2020 Cannes Film Festival What Could Have Been Wish List: “Soul”

There is usually one blockbuster animated feature selected to screen as an out of competition at a gala premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Festival director Thierry Fremaux all but confirmed that Pixar’s Soul was going to fill this spot this year in an interview with Variety. The film, now set for a Thanksgiving release, looks like a smart spiritual sister to Inside Out according to Indiewire. Inside Out also screened as a gala at the Cannes Film Festival. While that movie was about the emotions that drive the human mind, Pete Docter’s followup is all about the soul that gives people their humanity. Jamie Foxx voices Joe Gardner, a mild-mannered middle school music teacher who has always dreamed of performing jazz at a lauded club, and the film follows his journey after his soul is accidentally booted out of his body. Other details are slim, but we know that Soul, which is also the rare Pixar feature focused on a person of color, will see Joe attempting to reunite his body and soul after learning some big lessons along the way. Jamie Foxx is a man with style and one of the few gentleman I included in my wishes for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. In the midst of working on my Met Gala wishes as I was contemplating what to do for the postponed Cannes Film Festival I accidentally deleted the folder containing all the runway images I reference for my wishes from a drive on my computer and lost the entire thing. So I had to rebuild it. As I was re-saving my favorites from the collections back to my drive, I saw this classically Missoni knit look from the multi earth tone Missoni Fall 2020 Menswear collection which features a long sleeve collared cardigan, t-shirt, and striped pants and immediately knew that if I was going to do Cannes wishes that it was the perfect look for Jamie to wear if he was going to attend a photocall at the festival. Well obviously I decided to do it and so when I was picking his looks I didn’t even have to think twice about this look. For the premiere I went for something classic with a dazzling twist opting for a copper threaded Celine Fall 2020 Menswear tuxedo which features black satin peak lapels. This look is definitely a great twist on classic tuxedo dressing and I feel like Jamie would definitely rock this look with effortless swagger. Now I don’t see Jamie wearing the pussy bow blouse the look was styled with on the runway instead I would recommend a black button down and a black satin skinny tie. Angela Bassett also stars alongside Jamie Foxx in Soul. This was going to be the first time Angela has attended the Cannes Film Festival since 1997. Over the last two years Angela has definitely shown us that she is a real fashion girl. She has been delivering bold, dramatic, and glamorous moments every single time she has stepped onto a red carpet. So I was really looking forward to seeing what she and her stylist Jennifer Austin were going to cook up for her turn in Cannes. I went opposite of what one would normally expect opting to pick couture for Angela to wear for her Cannes photocall while I picked a RTW gown for her to wear for the premiere. Again as I was rebuilding my archive of runway images I saw this black Elie Saab Fall 2018 Couture suit which consists of a sheer beaded peplum blazer which features a dramatic sash that turns into a train and a pair of skinny fit ankle length pants and it just spoke to me as the perfect photocall moment for Angela. It is sophisticated and sexy all at the same time and out have come together perfectly with full tight curls, defined eyes, nude lips, a pair of black suede Christian Louboutin ‘So Kate’ pointed toe pumps, and a pop of color via red Atelier Swarovski ‘Tigris’ crystal ear clips. For the premiere I went to a designer that Angela has worn for major events including the Emmy’s and the NAACP Image Awards: Azzi & Osta. I wanted to to see Angela bring this column gown from the Azzi & Osta Fall 2020 RTW collection which features a draped gold lamé bodice that turns into a major sash train and a black crepe column skirt. The gown is classic, but the lamé gives it a bit of edge. I think that is exactly what I think Angela should wear on a red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival promoting a film. Styling this gown with a sleek updo, smokey eyes, red lips, a gold art deco pattern Judith Leiber Couture ‘Swanson Gaia’ crystal embellished clutch, a pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Very Cathy’ peep toe ankle strap platform sandals, and a gold crystal Atelier Swarovski by Christopher Kane ‘Golden Shadow’ slim bolster collar necklace would definitely have put the perfect finishing touches on this look for Angela. Tina Fey would have made her Cannes Film Festival debut this year thanks to Soul. The funny lady is up and down to me when it comes to her red carpet style. So had Cannes actually taken place and Tina jetted to the French Riviera I would have loved seeing her do so giving some of her best looks. For the photocall I went for light and elegant pinking this aqua Rochas Pre-Fall 2020 asymmetrically draped midi dress which features short flutter sleeves. This gown is glamorous and elegant and I just know that in the setting of that iconic balcony where photocalls take place in Cannes that this look would have screamed glamour. Style this dress with effortless waves, defined eyes, her thick black rimmed eye glasses, soft pink lips, and a pair of metallic gold Roger Vivier flower strass crystal buckle mid heel pointed toe pumps and I know that Tina would be putting her best foot forward. For the premiere I would have trusted Tina with one of my favorite looks from the Spring 2020 Couture collections with this electric blue liquid sequin Valentino sleeveless mermaid gown. If you’ve been following my Cannes wishes this isn’t the first time this gown has made an appearance. I also picked this gown for Priyanka Chopra. Both ladies I think would look fantastic wearing this gown, but each would bring it to life in a different way. I think that Tina would definitely make it more of a modern classic moment styling it with a loose updo, defined eyes, red lips, electric blue satin Aquazzura ‘Deneuve’ pointed toe pumps, and a selection of Chopard ‘Magical Setting’ collection white diamond jewels including a pair of drop earrings and a matching cocktail ring. Elsa Hosk had one of the best gowns in Cannes last year channeling her inner Lauren Hutton wearing custom rainbow sherbet Etro. It was one of my favorite looks of all of last year. The gorgeous model is basically the living embodiment of Barbie and I really wanted to see her deliver glamour on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet this year. While I would imagine she would have been back in Cannes with Etro this year I went for goddess glamour picking this sky blue chiffon Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition Spring 2020 Couture gown which features a plunging neckline, chain detail on the shoulders, knot detail on the waist, and sash scarves hanging from the shoulders. Now the gown is gorgeous all on its own, but in Cannes you have to go big or go home. So I would ask Alberta to custom make this gown for Elsa with a long dramatic train. Finish this look with old Hollywood waves over one shoulder, thick winged eyes, hot pink lips, a pair of silver crystal embellished Rene Caovilla ‘Cleo’ coil strap sandals, and dazzling de Grisogono white diamond and cabochon sapphire teardrop earrings and Elsa would have definitely had another major glamour moment for this years Cannes Film Festival. In the second wish I wanted to see Helen Mirren bring to life on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet I really wanted to see her bring this sage and brown Azzedine Alaia Fall 2020 RTW long sleeve gown which features all over pleating, a cinched waist, and a plunging neckline. When I saw this gown several months ago I knew it would be perfect for Helen and I was just waiting for the right time to make the wish. As I was pulling the wishes for Cannes 2020 together I saw this dress again and I knew it was going to be perfect. What sealed the deal was when I saw a pair of light green tsavorite and aquamarine Chopard Red Carpet Collection drop earrings that would perfectly compliment this dress. Helen knows how to sell a look and I know she would do just that with this gown. Now I can say that just as presented with those earrings, the neckline brought up just a little, a dark green satin Judith Leiber Couture ‘Soho’ coffered clutch, and black sheer Jimmy Choo ‘Romy 85’ sequin embroidered pointed toe pumps that this look would be perfect for Helen. But I might also want to see the dress modified to make it even more of a Cannes moment for Helen adding a train to really make sure this look exudes regal elegance. A curly updo, defined eyes, and dark antique rose pink lips would add the perfect finishing touches to this ensemble.

