchy Spring 2018 Couture at the Academy Awards: Rounding out this list is Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick brought so many major moments to the red carpet this year I had a hard time picking the look from him that I really wanted to feature on this list. I decided that it was going to be the first Givenchy Couture menswear red carpet moment that was what I loved the most. He, like Adam Rippon, shunned a traditional tuxedo for the Oscars. I loved his Givenchy Spring 2018 Couture crystal beaded coat paired with a vicars collar button down and simple black pants. It was not anything I was expecting on this red carpet and I really think that he delivered it.
2018 was a major year for menswear on the red carpet and I hope that 2019 just continues to see men pushing the boundaries of style on the red carpet. Which dude delivered the best look this year for you?
I wanted to add a second set of wishes for Sunday nights Hollywood Film Awards because they will be honoring the cast of Crazy Rich Asians with the Hollywood Breakout Ensemble Award. There are so many new faces in Crazy Rich Asians, so many who haven’t headlined a popular film. They delivered some major moments on the red carpets while they were out promoting the film and I am really interested in seeing what will come from the cast as they step out on this red carpet to accept their award. Heading into 2018 I had no idea who Awkwafina was. But with her roles in two major blockbusters, Crazy Rich Asians and Oceans 8, I have gotten to know who she is a little more. Her wardrobe on the promo trail for Crazy Rich Asians included looks from Reem Acra, John Paul Ataker, and Wolk Morais. None of them really spoke to me. I’m hoping that she will deliver something really glamorous when she steps out for the Hollywood Film Awards this weekend. She was seated front row at the Prabal Gurung Spring 2019 RTW show and while I didn’t find anything from that collection that I thought was perfect for Awkwafina to bring to life on the red carpet I did find this marine blue Grecian goddess gown from his Resort 2019 collection which features a fit and flare silhouette with a plunging v-neckline and draped short sleeves is perfect for her to bring to life on this red carpet. Awkwafina doesn’t have height on her side and she has curves so I wanted to pick something that I thought would elongate her frame as well as compliment her curves. I definitely think that this gown would do just that. I think that a romantic updo, defined wing eyes, bright pink lips, and a pair of navy Rene Caovilla crystal studded snakeskin ankle wrap sandals would really ensure that this is the perfect moment for Awkwafina to bring to this red carpet. I knew Constance Wu from her leading role in the ABC comedy series Fresh Off The Boat prior to her lead role in Crazy Rich Asians, but I didn’t know much about her style. She did at the start of this tour swap stylists and started working with Micaela Erlanger (who also dresses Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong’o, Common, Michelle Dockery, & more) and helped bring a new level of style to Constance’s red carpet looks. We saw Constance wearing looks from labels like Ralph & Russo Couture, Rodarte, and Michael Kors. I had high expectations for Constance’s style for that tour, but I won’t lie I was a little disappointed. She is slowly getting better and with the film expected to be nominated for several major awards during awards season I am hoping we will see Constance bring looks that make me really love. Her Jason Wu gown at the Emmy Awards gives me hope! This dusty light blue Elie Saab Spring 2018 Couture draped gown which features a mini skater style skirt, intricate beaded embroidery, a feathered neckline, and a dramatic cape seems like a stretch for anyone over the age of 18 to bring to life on the red carpet, but I do really believe that Constance has the right type of princess-y vibe to make this gown to come to life on the red carpet. The dress itself is such a statement that the styling should be really simple. I would just add a simple pair of gold Aquazzura ‘Linda’ sandals, a sleek updo, defined eyes, and soft pink lips to really let the gown be the star of this look. Gemma Chan gave us the gambit of luxury while promoting Crazy Rich Asians wearing Louis Vuitton, Prabal Gurung, Oscar de la Renta, Kenzo, Valentino, and Simone Rocha. In fact Gemma was the only member of the cast to make a Best Dressed list with that Simone Rocha look she wore for the films premiere in London. She was always the one I thought would bring the most fashion factor to the red carpet and I wasn’t disappointed. I am really interested to see what she will wear on her first major Hollywood awards show red carpet and I feel like this major Alexander McQueen one shoulder gown which features an embroidered butterfly bodice, an a-line skirt, and chic fringe would be just another beautiful moment for her to bring to life on the red carpet. It is the commercial version of a fully embroidered gown that came down the Alexander McQueen Fall 2018 RTW runway, but while I love the runway gown this edited version is perfect for Gemma to wear on this red carpet. Glamorous old Hollywood waves, defined eyes, red lips, a black and gold studded Alexander McQueen ‘Queen and King’ kiss lock box clutch, black Christian Louboutin ‘Rosie’ platform sandals, and a pair of vintage Fred Leighton diamond drop earrings all would really ensure that this look is glamour defined. Henry Golding was another I had no idea about heading into this year, or even this tour. I have been on a push to include more menswear on If I Was A Stylist and if I had known that Henry had caught the eye of Tom Ford I would have put him on my wishes too. He wore ice blue and rose gold tuxedo jackets from Tom Ford to the films premieres in Los Angeles and Singapore respectively and I was really taken. I don’t always need men to go the Timothee Chalamet route of rocking bold printed suits on the red carpet, but the effort of going left of normal is always applauded. Henry might fit the ‘standard handsome’ block well the pushing the boundaries of color on the red carpet makes him one of my favorites to watch on the red carpet. For the Hollywood Film Awards I would love to see him call up Tom Ford again and get his hands on this hot pink velvet peak lapel tuxedo jacket that I would pair with a white tuxedo shirt, black satin bow tie, black tuxedo pants, and a pair of black Tom Ford ‘Chesterfield’ patent leather tassel front loafers. The hot pink is a definite statement but the rest is very classic & I think that is perfect for Henry to bring to this red carpet.
The 2018 Hollywood Film Awards will take place on Sunday November 4, 2018.