Milan Fashion Week Fall 2020 RTW Red Carpet Wish List

As they say fashion week stops for nothing. Well this season the Coronavirus tried to shut down the bi-annual Milan Fashion Week, and only partially succeeded. While the theaters on the final day of Milan Fashion Week might have been devoid of the usual guests of editors, buyers, celebrities, and influencers the shows still went on with those aforementioned people watching the collections come down the runway via a livestream from their hotel rooms. Overall I feel like while in shear number I was disappointed in the offerings that came out of Milan, but overall the quality of moment far exceeded both New York and London. In my wishes below you will find some absolutely major wishes for which I am now sending major positive energy out into the universe to manifest the red carpet moments and keep be excited about fashion. After loosing inspiration towards the end of last year and a mostly lackluster and rushed awards season the looks below give me hope that this year will have major glamour moments in store for us.

2020 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Wish List Part 1

The 2020 Golden Globe Awards are this Sunday and I am super excited to see what everyone is going to bring to the red carpet after the unofficial kick off to awards season last night at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Black Tie Awards Gala. Since we are so close to the actual event and I have been super behind (THANK YOU HOLIDAYS) I am just going to put up galleries with all my wishes between today and tomorrow so be on the look out. This first set of wishes features looks for 20 nominees, presenters, guests of nominated films, and plus ones to bring to life on the red carpet at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. This red carpet is deemed the most formal affair of awards season until the Oscars so I am definitely hoping that the stars go big or go home. Some of my favorite moments in this list include the gowns for Camilla Marrone, Reese Witherspoon, Katherine Langford, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, and Jodie Comer. Who are you excited to see on this red carpet and more importantly what do you want them to wear?

“Avengers: Endgame” LA Premiere Red Carpet Wish List Part 2

So as I said earlier the cast of Avengers: Endgame is so large I had to break it up into two different posts just to be able to cover almost the entire a-list cast. This is going to be an absolutely major red carpet and I am really excited to see what the cast will bring to this red carpet.Chadwick Boseman has had a major run over the last year or so thanks to his title role in Black Panther. He has also come out as a major style guy when it comes to men’s fashion. I am really excited to see what he will bring to the red carpet at this premiere. I decided to go for a major style moment opting for this blue Missoni Fall 2019 Menswear shawl lapel tuxedo. It is a chic style moment that I definitely think that would be right up Chadwick’s style ally. Now I would imagine he would remove the lookbooks chevron knit shirt that it was paired with in the lookbook keeping the turtleneck adding a pair of navy Christian Louboutin ‘Logo Dandelion’ crystal embellished loafers to make this the perfect menswear moment for him to bring to life on this red carpet. Elizabeth Olsen can give me some major fashion moments on the red carpet. Last year during the Avengers: Infinity War promo tour where she wore Alexandre Vauthier and Oscar de la Renta I remembered why I fell in love with her style in the first place. I want Elizabeth to really wow me when she steps out for the LA premiere of Avengers: Endgame later this month and I definitely think that would happen if she did so wearing this white Brandon Maxwell Fall 2019 RTW column gown which features a racer-back, plunging neckline, and zipper details. This is definitely more of a demure approach to glamour than I would typically pick for a major blockbuster superhero movie premiere, but I honestly think that it is something that Elizabeth would be drawn to. A sleek updo, defined eyes, red lips, a pair of silver Roger Vivier ‘Viv’ sandals, Hueb ‘Botanica’ diamond and tanzanite ear crawlers would continue the chic glam while adding a statement Judith Leiber pop art crystal clutch would definitely make this a major look for Elizabeth to deliver for this major red carpet premiere. Gwyneth Paltrow has definitely not given me a major look to get excited about in a while and I don’t really expect much from her on the red carpet at the LA premiere of Avengers: Endgame. I decided to go for simple and chic with this white Tom Ford open-side blouson viscose cady mini dress because it was just the right look for Gwyneth to bring to life on this red carpet. She doesn’t actually play a superhero so I think that this simpler dress is perfect for her to bring to life on the red carpet. I know that Gwyneth won’t deliver something major on this red carpet but with her signature flat ironed center parted hair, smokey eyes, nude glossy lips, a pair of gold Tom Ford knot detail sandals, and statement Bulgari High Jewelry ‘Color Treasures’ tanzanite, rubellite, aquamarine, and pearl drop earrings that this would still be a really chic look for her to hang with all her Endgame co-stars. Pom Klementiff is the most underrated of the stars in my wishes for the LA premiere if Avengers: Endgame. The French/Korean/Russian actress has a look about her that is uniquely her own and definitely knows how to rock a red carpet. She isn’t afraid of color or drama and I am hoping that she and her stylist, Petra Flannery, are cooking up something amazing for this red carpet. Rami Kadi isn’t a typical name I expect to see on one of Petra’s racks, but the moment I saw this black strapless column gown from the designers debut Paris Couture runway collection which features a dramatic ruffle, intricate rainbow sequin embellishments, and a thigh high cutout split I thought it would be the perfect look for Pom to rock on this red carpet. To me this Spring 2019 Couture gown is the perfect meshing of classic glamour, modern glamour, and a bit of alien edge to make for a really visually interesting gown. A sleek low bun, defined winged eyes, bright pink lips, a pair of black Jimmy Choo ‘Pattie’ peep toe platform sandals, and Niwika ‘Hanayuki’ floral inspired diamond drop earrings all would make this look scream edgy glamour. Finishing out the list is the always fantastic Tilda Swinton. As regular readers may know I love me a Swinton sighting on the red carpet. You never know just how edgy or feminine she is going to be on the red carpet. I actually just heard a rumor that one of her films is definitely screening at the Cannes Film Festival next month and I cannot be more excited. I want to see Tilda show everyone how effortless glamour is done on the red carpet at the LA premiere of Avengers: Endgame though wearing this black and white sequined Chanel Fall 2019 RTW ensemble which features a long sleeve bodice, satin belt, and wide leg pants. I don’t know what the house of Chanel’s policy about loaning looks out designed by the brands late creative director Karl Lagerfeld will be, but if they are loaning I definitely want to see this specific look on Tilda. Her signature coif, red lips, and a pair of black Chanel mesh and grosgrain slingback pointed toe pumps all would ensure that Tilda just oozes effortless cool glam.

The LA premiere of Avengers: Endgame is expected on Monday April 22, 2019.

15 Looks From Milan Fashion Week Spring 2019 I Want To See On The Red Carpet

Milan Fashion Week ended almost two and a half weeks ago, but I have just been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to get my 15 favorite looks that I want to see on the red carpet list out there. These posts take a lot of time not just because I have to go through all of the collections and narrow down all the looks down to just 15 but have to research the collections and then pick who I want to see wearing the looks on the red carpet. Over the course of Milan Fashion Week I saved over 350 looks that I think have red carpet potential. These looks cover everything from major gowns to cocktail moments to chic casual looks for press events to edgy performance looks. I went through all of those collections and narrowed them down to the following 15. These are the looks from Milan Fashion Week – Spring 2019 that I want to see on a red carpet.Attico: One of the brands that I have loved watching grow over the last year is Attico. It is one of the chicest, very Italian brands who deliver very wearable glamour in their collections. For Spring 2019 RTW the collection was a major love letter to the 80’s and I definitely think we will see many looks from he collection on the red carpet. Over the last year stars have really embraced the brand for cocktail and press appearances. In fact Olga Kurylenko has already brought a feathered buster and leather cargo pants ensemble from the brands Spring 2019 RTW collection to life for the London premiere of Jenny English Strikes Again. I went for more a simple look from this collection for Jennifer Lopez with this lilac and orange creamsicle fluid pois jacquard ‘Pat’ dress which features puff shoulders, faux wrap style, a v-neckline, a tie detail at waist, and embellished shoulder details. This dress is very chic and wearable and if JLo rocked this for a press stop during her upcoming movie promo tour I think it would be perfection.

Dolce & Gabbana: In the wake of Stefano Gabbana calling Selena Gomez, whom Dolce & Gabbana had dressed several times over the years, ugly it seemed like the Time’s Up movement was going to really push a boycott of the brand. However since the brand is such a fashion powerhouse I don’t think is going to stop stars from wearing the brand on the red carpet. In fact Cardi B just wore a dramatic gown from this collection on the red carpet at the American Music Awards. Aside from that Domenico & Stefano showed a collection that really embraced all of the codes that they have infused into the brands DNA over the last 33 years. The show was a celebration of women, a diverse group of women. There were women of different sizes, every color, and many age groups. It was actually really beautiful. The moment I saw this blue and natural sleeveless mixed-fringe midi dress which features contrasting rows of fringe and tassels throughout, a midi length, and a column silhouette I pictured it being rocked by Amal Clooney as she is spotted headed out on a date night with George.

Emporio Armani: I usually wouldn’t pay much attention to Emporio Armani, but with bold colors and sparkling embellishments my inner magpie was drawn to this collection. This faction of the Armani brand is usually geared towards a younger crowd and I really think that there are quite a few looks that young Hollywood stars will want to fight over. I think that if anyone could really make this electric lime green and royal blue strapless jumpsuit which features intricate sequin and feathered embroidery and I definitely think it would be Halsey.Ermanno Scervino: When you look at an Ermanno Scervino collection you know you are going to get two things volume and glamour. The brand is known for those and doesn’t veer from that very often. While you don’t get boundary pushing designs like you can find at other Milan based brands like Marni, Prada, or Gucci you know that there will be great red carpet options from Ermanno Scervino. Orange is a huge trend for Spring 2019 RTW and I think that Jasmine Sanders would be the perfect person to bring this Ermanno Scervino Spring 2019 RTW orange tea length gown which features a strapless sweetheart neckline and dramatic ruffles offering of the trend to life on the red carpet.

Etro: While Etro is a very successful brand when it comes to sales they don’t often get a whole lot of red carpet love. The brand, known for bold eccentric prints, doesn’t focus on celebrities to influence sales likes some other brands so when they do end up on a red carpet I get very excited. There aren’t a whole lot of looks from the Etro Spring 2019 RTW collection that I think could be red carpet looks, but this black white and yellow floral print one shoulder gown is definitely one that I think could be really chic. I think that if anyone could really make this look work, probably on one of the more causal party red carpets, it would be supermodel turned actress Suki Waterhouse.

Fausto Puglisi: In an off season from showing a runway show Fausto Puglisi showed an 80’s Flashdance inspired collection in a presentation/lookbook. The collection was very much repetitive, but it is definitely something that I think many music stars will be drawn to. While I typically pick red carpet looks for this list it was this cape meets letterman jacket and color blocked swimsuit that really spoke to me from this collection. I immediately pictured Rita Ora rocking this look for one of her many performances. Giorgio Armani: I wasn’t thrilled with the Giorgio Armani Spring 2019 RTW. I was hoping for really amazing things, but I was rather underwhelmed with what Mr. Armani sent down the runway. The fit of the collection overall was terrible and the color palette reminded me of a Dixie disposable cup. I do however want to thee this Monet ‘Waterlilies’ inspired print beaded fringe cap sleeve jumpsuit which features a plunging v-neckline, and cutout sides and back on the red carpet and wouldn’t supermodel Karolina Kurkova just really deliver this look with ease on the red carpet?

Marni: Marni is one of the rarest brands on this list to see on the red carpet. It used to be a favorite of Anna Wintour, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Carey Mulligan. It had a hit H&M collaboration. But we don’t often see the brand on the red carpet anymore. I will say there weren’t too many looks from the Spring 2019 RTW collection that I think have what it takes to make a really chic red carpet moment (plenty of items that can be incorporated into your personal wardrobe though,) but this neutral canvas sleeveless midi dress which features a ruched exaggerated waist, a gathered a-line skirt, and blue hand-painted floral detail throughout made Keira Knightley pop into my mind. It could be a really chic press look while she is out promoting The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Missoni: In the last year we have seen a revitalized celebrity love of Milan based knitwear brand Missoni on the red carpet. The brand has been back to more creative looks than just reinventing its signature multicolored zig zag print over and over again. It’s almost like the brand has gone through a bit of a renaissance again. While incredibly easy to wear knits were the focus of the brands Spring 2019 RTW collection there were a handful of looks that I could definitely see celebrity stylists vying to get their hands on. One of those looks was this slate blue sheer halter gown which features layers of metallic knit layers. This is a very easy glam moment and the moment I saw it I immediately thought it would be something that Zoe Saldana would be drawn to. Moschino: There was a bit of controversy surrounding Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2019 Collection for Moschino. Edda Gimnes, a Norwegian womenswear designer based in London, accused Scott to taking un-credited inspiration from one of her collections that heavily featured a marker print as did this collection, but I have to say that the kitschy (campy) spirit of this print is something that has been in the Moschino archive for many years. He gave several examples of this technique in his defense including a Moschino ad campaign from 1986 and a jacket (similar to the one shown above) shown in the Moschino Spring 1992 collection. I loved the major artist doodle pad meets Pretty Woman vibe that was given in this collection. Jeremy is one of the masters, and I definitely think that the MET Museum picked wrong in its choice of designer co-chairs for next years MET Gala. The show started strong with the black and white trompe-l’œil print crepe suit which features a bow front blazer and a pair of tapered pants and just continued to deliver hit look after hit look. I was taken with that suit because it seemed to be the perfect meshing of the brands signature camp and a sense of wearability and I definitely think that it is something that Evan Rachel Wood would rock on a red carpet. No one does a suit on a red carpet quite like ERW.

No. 21: Every season I always find one look from No. 21 to feature on my lists. I love the brand. From the chic clothing it creates to amazing iconic accessories I just think that the brand exudes wearable glamour. I also feel like the brand is totally underrated when it comes to the red carpet. It has attracted the likes of Constance Wu, Dakota Fanning, Diane Kruger, and Jessica Chastain in the last year or so. I want to see stars snatch up looks from the Spring 2019 RTW collection including this sequin fringe ‘Anne’ dress features a sleeveless knit dress underneath an embellished outer layer with a fitted silhouette which I definitely think Amber Heard should snatch up for press appearances for Aquaman.

Roberto Cavalli: I was less than impressed with Paul Surridge’s debut as the Roberto Cavalli creative director a year ago. He just didn’t seem to have that same sense of sex and flash that is at the core of the Cavalli DNA, but considering some of the couture gowns he’s created for Olivia Wilde, Sara Sampaio, Joan Smalls, and Alessandra Ambrosio in addition to his Resort 2019 collection I think that he could have a place at the house, he just has a steep learning curve to live up to the likes of Mr. Cavalli himself and even former creative director Peter Dundas. I do believe that he did a better job of balancing his tailoring experience with the hyper sexuality of the Cavalli woman this season. I actually want to see several of the looks from this collection on the red carpet and I definitely think that Olivia Wilde would take this terracotta colored long sleeve midi dress which features a sheer long sleeve beaded bodice with a plunging neckline and a ruched a-line midi skirt and make it a really chic red carpet moment. Is it the sexy mini dresses that Surridge also presented in this collection? No, but I still think that it defines the Cavalli woman. Salvatore Ferragamo: Like the new Cavalli creative director I was less than enthused with Paul Andrew’s (the shoe designer whose eponymous line I LOVE) debut at Salvatore Ferragamo back in February, but now he has had a look on both my Best of Resort 2019 and my Best of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2019 lists. The collections have gotten stronger and stronger. There were several looks from his newest collection that I think are destined for casual events like press interviews and then gowns that are perfect for gala’s. I think that for one of the more edgier, “artistic” galas that Olivia Munn would rock this suede macramé dress layered over indocina silk slip dress features a sleeveless body with a straight, fitted silhouette and full length with fringe hem. It is edgy and glamorous and I definitely think with her inherent sex appeal that Olivia radiates on the red carpet would really ensure this look is perfection.

Sportmax: I don’t usually bother looking at Sportmax collection typically. The looks that the brand send down the runway aren’t typically what I feature here on If I Was A Stylist, but something told me to check out this seasons collection. I’m glad I did. The brand had more of a dazzling air to it this season compared to the more day to day sportswear vibe we typically see from the brand. I fell in love with this silver and blue ‘Ciriaco’ dress designed with slits on both sides, sequin detailing throughout, a haltered neckline, and a midi length hem the moment I saw it. Is it anything really innovative or boundary pushing when it comes to style? No, but it is just a fun dazzling party look that I think would be perfect for Tiffany Haddish.

Vionnet: Finishing out this list is the always beautiful Vionnet. The label established in 1912 and revitalized in 2009 has been one of the brands that I feel is very underrated. When it first relaunched it was a celeb favorite, but in recent years that love has waned. I want to see the brand, which has been working at becoming a leader in sustainable luxury, have a resurgence as a celebrity favorite. It isn’t one of the edgy boundary pushing labels that we typically see on the fashion week circuit, but I think that the glamorous draping is perfect for the red carpet. It has been a hot minute but Naomie Harris was a fan of Vionnet and I definitely think that she would be the perfect person to bring this beige and hot pink tulle draped gown which features a silver waistband, plunging v-neckline, and a sheer skirt to life on a red carpet.

So there you have it my 15 favorite looks that came down the Milan Fashion Week runways for Spring 2019 RTW. Which ones do you want to see on the red carpet and who do you want to see bring it to life?

Best Dressed of July 2018

July is typically a pretty slow month, and that was kinda the tune again this year. Typically my Best Dressed of July list is full of street style moments, but this year while there were only 50 looks I considered for this list this month (compared to 91 in June, 306 in May, 66 in April, and 184 in March) but stars really brought the glam to both the red carpets and the sidewalks. Could any of these looks keep the glam in my mind all the way to my Best Dressed of the Year list? Who knows! It has happened before. 1) Ciara in Maticevski Fall 2018 RTW at the 2018 ESPY Awards: Ciara really wowed me when she stepped onto the red carpet at the ESPY Awards early last month. She set the bar high and no one surpassed her. I don’t typically get all that excited about looks we see on the ESPY Awards red carpet, but the wife of NFL superstar quarterback Russell Wilson played the role of the perfect plus one in a statement making marigold and white Maticevski Fall 2018 RTW gown which features an asymmetric neckline with one sleeve elegantly slipping off the shoulder. The origami draping provided this structured glamour that did not feel stiff and her PVC and gold spike studded Christian Louboutin ‘Spikoo’ pumps just added a very subtle edgy touch to this incredibly glamorous moment. 2) Beyonce in Valentino Fall 2018 Couture during her On The Run II Tour: When I watched the Valentino Fall 2018 Couture show and I saw Adut Akech close wearing a stunning marigold silk taffeta gown which features voluminous sleeves I started to wonder who would wear it. Mr. Valentino himself stood and applauded when this gown came down the runway and it brought Tracee Ellis Ross to tears. I thought that would mean that this was going to be her Emmy’s gown, but then almost as fast as I fell in love with this gown that Beyonce snatched it up and added it into her tour wardrobe for her and Jay-Z’s On The Run II tour. It is very different than the typical looks that we see from Bey while on stage during her tour. We usually see her wearing crystal embellished bodysuits, booty shorts, and mini dresses, but this is the exact opposite of that. I love the drama and the fact that it was totally unexpected!

3) Amy Adams in Gabriela Hearst Resort 2019 leaving The View: Amy Adams has been out doing all kinds of press for her HBO mini series Sharp Objects. I haven’t watched anything of the show beyond the first episode, just haven’t been able to be in the right head space to really follow it, but I have been following Amy’s style. It has been exactly what we come to expect from her, but when she foes everything right from head to toe I really fall in love. That is exactly what happened here when she was spotted leaving The View wearing a custom Gabriela Hearst Resort 2019 floral print shirt style dress which features contrast prints in the pleats on the skirt. Her waves, oversized sunglasses, a cream Carolina Santo Domingo ‘Amphora’ bag, and Jimmy Choo ‘Hesper’ sandals all perfectly complimented this look. This is the first look that Amy has worn in a really long time that has gotten me excited.

4) Michelle Monaghan in Valentino Resort 2019 at the Mission: Impossible – Fallout Paris Premiere: I was really excited for an international promo tour from Michelle Monaghan as she promoted Mission: Impossible – Fallout, but she only stepped out for the world premiere in Paris in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. When you nail it as good as she did wearing a periwinkle blue Valentino Resort 2019 ruffled eyelet gown you don’t really need to continue a tour. This gown as totally not what I was expecting to see Michelle bring to this tour, but I feel like it totally worked. She brought this effortless ease to the glamour of the night and totally took my breath away. 5) Mandy Moore in Missoni leaving Jimmy Kimmel Live!: In the lead up to the premiere of The Darkest Minds we had seen Mandy Moore really work the circuit. She kicked off July making the front row rounds during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week and then on the promo trail just delivering major look after major look. She swapped stylists right before this all happened to start working with Cristina Ehrlich (who dresses Tina Fey, Laura Dern, Penelope Cruz, and Greta Gerwig) and the two have been making sartorial magic together. I loved pretty much everything that Mandy has worn in July, but this multicolored fringe Missoni dress which she was seen wearing leaving Jimmy Kimmel Live! was definitely the highlight. I love this fun and summery dress. Some might think that it is too formal for a talk show, but I always believe in go big or go home. I also love that Mandy paired the dress with a complimentary pair of colorful Jimmy Choo sandals.

6) Alison Brie in Vivienne Westwood at the 2018 ESPY Awards: I was shocked that I loved not one (Ciara’s Maticevski gown) but TWO looks on the red carpet at the 2018 ESPY Awards. I really would have never expected to see a custom Vivienne Westwood Couture gown on this red carpet, but that is exactly what Alison Brie delivered on this red carpet. The actress, who plays a female wrestler from the 80’s in the Netflix series GLOW, was one of the nights non-sports star presenters and I think that she really brought it with this gown. It was totally unexpected. Usually actresses wear very simple and sexy cocktail dresses from brands like David Koma or Cushnie et Ochs so this soft pink embellished gown is the opposite end of the spectrum, and it totally worked.

7) Celine Dion in Calvin Klein seen on Instagram: Celine Dion is currently on tour in Asia and she is delivering her looks on Instagram instead of daily shots of her leaving her hotels like it was last summer during her European tour. The superstar singer has expensive taste and brings major fashion moments to all aspects of her life anymore from the red carpet to the sidewalk to her Instagram account. On July 31 Celine posted a shot on Instagram of her wearing a red plaid Calvin Klein asymmetric midi dress and a pair of red Off-White C/O Jimmy Choo ‘Elisabeth’ plastic wrap effect boots. Only Celine could make me really love this look. I would say to most pick one either the dress or the boots, but Celine makes it a major fashion moment. As she so often does. 8) Sarah Paulson in Calvin Klein at San Diego Comic-Con 2018: In my final wishes for San Diego Comic-Con 2018 I said “A Comic-Con look has never made my Best Dressed of the Year list, but I never say never.” Well there were quite a few really chic moments that were seen at panels over the course of the convention, but it was Sarah Paulson who rock pink and red Calvin Klein leather for the Glass panel who could be the first to really make me consider putting a Comic-Con look on my Best Dressed of the year list. The misty rose pink leather police shirt, geranium red nylon skirt, and yellow and white suede wing-back sandals is edgy yet glam and definitely one of the most statement making looks we saw over the course of Comic-Con. Leave it to Sarah to really wow me.

9) Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in Christian Dior Couture at the RAF Centenary Ceremony: I have to say that while I have all the admiration for Meghan Markle as a woman and believe in what she stands for I don’t fawn over her style like most. With almost all of her looks, including her wedding gowns, I have had issues with fit or proportion. There was absolutely nothing I could say about how flawless this navy blue Christian Dior Couture long sleeve dress which features a watteau neckline and a knee length a-line skirt was. The dress is nothing fashion forward but the fit was perfect and it was perfectly complimented by a Stephen Jones Millinery fascinator, a matching Dior clutch, Cartier diamond earrings, and a pair of nude pumps. It isn’t a boundary pushing look, but when classic elegance is done with all the details painstakingly put together it can be very chic.

10) Princess Charlene of Monaco in Atelier Versace at the 2018 Monaco Red Cross Ball: When it comes to royals arguably Princess Charlene of Monaco is the most fashion forward (maybe only beat out by Queen Rania of Jordan.) Princess Charlene is dressed by some of the most fashion forward houses including Dior, Chanel, Akris, Armani, and of course Versace. She once again opted for an Atelier Versace look for the annual Monaco Red Cross Ball this year opting for sexy mermaid vibes with her fish scale embellished mermaid silhouette gown which features a plunging neckline made a little more modest with some beading draped across it. She knows how to carry herself in this gown for sure. She just exudes regality and not going down an overtly sexy route with presenting this gown. It just totally works, from head to toe.
